The granddaddy of Newark road racing, the annual Turkey Trot 10K and 5K were contested on Saturday. There were five award winners among the Creek Road Runners.

photo of Christina Parsonsphoto of Steve TagueIn the 10K, CRR Christina Parsons won the 50-54 age group, finishing 40th overall out of 178 runners in 48:36. Parsons margin of victory in her age group was more than seven minutes! CRR Steve Tague, who finished 24th overall, ran a solid 44:37 and took second in the 55-59 age group.

photo of April AndersonIn the 5K, the honors go to two 70-and-over seniors, who each won this ever-thinning division. CRR Doug Ridge won in 28:28, and CRR April Anderson won in 42:12 (no doubt walking much of it).

photo of Doug RepettiThe fastest time among CRRs in the 5K belonged to CRR Doug Repetti, who ran a 27:05, taking second place among the 65-69s.

A well-deserved Thanksgiving meal goes to you five.

photo of Jo Baird finishing Homecoming 5KThe photo may look like she has sprouted wings and an extra pair of legs, but it is just CRR Jo Baird’s strong and determined finishing kick, as YoUDee—the University of Delaware mascot—peers over her shoulder while she finishes the UD Homecoming 5K last Wednesday. Baird was the second overall finisher and top woman, crossing the line in 18:44.

CRR Bruce Weber trailed Baird by just seven seconds, clocking a 18:51 in third place as the top master’s runner. CRR Bill Rose finished 13th overall and took third in the 50-59 age group with a 20:32. CRR Doug Repetti took second place among the 65-69s in 25:21.

photo of Anja Leefeldtphoto of Becky GeorgeCRR Anja Leefeldt took first in the 40-49 age group in 25:29, less than three seconds off the finishing time of the woman who took the top master’s place. (Leefeldt’s chip time was actually three seconds faster than the top master’s chip time, meaning she’ll have to get closer to the starting line in the future.) CRR Becky George took third in the 50-59 age group in 26:34.

Great results for Baird, who was training for the Marine Corps Marathon, and for many of the other Creek Road Runner women at this race. CRR Christine Schultz even raced in her UD-colored Homecoming tutu!

Along with 163 other finishers, five Creek Road Runners opted for distance on the first weekend this month, competing in the annual Delaware Distance Classic 15K on October 7. Notable were…

  • photo of Bill FarquharCRR Bill Farquhar, who finished 10th overall in 57:44 (crushing the hour mark) and winning the 50-54 age group.
  • photo of Robert HeskethCRR Robert Hesketh of the South Jersey Athletic Club, who finished 33rd in 1:08:42 (7th among the 55-59s).
  • photo of Doug RepettiCRR Doug Repetti, who took 3rd in the 65-69 age group and 60th overall with a time of 1:20:10, the first time he’s taken an age-group award in this particular race.
  • photo of Theresa CannonCRR Teresa Kauffman, who finished in 1:27:54 (4th among the 55-59s).
  • photo of Julie BrewerCRR Julie Brewer, who completed the 15K distance in 1:36:10 (8th among the 55-59s).

Congratulations to each of you distance runners!

Making great strides (no pun intended) recently in lowering his 5K times, 57-year-old CRR Bruce Weber punched through the 19-minute threshold in the 10th Annual Cindy Foundation Ovarian Cancer Research 5K in Wilmington, held on September 23.

Weber’s time was 18:43, just a couple seconds over a 6-minute-per-mile pace, lopping off nearly 45 seconds in his 5K times since early summer! He placed second overall and was the first masters finisher in this lightly contested race.

photo of Andrew Weber in Lederhosen Half MarathonIn Newark’s inaugural Lederhosen Half Marathon last Saturday, 38-year-old CRR Andrew Weber blitzed the course that covered most of the city, having to follow only a motorcycle and/or cyclist marshal, in 1:22:22. The younger Weber (no relation) won the race outright among 352 finishers.

photo of Doug RepettiAlso competing in the Lederhosen Half were two other Creek Road Runners. CRR Doug Repetti, who took 3rd in the 60-69 age group in 1:54:45, finished 59th overall and was 18th among 56 masters runners. photo of Julie BrewerOn the women’s side, CRR Julie Brewer was 90th out of 226 women finishers and the 30th masters woman out of 110, clocking in at 2:19:23.

photo of Diane Kukich and Rachel StricklandTwo others, CRR Diane Kukich and CRR Rachel Strickland, got into the act as volunteer bicycle-riding course marshals.

And on this bright, beautiful fall morning, CRR Mark Deshon got to watch the race roll right by his house and cheer on the competitors.

Top of Delaware Triathlon logoOn Sunday, August 19, the annual Top of Delaware Triathlon was contested. This grueling sprint triathlon comprises a 750m swim in the scenic Newark Reservoir, a hilly 20K bike, and a combo paved-surface/trail 5K, culminating with a dreadful climb to the finish. Four Creek Road Runners met and conquered the challenge this year.

photo of Steve TagueOur crew was led by 59-year-old CRR Steve Tague, who finished 12th overall out of 158 finishers, in 1:11:35. Tague’s splits were 13:59 swim (12th), 35:21 bike (19th), and 21:02 run (18th), each very solid times. He placed second in the 55-59 age group.

Right behind Tague (taking third) in the same age group was 58-year-old CRR Mark Wise, who finished 17th overall in 1:13:58. Wise’s splits were 14:59 swim (24th), 32:53 bike (7th, wow!), and 23:35 run (55th).

photo of Doug RepettiWinning the 65-69 age group was 68-year-old Top of Delaware veteran CRR Doug Repetti, who finished 92nd overall in 1:32:34, turning in splits of 22:50, 41:16, and 26:03, respectively.

Last, but certainly not least, was first-time triathlete CRR Tom Olson. The 61-year-old Olson finished 123rd overall but was 8th among those who were completing their first triathlon, clocking in at 1:39:07. His splits were 19:19, 43:28, and 31:59, respectively.

Not too shabby for a quartet of our senior runners! Congratulation, one and all.

You’re a real runner if…

acronyms like PR and DNF are verbs.

the thought of signing up for a 401K is scary.

your blood pressure is 92 over 56 and you are conscious.

you drive 100 miles to a 5K race.

you can convert kilometers to miles in your head.

your iPod has a “running” playlist.

you check out road races while on vacation.

you’ve converted your marathon medals into a wind chime.

you consider running 3 miles to be a warm up.

you know the shoe store guy better than some relatives.

you drive down the freeway and think to yourself, “Hey, my car is doing 1-minute miles.”

you know that PR stands for something other than Puerto Rico.

you use your bib numbers to wallpaper your garage.

your resting heart rate is too low to give blood.

you look forward to birthdays when your age changes to a number ending with a 0 or 5.

you consider your latest race shirt “formal wear.”

you mentally measure junk food in miles rather than calories.

you have your own name for all the local public trails.
