For 50 years, the Turkey Trot races have been a local Thanksgiving tradition. On the Saturday before Thanksgiving thousands have toed the line over the years in a spirit of comraderie and competition. It was no different this year, on the event’s golden anniversary.

Two Creek Road Runners doubled their pleasure, running both the 10K and the 5K, and taking age-group honors in so doing.

CRR Dan Weile celebrated his first year in a new age group by winning the 50-54 division in 46:26 in the 10K and placed third in his division in the 5K with a time of 24:09. Ever ready to take on both races was CRR Doug Repetti, who took first place among his peers in each race, topping the 70+ division with a 56:02 10K and the 70-74 division with a 28:11 5K.

Repetti and CRR Bruce Hubbard and CRR April Anderson were each quoted in the Newark Post story about the event.

Hubbard and Anderson, both in their upper 70s, walked the 5K course, continuing their own tradition of participation in this local moving celebration. Hubbard placed 3rd among the 75-79s, and had there been a parallel division for women in the 5K, the 78-year-old Anderson would have won. As it was, she finished 4th in the 70+ women’s division.

It has been a profitable early season for CRR Diane Kukich, who has been targeting Delaware age-group records since she turned 70 this past February.

Having already eclipsed the 5K and 15K records in March and April, respectively, Kukich completed her trifecta within the 70-74 age group on May 14 by setting a new state record in the 10K at the St. Michael’s (Md.) Running Festival. Her time was 53:25, smashing the 2016-set mark by 55 seconds.

Kukich now holds four of the 17 state age-group records that are held by Creek Road Runners and admits that “three records in three months was intense.”

Next, she’ll be setting her sights on and training for her first marathon, which she wants to run and “just finish” on November 3.

Patriots’ Day in Boston, the third Monday in April, brings with it the famed Boston Marathon. One of our own ran this year and fared quite well.

CRR Clark Ridge (son of CRR Doug Ridge), who grew up in Newark and lives in College Park, Md., completed the 26.2-mile course—from Hopkinton, Mass., to the finish line on Boylston Street in Boston—in 2:51.37. This was a PR for Ridge at this distance by an astonishing 10 minutes. An interesting thing about a big marathon like Boston with seeded starting is that in order to run a big personal best one has to pass a lot of other runners. In Ridge’s case he had to pass more than 4,500 runners along the way and finished 1,602nd overall out of tens of thousands.

Whenever Ridge is home visiting his parents, he heads to Creek Road for a nostalgic training run.

Congratulations, Clark!

Locally, the Delaware Running Festival was held on April 24 in Wilmington. There were a few standouts among the Creek Road Runners in the Half Marathon and 10K races.

In the Delaware Half Marathon, 40-yr-old CRR Andrew Weber finished 2nd overall and top master’s runner in a blistering 1:22:15. Weber always seems to do very well at this distance. He has won this race in the past.

Of particular mention is CRR Martha Narvaez. While she marked a major personal achievement by finishing this race (placing 11th in the 45-49 age group in 2:03:49), her 12-yr.-old son, Lincoln, won the 19-and-under division outright, completing the race in 1:35:50 and finishing in the top 30 overall. That’s 7:19/mile pace for 13.1 miles for a 12-year-old, and it was his first half marathon! Watch out for this young runner over in the next several years and when he gets to compete in high school.

In the 10K, 61-yr.-old CRR Bruce Weber (no relation to the aforementioned Weber) placed 3rd overall and was the top master’s runner in an impressive 41:26. Dover’s CRR Holly Scott was the 11th overal female finisher and placed 2nd among the 60-64 women in 58:22.

Congrats to all.

There were a couple recent popular racing events, at which a few Creek Road Runners excelled.

At the hugely attended Nov. 25 Thanksgiving Run for MS in Wilmington, there were two standouts from among our cohort. In the 5K, CRR Bruce Weber continued his dominance in the 60-64 age group with a win in 19:31, placing 17th overall out of 455 entrants.

photo of Doug Repetti

Not to be outdone by all the younger, faster guys, CRR Doug Repetti repeated again by running both the 10K and the 5K on Thanksgiving morning. Repetti took first among the 70-and-overs in the 10K in 54:12. He took second in that same age group in the 5K, finishing in 26:59—a lot of running for one morning, no matter how you look at it.

Special mention goes to 12-year-old Lincoln Narvaez, son of CRR Martha Narvaez, who not only won his 13-and-under age group but placed 25th overall out of 318 competitors in the 10K with a 44:59. Super time for this up-and-coming runner; good coaching, mom.

In Newark’s annual Reindeer Run & Romp 5K, held on Dec. 3, CRR Luke Nigro finished 7th overall out of the 902 after-dark runners and won the 25-29 age group in a stellar 17:39. Well done, Luke.

In the second longest historical race in Delaware, four Creek Road Runners collected age group awards in Newark on Saturday, November 20, either in the 10K or the 5K…

photo of Doug Repetti

…or both in CRR Doug Repetti’s case! He did what we’ll call “the Repetti” by winning his age group in each of the two races. In the earlier 10K, he ran a 56:08, taking first in the over-70 division and finishing 54th out of 99 competitors. Then he ran the 5K in 27:19, winning the 70-74 age group.

photo of Bill Farquhar

While not winning his age group, the fastest Creek Road Runner on the day was CRR Bill Farquhar, who did manage to take a 2nd among the 50-54s, finishing 17th overall out of 409 5K finishers in a very solid 20:38. Farquhar doesn’t compete in many Newark races, so it was good to see him out there representing our crew.

CRR Diane Kukich won her 65-69 age group in the 5K with a time of 25:49. Despite winning her age group, Kukich merely took 3rd among her own family, as son Alex and daughter Christine, visiting from Baltimore, finished ahead of her. Then again, she’s several years their senior!

77-year-old running veteran CRR Doug Ridge also took home some 5K hardware, winning the 75-79 age group in 29:50.

Congratulations to all.

Note: Times mentioned were chip times (gun times unavailable).
