Adding yet another completed summer triathlon to his bag, CRR Steve Tague competed in the USA Olympic Distance Triathlon Nationals in Milwaukee on Sunday, August 9.

Having competed in the nationals at least once before, the 66-year-old Tague simply wanted to “tri” it again, while he felt he still could. Well, he definitely showed well, finishing in the top third (taking 18th place out of the 58 male registrants) in his five-year age group.

Tague swam the 1.5K length in 25:15, an impressive 5th among his age-group peers; biked the 40K course in 1:13:29 (a 20.4 mph average), 17th best in his age group; and ran the 10K in 57:39, 34th among his peer group. Adding transition times of 2:52 and 2:10, respectively, his total time for the event was 2:41:22.

Always a serious competitor, Tague admitted his showing in the 10K hurt his overall placement. He commented, “I did okay. Great swim, average bike, and poor run. No excuses…was healthy, good conditions, just not enough training to be [as] competitive [as he wanted]. Still glad I went, as it was mostly fun until mile 3 of the run.”

We think “I did okay” is simply an understatement! Congratulations on yet a third olympic-distance triathlon in less than three months.

OK, so headlines can be deceiving.

Even so, on August 6th Newark’s CRR Steve Tague placed 15th among his 158 age-group (60-64) competitors in the Olympic-distance triathlon at the U.S. Triathlon Nationals in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. That’s top ten percent!

The second of four Delaware finishers, Tague completed the .75K-swim, 40K-bike, 10K-run event in 2:23:43, placing 460th out of 2,737 overall and 360th among 1,521 men.

Tague’s swim time was 23:57, his bike time was 1:06:53, and his run time was 49:04. Transitions in between each were 2:28 and 1:21, respectively.

Having improved three positions from his 18th place in his previous attempt at nationals, he is confident that he can do better next year.

Congratulations!

You’re a real runner if…

acronyms like PR and DNF are verbs.

the thought of signing up for a 401K is scary.

your blood pressure is 92 over 56 and you are conscious.

you drive 100 miles to a 5K race.

you can convert kilometers to miles in your head.

your iPod has a “running” playlist.

you check out road races while on vacation.

you’ve converted your marathon medals into a wind chime.

you consider running 3 miles to be a warm up.

you know the shoe store guy better than some relatives.

you drive down the freeway and think to yourself, “Hey, my car is doing 1-minute miles.”

you know that PR stands for something other than Puerto Rico.

you use your bib numbers to wallpaper your garage.

your resting heart rate is too low to give blood.

you look forward to birthdays when your age changes to a number ending with a 0 or 5.

you consider your latest race shirt “formal wear.”

you mentally measure junk food in miles rather than calories.

you have your own name for all the local public trails.
