This triathlon was an Olympic-distance event, comprising a 1.5K swim, 40K bike, and 10K run. Ward finished 9th out of 14 competitors in the men’s 45-49 age group and was 42nd out of the 96 men who finished. Having been beaten by five women, he placed 47th overall out of the field of 128.

Following a bay swim, the bike leg was hilly, winding through much of the Elk Neck State Forest.

Here’s how Ward described his 10K. “Run was… semi-hilly, but my quad discomfort from the bike slowly melted away into my hamstrings. Water stations every mile and a few energy gels propelled me to the finish line while my family cheered me on.”

Ward’s split times were as follows:
Swim—41:15; Transition 1—3:48; Bike—1:18:10; Transition 2—2:44; Run—51:53

“Feeling good this morning and eyeing up another triathlon… possibly later this fall,” Ward concluded. “Overall, it was a great experience, and I highly recommend Kinetic [the event organizer] for anyone interested in a first-time triathlon.”

Well done!
