Age-grading for us seniors is the big playing-field leveler and often reveals some important clues as to how well some Creek Road Runners are still racing.

On the Saturday before Christmas, at the local White Claw-mas 8K (close metric equivalent to a 5-mile run), there were two standouts among our contingent.

photo of Bruce WeberCRR Bruce Weber and CRR Diane Kukich placed first and second overall (out of 609 runners), respectively, in terms of age grading (scoring based on one’s time relative to the world record at that distance for one’s age). Weber scored an 82.5, and Kukich was close behind with 82.3. That, folks, is what is considered “National Class” (anything in the 80s). The two have been racing consistently with results like this for several years. There was only one other racer at this event who had an age-grading score in this range.

In terms of time, the 58-year-old Weber, a track runner at heart, placed 7th overall and won his 10-year age group in 31:05. The 67-year-old Kukich placed 123rd and took second among her respective age-group peers in 41:10.

Bravo!

Couch to 5K, kukich, University of Delaware

CRR Diane Kukich, a certified running coach through the Road Runners Club of America, will again be getting UD employees “up and running” this spring through a Couch to 5K running program, a nine-week training program for beginner runners, offered by the University of Delaware Employee Health and Wellbeing.

Darkness had complete sway in this local 5K, which benefits Special Olympics of Delaware. However, there were three bright spots among our contingent in the race this year, which took place on Friday, Nov. 30.

photo of Kyle Chappellphoto of Keith CrispinCRR Kyle Chappell turned in the best time among three Creek Road Runners who placed in their respective age groups. He came in 37th overall and third in the 55-59 age group in 20:32. CRR Keith Crispin placed third among the 50-54s, finishing 70th overall, in 22:08.

CRR Diane Kukich, who is coming off some minor foot injuries, won the 65-69 age group in a very respectable 25:11.

The Annual Scott Mackler 5K was contested on October 21. This race continues in memory of CRR Scott Mackler who had battled ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) for years before his death and added significantly to the quest to find a cure, not only through his own research, but through the proceeds from this race—the toughest road 5K in Delaware.

Molly Shay, 12-year-old daughter of CRR Mike Shay, came away as the female winner on the day, placing 25th overall out of 157 finishers while posting a time of 25:27. The younger Shay has been coached (seemingly quite successfully) by CRR Diane Kukich.

germanIn the men’s field, CRR Ryan German won the 40-49 age group, placing 10th overall in 22:38.

Congratulations to both of you.

Nearly 700 participants showed up on October 6 for the annual Main Street Mile, contested here in Newark on the straightaway between the east end of East Main and the Deer Park Tavern. There were three Creek Road Runners among the standouts in the race.

First of all, CRR Andrew Weber and CRR Bruce Weber (no relation, other than similar top-end speed) both cracked the top ten. “Weber A” finished 7th in 5:13.8 (5:12.9 chip), taking 2nd in the 30-39 age group, and “Weber B” finished 10th in 5:18.4 (5:16.9 chip) while winning the 50-59s and notching the highest age-grade score of any of the competitors at 85.1*.

The second highest age-grade score was turned in by CRR Diane Kukich at 83.1*, by virtue of her 7:41.0 finishing time (7:31.2 chip). Kukich won the 65-69 age group.

*A score between 80 and 89 is considered “national” class.

You’re a real runner if…

acronyms like PR and DNF are verbs.

the thought of signing up for a 401K is scary.

your blood pressure is 92 over 56 and you are conscious.

you drive 100 miles to a 5K race.

you can convert kilometers to miles in your head.

your iPod has a “running” playlist.

you check out road races while on vacation.

you’ve converted your marathon medals into a wind chime.

you consider running 3 miles to be a warm up.

you know the shoe store guy better than some relatives.

you drive down the freeway and think to yourself, “Hey, my car is doing 1-minute miles.”

you know that PR stands for something other than Puerto Rico.

you use your bib numbers to wallpaper your garage.

your resting heart rate is too low to give blood.

you look forward to birthdays when your age changes to a number ending with a 0 or 5.

you consider your latest race shirt “formal wear.”

you mentally measure junk food in miles rather than calories.

you have your own name for all the local public trails.
