Recently, the University of Delaware held its annual Homecoming 5K, though the competition itself was an individual thing due to the coronavirus pandemic and its associated local restrictions on large gatherings.

Two Creek Road Runners continue to put together good 5K efforts. Placing second and third overall, respectively, were CRR Bruce Weber and CRR Bill Rose. Though socially distant, their times were separated by only a minute, Weber notching a 19:53 and Rose coming in at 20:53.

Out of the 109 runners, two other CRRs ran as well. CRR Diane Kukich posted a 26:42, finishing 15th overall and 4th among the women. CRR Julie Brewer was 26th overall with a 28:50.

Luke Nigro pressures eventual winner Andrew Weber in the final mile of the 5K.

photo of Andrew WeberThe 2019 edition of the UD Homecoming 5K was a real success for the few Creek Road Runners who ran the race. Out of our 12 participants (all male), five garnered top awards and one a third-place age-group finish.

photo of Luke NigroThe battle at the front was between CRR Andrew Weber and CRR Luke Nigro. Weber ended up besting the younger Nigro and winning the race in a time of 17:39. Nigro came in second overall and first in the 19-29 age group in 17:45.

Among the age group winners were CRR Bruce Weber (50-59), who placed fifth overall in 19:15, CRR Bill Rose (60-69), placing 17th overall in 21:05, and 73-year-old CRR Doug Ridge (70+), who ran a respectable 28:29.

CRR Steve Tague finished third in the 60-69 age group in 22:36. A couple seconds behind (but nearly catching) Tague was CRR Mark Deshon, who ran unofficially over the combination paved, cross-country-like surface of the 5K course at the University of Delaware’s athletics complex and agricultural campus.

A shout-out to CRR Nick Sisofo, who made a rare race appearance.

It started in 1999, right after the late CRR Scott Mackler was diagnosed with ALS. It’s probably the toughest road 5K in Delaware. Runners are rewarded, though, with a full buffet after the run. Awards for top finishers—both runners and walkers.

photo of Jo Baird finishing Homecoming 5KThe photo may look like she has sprouted wings and an extra pair of legs, but it is just CRR Jo Baird’s strong and determined finishing kick, as YoUDee—the University of Delaware mascot—peers over her shoulder while she finishes the UD Homecoming 5K last Wednesday. Baird was the second overall finisher and top woman, crossing the line in 18:44.

CRR Bruce Weber trailed Baird by just seven seconds, clocking a 18:51 in third place as the top master’s runner. CRR Bill Rose finished 13th overall and took third in the 50-59 age group with a 20:32. CRR Doug Repetti took second place among the 65-69s in 25:21.

photo of Anja Leefeldtphoto of Becky GeorgeCRR Anja Leefeldt took first in the 40-49 age group in 25:29, less than three seconds off the finishing time of the woman who took the top master’s place. (Leefeldt’s chip time was actually three seconds faster than the top master’s chip time, meaning she’ll have to get closer to the starting line in the future.) CRR Becky George took third in the 50-59 age group in 26:34.

Great results for Baird, who was training for the Marine Corps Marathon, and for many of the other Creek Road Runner women at this race. CRR Christine Schultz even raced in her UD-colored Homecoming tutu!

Successful homecoming

you know that PR stands for something other than Puerto Rico.

you use your bib numbers to wallpaper your garage.

your resting heart rate is too low to give blood.

you look forward to birthdays when your age changes to a number ending with a 0 or 5.
