This year’s Broad Street Run—the popular net-downhill, ten-mile, straight-down-Broad-Street run in the heart of Philadelphia—drew more than 20,000 participants. Among the masses at this May 1 run were two Creek Road Runners from Newark—CRR Flora Poindexter, who ran a 1:49:34 (1:47:07 chip), and CRR Shawn Alexander, who ran 1:56:48.

Congratulations to both of you for competing in this unique race.

On Wednesday, Oct. 20, the University of Delaware held its annual Blue Hens Homecoming 5K. Several Creek Road Runners took advantage of this local race, which is a parking-lot-and-dirt-path course on the Ag & Athletics campus.

Winning the race was 41-year-old CRR Andrew Weber, the younger of our fast-Webers duo, in 17:37. He had competition from another runner in his age group but won by a comfortable 15 seconds. Coming in third overall and taking first in the 20-29 age group was CRR Luke Nigro with a time of 18:14. Placing 12th overall and winning the 60-69 age group was 60-year-old CRR Bruce Weber. The elder Weber’s finishing time of 19:45 gave him an age-grade score of 80.3, which is considered “national class.” Congratulations to these three standouts.

Creek Road Runners took all three places in the men’s 60-69s. Placing second in that age group was CRR Bill Rose, who finished 18th overall in 21:03. Triathlete CRR Steve Tague placed 3rd among his age-group peers and 29th overall in 22:06.

Our lone female competitor was CRR Flora Poindexter, who finished second among the 60-69s (strong age group!) in 34:22.

Other Creek Road Runners finishers included CRR Dave Schultz (24:19), CRR Joe Dombroski (28:43), and CRR Shawn Alexander (29:06).

photo of Flora PoindexterCRR Flora Poindexter has received one of the University of Delaware’s highest honors, the Excellence in Teaching Award. Poindexter, a senior instructor in languages, literatures and cultures, is one of only four to receive this award at UD in 2019.

Of her craft, Poindexter says, “Teaching is a true passion for me. I enjoy watching my students discover the French language and francophone culture. I try to make my classes as enriching as possible and I am constantly looking for new ways of teaching to different interests and learning styles. As an educator, my own learning is a crucial part of my practice.”

In addition to being a great French teacher, Poindexter likes to run longer distances, including half and full marathons.

photo of Roberta GolinkoffCRR Roberta Golinkoff, one of the earliest members of Creek Road Runners, was also honored by the University of Delaware with the inaugural Faculty Excellence in Scholarly Community Engagement Award. Golinkoff, the Unidel H. Rodney Sharp Chair in the School of Education, was one of two individuals to be so honored.

A pioneer in research in young children’s learning, Golinkoff says, “It is amazingly gratifying to be recognized for my attempts to improve the lives of children and families around the world! The University has been a tremendous support for my efforts.”

Creek Road Runners congratulates both of them on their achievements!

Two CRRs recently completed half marathons in major city races, and by their respective finishing times, one wonders if they should become training partners.

photo of Flora PoindexterOn October 14, CRR Flora Poindexter ran the Staten Island Half Marathon, crossing the finish line in 2:23:30. She plans to do the Philadelphia Marathon soon. Just a week later, on October 20, CRR Rachel Strickland ran the Baltimore Running Festival Half Marathon, finishing in 2:22:13.

Congratulations, you two!

On Monday, several Creek Road Runners gathered for a fun 5K down Creek Road in honor of CRR Paul Pusecker, whose time at the University of Delaware is ending this week. Several also gathered afterward for a lunch with him at the Deer Park Tavern.

Before coming to UD, Pusecker retired from the U.S. Army as a lieutenant colonel after more than 20 years of active duty service.

Pusecker has been a “regular” runner out on Creek Road for the 17 years he’s been on campus, along with small group of UD running companions who had popularized the “Lower Slower” and “Chateau Country” runs that were annual staples back in the day. More recently, he’s taken up bicycling to augment his fitness regimen. He will be missed out on Creek Road.

your blood pressure is 92 over 56 and you are conscious.

you drive 100 miles to a 5K race.

you can convert kilometers to miles in your head.

your iPod has a “running” playlist.

you check out road races while on vacation.

you’ve converted your marathon medals into a wind chime.

you consider running 3 miles to be a warm up.

you know the shoe store guy better than some relatives.

you drive down the freeway and think to yourself, “Hey, my car is doing 1-minute miles.”

you know that PR stands for something other than Puerto Rico.

you use your bib numbers to wallpaper your garage.

your resting heart rate is too low to give blood.

you look forward to birthdays when your age changes to a number ending with a 0 or 5.

you consider your latest race shirt “formal wear.”

you mentally measure junk food in miles rather than calories.

you have your own name for all the local public trails.
