Leave it to the older guys to take home the accolades in this, the longest-running 10K/5K event in Delaware—Newark’s Annual Turkey Trot. Four Creek Road Runners took home hardware on the day.

photo of Doug RepettiCRR Doug Repetti ran both the 10K and the 5K, winning the 60-64 division of the 10K in 47:33 and taking an age-group second in the 5K in 23:44—a very impressive endurance showing. Repetti placed 40th overall out of 247 finishers in the 10K.

photo of Mark DeshonIn the 5K, CRR Mark Deshon posted the fastest time of the day among the Creek Road Runners while winning the 55-59 age group in 20:50. This was a strong time for Deshon, who weathered having a shoelace come untied at the mile-and-a-half point and being dusted in the final straightaway by age-group compatriot Epi Camacho. (Deshon later found out that Camacho had won their age group in the 10K in a blazing 41:20 and was running the 5K as a cool down, more or less.) Deshon placed 16th overall out of 529 finishers.

ridgeThe most senior of the CRR senior citizen age-group winners on the day was CRR Doug Ridge, who posted a respectable 24:31 among the 70-and-overs in the 5K, despite coming off a stomach flu and wrestling chronic hamstring soreness. Not bad at all for an old man.

Rounding out the honorees is the irrepressible CRR Bruce Hubbard, who took second among the 65-69 men in the 10K, finishing in 1:01:11.

Despite below-freezing temperatures, 24 hearty souls and one ready-for-a-long-run canine came out to participate in the 16th annual “Wring Out the Old, Ring in the New” trail run at the Fair Hill Natural Resource Management Area’s Black Bridge Road parking lot on the last day of 2014.

This year was highlighted by, count ’em, 11 women—coming out in force to share this unique New Year’s Eve day experience for themselves—and a special appearance by self-appointed CEO CRR Matt Robinson. Special thanks to photographer Doug Baker, husband of CRR Diane Kukich, for taking so many good photos (sorry we only had room for a few).

photo of Steve TagueTop of Delaware Triathlon logoAfter several years effectively out of competition due to medical issues (including one serious bike accident), CRR Steve Tague is unequivocally back! Yesterday, he led the way for the other eight Creek Road Runners at the Top of Delaware Sprint Triathlon, placing 14th overall out of 271 finishers. He won the men’s 55-59 age group in 1:04:54, placing 17th in the quarter-mile swim, 12th in the 11.4-mile bike (averaging just over 20 mph on the hilly course!), and 32nd in the 2.6-mile run at the Newark Reservoir and Mayor Redd Park trails, which includes a final 30-yard incline straight up the side of the reservoir hill (that’s serious theater).

CRR Rich Braun was the second of the fold to finish, placing 63rd overall in 1:15:41 on the basis of a strong bike leg (17th).

Three other Creek Road Runners took age-group awards on the day—CRR Dan Simmons, coming off an injury to win the 65-69s in 1:16:12, placing 65th; CRR Theresa Kauffman, who took second among the 50-54s in 1:19:46, placing 90th; and CRR Sue Barton, who took second in the 55-59s, rounding out the top 100 finishers in 1:20:38.

Other Creek Road Runners who finished were CRR Ryan German (1:21:38), CRR Jen Pyle (1:25:12), CRR Mary Braun (1:31:58), and CRR Bruce Hubbard (1:39:00), who deserves a big shout out for being the only one of the nine to have indicated “Creek Road Runners” as his registered team. Take a hint, everyone.

You’re a real runner if…

acronyms like PR and DNF are verbs.

the thought of signing up for a 401K is scary.

your blood pressure is 92 over 56 and you are conscious.

you drive 100 miles to a 5K race.

you can convert kilometers to miles in your head.

your iPod has a “running” playlist.

you check out road races while on vacation.

you’ve converted your marathon medals into a wind chime.

you consider running 3 miles to be a warm up.

you know the shoe store guy better than some relatives.

you drive down the freeway and think to yourself, “Hey, my car is doing 1-minute miles.”

you know that PR stands for something other than Puerto Rico.

you use your bib numbers to wallpaper your garage.

your resting heart rate is too low to give blood.

you look forward to birthdays when your age changes to a number ending with a 0 or 5.

you consider your latest race shirt “formal wear.”

you mentally measure junk food in miles rather than calories.

you have your own name for all the local public trails.
