At two recent races, one regional and one local, Creek Road Runners shone nearly as bright as the dimming late-autumn sun.

photo of Jay CoughenourCRR Jay Coughenour ran the Philadelphia Half Marathon in a splendid time of 1:18:53. His chip time of 1:18:34 put him just a fraction of a second under a six-minute-per-mile pace for the 13.1-mile distance. Coughenour was the second finisher in the 45-49 age group and placed 85th the among men and 91st overall. Excellent at age 49!

photo of Keith CrispinIn the Reindeeer Run & Romp 5K, held here in Newark on Friday night, CRR Keith Crispin placed 10th overall out of 406 finishers, winning the 45-49 age group in 18:52. CRR Dan Simmons, just coming off an injury, won the 65-69 age group in 23:53, and CRR Diane Kukich won her age group (60-64) in 24:11. Other age-group awardees included CRR Bill Rose, who took second place among the 55-59s in a very respectable 19:58, and CRR Sue Barton, who placed third among the 55-59s in 28:06.

In non-running-related news, rumor has it that CRR Charlie Riordan lit up the court at The Bob recently with a halftime free-throw-shooting exhibition. Now we know where he’s been training. We know “Charlie Runs on Dunkin’”; the question is Can he dunk on Dunkin’?

age grading, coughenour, Run the Bridge 10K

photo of Jay CoughenourCRR Jay Coughenour placed 3rd among the 45-49 men in the Cooper Norcross Run the Bridge 10K. The race on the Ben Franklin Bridge in Philadelphia is a big area race and draws competitive runners from near and far. Coughenour finished 21st overall out of 1,120 runners in a blazing fast 36:29. Not only is that less than six minutes per mile, but his time age grades at an 83.5, well into what is considered “national class.”

Well done!

2014 Boston Marathon logoPatriots’ Day in Boston brought out the best in some 36,000 runners and many more spectators, as the 119th Boston Marathon went off without incident yesterday.

photo of Keith Crispinphoto of Jay CoughenourAmong the runners were CRR Jay Coughenour, who finished 1,841st overall and 117th in the 45-49 age group with a 3:00:42, and CRR Keith Crispin, who finished in 3:11:29, good for 4,315th overall. The weather was a bit warmer than desirable, and most everyone paid the price. From start to finish, Coughenour felt that he was participating in something far more than just another road race. This is what he had to say about his experience in the Boston Marathon:

“The highlight was the AMAZING crowds! I’d never experienced anything like the size of these crowds, which really stretched [along] the entire route. [In] every town we passed, [there] seemed to be at least 12 people deep on the road sides cheering everyone forward. I don’t know where they got the energy to keep clapping and cheering the runners, but I really appreciated it, especially later in the race when my legs and mind were pretty beat-up.

“For me, my slowest 5K occurred on the downhills into Boston at the end of the race. That is OK, though, as it gave me more time to savor the moment. I’m not sure my body and temperament is well suited for marathoning, but I’m very happy to have crossed Boston off my bucket-list! Amazing experience, and the best part was reuniting with my family at the finish!”

Coughenour’s chip time was 2:57:24, which also made him happy, because he had met his sub-3-hour time goal.

On behalf of all Creek Road Runners, congratulations to each of you for this accomplishment and for celebrating the spirit of the Boston Marathon.

Three Creek Road Runners distinguished themselves in the 51st running of the Caesar Rodney Half-Marathon on Sunday, March 23.

photo of Holly ScottLeading the way with a win in the 50-54 age group was Dover’s CRR Holly Scott. She completed the course in 1:43:45 and finishing 292nd overall out of nearly 1,200 finishers. Very impressive.

photo of Dan SimmonsNewark’s CRR Dan Simmons claimed 2nd in the 65-69 age group with a solid 1:39:17, finishing 206th overall.

photo of Keith CrispinBlazing through the course and finishing 47th overall, Bear’s CRR Keith Crispin ran a 1:25:26 to take 4th place among a very competitive 45-49 age group.

Other notables: CRR Jay Coughenour ran a 1:31:24*, which is a good time for most, but he was obviously not running at his full potential. CRR Ryan German ran with Simmons most of the way but pulled ahead to finish in 1:38:10*.
