The 11-day-long cloud cover finally broke this morning, as several Creek Road Runners took place in either the Delaware Marathon, Delaware Half-Marathon, or 4-Person Relay at Tubman-Garrett Park in Wilmington.

photo of Andrew Weberphoto of Barret MichalecIn the 26.2-mile race, CRR Andrew Weber finished 2nd in the 35-39 age group and 15th overall (out of 345 finishers), covering the marathon distance in a stellar 3:02:47 (under 7 minutes/mile)! Weber was the third Delaware resident to finish. CRR Barret Michalec finished 10th among the 35-39s and 46th overall in 3:27:19.

photo of Dan Weilephoto of Tripp ShentonIn the half-marathon, CRR Dan Weile took 3rd in the 40-44 age group and finished 41st overall (out of 892 finishers) in a fast 1:35:04. CRR Tripp Shenton finished 2nd among his peers in the 55-59 age group and 83rd overall in 1:43:25.

The Creek Road Runners team won the Senior Team division and placed 5th overall (out of 99 teams) in the 4-person relay (four 6.55-mile legs), covering the 26.2-mile distance in 2:53:49. CRR Keith Crispin got the team off to a good start in 42:33; CRR Mark Deshon, the most senior member of the group, turned in a respectable 46:47; CRR Bill Rose ran a 43:17—pretty close to a team-average time; and CRR Bill Farquhar blasted a fast 41:09 anchor leg. The team missed out on a fourth-place overall finish by a mere 16 seconds.

The average age of the four runners was 53, brought down quite a bit by the relative youngsters Crispin and Farquhar.

kukich2On Saturday in the Delaware Marathon Running Festival 5K, CRR Diane Kukich won the 60-69 age group, coming in 15th overall (out of 115 finishers) in 23:55. This was Kukich’s best 5K time in five years.

Creek Road, deshon, photos, rose, White Clay Creek, winter

photo of Mark Deshon and Bill RoseTwo Creek Road Runners had separate winter adventures with a camera recently.

CRR Mark Deshon picked an extremely cold weekend to run in the Adirondacks this past Saturday, while CRR Bill Rose stayed close to home and captured some nice wintry shots of White Clay Creek from scenic venues along Creek Road on a relatively balmy (ha, ha) Monday. Mark’s photos include a shot of the outdoor thermometer at -17°F as he started out (the wind chill was quite a bit lower) and a close-up showing his frozen eyebrows post-run. Click on photos below for a larger view.

Leave it to the older guys to take home the accolades in this, the longest-running 10K/5K event in Delaware—Newark’s Annual Turkey Trot. Four Creek Road Runners took home hardware on the day.

photo of Doug RepettiCRR Doug Repetti ran both the 10K and the 5K, winning the 60-64 division of the 10K in 47:33 and taking an age-group second in the 5K in 23:44—a very impressive endurance showing. Repetti placed 40th overall out of 247 finishers in the 10K.

photo of Mark DeshonIn the 5K, CRR Mark Deshon posted the fastest time of the day among the Creek Road Runners while winning the 55-59 age group in 20:50. This was a strong time for Deshon, who weathered having a shoelace come untied at the mile-and-a-half point and being dusted in the final straightaway by age-group compatriot Epi Camacho. (Deshon later found out that Camacho had won their age group in the 10K in a blazing 41:20 and was running the 5K as a cool down, more or less.) Deshon placed 16th overall out of 529 finishers.

ridgeThe most senior of the CRR senior citizen age-group winners on the day was CRR Doug Ridge, who posted a respectable 24:31 among the 70-and-overs in the 5K, despite coming off a stomach flu and wrestling chronic hamstring soreness. Not bad at all for an old man.

Rounding out the honorees is the irrepressible CRR Bruce Hubbard, who took second among the 65-69 men in the 10K, finishing in 1:01:11.

photo of Tri-State MarkerSaturday was National Trails Day and a rather special day in this area. Hikers came from three states (Md., Pa., and Del.) to officially open a new trail in nearby White Clay Creek Preserve in Pennsylvania and to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the original placement of a wooden post (at the location of the stone that is called the “Tri-State Marker”) by surveyors Mason and Dixon in 1765 at the behest of William Penn to mark the northeastern corner of Maryland and its northern and (then) eastern border with Pennsylvania.

photo of Bob Bennett, Steve Cottrell, and Mark DeshonIt also became an impromptu runners reunion for CRR Bob Bennett (left) and CRR Mark Deshon (right), who had hiked together, and old friend and racing nemesis CRR Steve Cottrell (center), whom they met at the ceremony for the Tri-State Marker.

Cottrell, who was there with his border collie, says he no longer races but does still run. He looked to be in good shape. Deshon had not seen him for nearly 25 years, and for Bennett it may have been longer.

Steve also asked if CRR Bob Taggart was still around and said, “Ask him about our trip back from [the] Boston [Marathon back in the late 80s].” Apparently it was quite an adventure, one which also included CRR Martin Wolfer.

photo of Bob Bennett at the Arc Corner MonumentOn the way back, Bennett and Deshon stopped off for a photo at the Arc Corner Monument in White Clay Creek State Park, just about a kilometer due east of the Tri-State Marker, where the westernmost point of the unique radial-line border of Delaware and Pennsylvania begins.

During the 80s, the two had spent many a run in White Clay Creek State Park dashing down the steep hill that finds this stone at its base.

All in all, it was a great day to celebrate longtime friendships.

It was a picture-perfect day for a race on Creek Road, and the Creek Road Runners did not disappoint, taking home three 1st place, three 2nd place, and one 3rd place among the age-group awards handed out on Sunday morning at the Blue Hen 5K.

photo of Bill RoseLeading the way and crossing the line 4th overall out of 256 finishers was CRR Bill Rose. Rose weaved his way through many a runner over the course to finish where he did, having run an even 20:00. Creek Road Runners owned the 50-59 age group; Rose won and was joined by 2nd place finisher CRR Mark Deshon (21:08) and 3rd place finisher CRR Cole Galloway (21:12), whose son, Nathan, came in second overall with a tidy 18:23.

Passing several runners along the way, CRR Dan Weile turned in a good performance and earned a 2nd place among the 40-49s in 20:55. Deshon just couldn’t stay in contact with him for the second half of the race.

kukich2photo of Julie BrewerDespite her admission that the hill at the end “beat [her] up,” CRR Diane Kukich won the 60-69 age group in a time of 25:03. Not to be outdone by her own peers, CRR Julie Brewer was the other female age-group (50-59) winner on the day in 27:33.

CRR John Bishop also deserves a nod for his 2nd place finish among the 70-and-overs in 43:11, even though he’d probably be the first to admit that there were very few in that age group.

You’re a real runner if…

acronyms like PR and DNF are verbs.

the thought of signing up for a 401K is scary.

your blood pressure is 92 over 56 and you are conscious.

you drive 100 miles to a 5K race.

you can convert kilometers to miles in your head.

your iPod has a “running” playlist.

you check out road races while on vacation.

you’ve converted your marathon medals into a wind chime.

you consider running 3 miles to be a warm up.

you know the shoe store guy better than some relatives.

you drive down the freeway and think to yourself, “Hey, my car is doing 1-minute miles.”

you know that PR stands for something other than Puerto Rico.

you use your bib numbers to wallpaper your garage.

your resting heart rate is too low to give blood.

you look forward to birthdays when your age changes to a number ending with a 0 or 5.

you consider your latest race shirt “formal wear.”

you mentally measure junk food in miles rather than calories.

you have your own name for all the local public trails.
