photo of Matt RobinsonCRR Matt Robinson, self-appointed CEO of the Creek Road Runners was quoted in a University of Delaware article about the state’s Second Youth Concussion Summit. On Nov. 20, close to 50 representatives from the state’s medical community, advocacy groups, the Delaware Athletic Trainers’ Association, school nurses, state politicians, and educators convened at the University of Delaware to discuss the issue. Robinson said, “While it appears protocols are in place at the higher levels of sport participation in the state, there is still a need to promote best practices in the youth sport environment. I hope today’s program is a first step in ensuring that all athletes at every level will be impacted by the best practices being implemented.” CRR Diane Kukich wrote the story. Read the article

photo of CRR Ice Bucket ChallengeOn Friday, CRR Steve Goodwin put out a call for a few Creek Road Runners to participate with him in the Ice Bucket Challenge, an individual charity event to support ALS research that has become viral. Each person challenges another person to do the same and/or donate to ALS.

Four others—CRR Becky George, CRR Anja Leefeldt, CRR Mark Deshon, and CRR George Hadjipanayis—answered the call and took the challenge with him on Friday, August 15, at Carpenter Sports Building after a nice run of somewhere in the neighborhood of 4.5 miles, which included the Pomeroy and Hall Trails. See video on Facebook.

This was done in memory of CRR Scott Mackler, who died of ALS. See post. Don’t feel like dumping ice water on your head but want to help those who are struggling with this disease? See info about ALS Philadelphia Chapter Scott Mackler Assistive Technology.

Though there was no smoke on the water or fire in the sky, one of our own fought through the pain in Switzerland this past weekend. Despite pulling a hamstring, CRR Paul Amer limped the final 6 km to the finish line in the Geneva Half Marathon. Running for the Aseat Toulouse (that’s French for “Creek Road Runners”) team, Amer finished in 2:19:14.

Asked for comment after the race, Amer noted, “I am quite happy in setting the all-time Geneva Half Marathon record for 60-year-old computer science professors from the University of Delaware.”

Congratulations to one of a kind!

photo of Dan SimmonsIn other weekend news, CRR Dan Simmons placed 4th among the 65-69s in the Broad Street Run in Philadelphia yesterday, coming in with a very respectable 1:14:06. Simmons finished 2041st overall out of nearly 40,000 runners.  Well done.

Locally, in the Race Against Domestic Violence 5K, CRR Diane Kukich pulled out her lucky pink shoes and won the 60-64 age group in 24:01.

photo of Henry GlydeUniversity of Delaware’s Unidel Professor of Physics and Astronomy and longtime CRR Henry Glyde was recently named a fellow of the Neutron Scattering Society of America for his research, which focuses on neutron scattering, low-temperature physics, and quantum fluids and solids. See story.

A native of Canada, Glyde has been running in this area for more than three decades. CRR Mark Deshon recalls meeting Glyde in the early 1980s. “He would run intervals with CRR Bob Bennett and me on the Newark High track, and neither of us could keep up with him for the entire workout. His last name accurately describes how easily he ran on the track.”

You’re a real runner if…

acronyms like PR and DNF are verbs.

the thought of signing up for a 401K is scary.

your blood pressure is 92 over 56 and you are conscious.

you drive 100 miles to a 5K race.

you can convert kilometers to miles in your head.

your iPod has a “running” playlist.

you check out road races while on vacation.

you’ve converted your marathon medals into a wind chime.

you consider running 3 miles to be a warm up.

you know the shoe store guy better than some relatives.

you drive down the freeway and think to yourself, “Hey, my car is doing 1-minute miles.”

you know that PR stands for something other than Puerto Rico.

you use your bib numbers to wallpaper your garage.

your resting heart rate is too low to give blood.

you look forward to birthdays when your age changes to a number ending with a 0 or 5.

you consider your latest race shirt “formal wear.”

you mentally measure junk food in miles rather than calories.

you have your own name for all the local public trails.
