photo of Bill Rose finishing 5KThree hundred thirteen runners finished the Blue Hen Homecoming 5K last Friday at the University of Delaware Athletic Complex. Of those, four Creek Road Runners took home awards in special categories.

CRR Bill Rose (pictured) hasn’t lost a step in a few years now and proved that again with a third place overall finish in 19:22. Finishing first in the “UD Employee/Retiree” class, business school dean and CRR Bruce Weber posted a 20:36, coming in 7th overall. Not bad for his first of two weekend races. Taking third in the same class with a 20:50 was CRR Steve Tague, coming in 10th overall.

CRR Diane Kukich took third among the females in that same class in 26:26. She would have also won her ten-year age group (60-69). CRR Mark Deshon finished 14th overall but was 2nd among the “Alumni” runners in 21:07. Had there been a 50-59 age group, Rose and Weber would have placed 1st and 2nd, Tague and Deshon, 4th and 5th, respectively.

Speaking of “what if’s,” CRR Bob Taggart (26:34) and CRR Paul Amer (30:31) would have won the 70-and-over and 60-69 age groups, respectively. Nice job, guys.

A special shout-out to CRR Nick Sisofo, who made a rare appearance on campus with a 26:54. Thanks to CRR Kathy Corbitt and her HealthyU Employee Wellness staff for organizing a fun event around Homecoming Weekend.

Seconds, anyone?

In non-running news, the Amish Country Bike Tour saw four Creek Road Runners on bicycles. CRR Becky George and CRR Sue Barton did the 100-mile course. George averaged over 19mph! CRR Mark Deshon and CRR Skip White teamed up again, averaging just under 18mph over the 50-mile route.

Still running, and scattering neutrons in the process

photo of Henry GlydeUniversity of Delaware’s Unidel Professor of Physics and Astronomy and longtime CRR Henry Glyde was recently named a fellow of the Neutron Scattering Society of America for his research, which focuses on neutron scattering, low-temperature physics, and quantum fluids and solids. See story.

A native of Canada, Glyde has been running in this area for more than three decades. CRR Mark Deshon recalls meeting Glyde in the early 1980s. “He would run intervals with CRR Bob Bennett and me on the Newark High track, and neither of us could keep up with him for the entire workout. His last name accurately describes how easily he ran on the track.”

“Sacré bleu!”—national press

For all you runners who are also bicycle enthusiasts, you may have heard of or even be fanatical devotees of the annual Tour de France—cyclists’ 23-day version of an ultra-ultramarathon. And surely you’ve heard of deposed seven-time champion Lance Armstrong.

In all likelihood, though, you’ve never heard about the Tour de Lead Graffiti. That is, until now.

Tour de Lead Graffiti Stage 5 poster by CRR Mark Deshon, Ray Nichols, and Jill Cypher

CRR Mark Deshon gained some measure of national notoriety, as the letterpress poster that he had collaboratively designed and printed back in July of 2013 was published in the Dec. 16th, 2013, edition of Sports Illustrated, along with a small article on Lead Graffiti’s “Tour de Lead Graffiti” written by SI writer Alexander Wolff.

Wolff writes, “Each morning during the Tour de France, members of the [Newark, Del.] Lead Graffiti printmaking collective gathered to watch that day’s stage. They took note of every salient breakaway, pratfall and Phil Ligett bon mot, then spent the rest of the day producing a broadside that captured the action. The results—visible at leadgraffiti.com—are like the peloton, a riot of shapes and colors. The designers call what they do ‘endurance letterpress,’ for they repeat the routine 23 days in a row and, like the Tour itself, scrupulously post total elapsed time.”

Deshon was completely surprised. His reaction to leafing through the magazine he had just picked out of his mailbox and seeing his poster on page 25 was, “My poster. In a national magazine! How could this have happened?” Roughly translated into the native language of the Tour—“Sacré bleu!”

See the production story of the poster and Deshon’s own recollections.

CRR Mark Deshon and CRR Dan Simmons display their Turkey Trot 10K bling.

A brave few Creek Road Runners came out to celebrate the 40th running of Newark’s Turkey Trot, in both 10K and 5K options.

It was a windy morning, but that didn’t deter CRR Dan Simmons (65-69) from picking up another age-group first in the 10K by running a 43:14, crossing the line 32nd out of more than 300 participants. CRR Mark Deshon ran a solid 42:29 and was the 25th finisher to cross the line. He was actually the first finisher in his age group (55-59) but was awarded the 2nd-place trophy because the awards were determined by chip times (see editor’s note below). CRR Theresa Cannon won her age group (50-54) in 50:08.

In the 5K, 20-year-old CRR Jordan Deshon ran a PR of 18:22 and placed 4th overall, taking 1st in the 19-24 age group because the top three finishers each received separate awards. CRR Dan Simmons couldn’t get enough Turkey Trot and won his age group in the 5K as well with a 22:39.  On the female side, CRR Mary Braun came away with an age-group (50-54) 2nd place with a time of 27:36.

Editor’s note: Call it “old school,” but results posted on the Creek Road Runners site are based on gun times, not chip times.

You’re a real runner if…

acronyms like PR and DNF are verbs.

the thought of signing up for a 401K is scary.

your blood pressure is 92 over 56 and you are conscious.

you drive 100 miles to a 5K race.

you can convert kilometers to miles in your head.

your iPod has a “running” playlist.

you check out road races while on vacation.

you’ve converted your marathon medals into a wind chime.

you consider running 3 miles to be a warm up.

you know the shoe store guy better than some relatives.

you drive down the freeway and think to yourself, “Hey, my car is doing 1-minute miles.”

you know that PR stands for something other than Puerto Rico.

you use your bib numbers to wallpaper your garage.

your resting heart rate is too low to give blood.

you look forward to birthdays when your age changes to a number ending with a 0 or 5.

you consider your latest race shirt “formal wear.”

you mentally measure junk food in miles rather than calories.

you have your own name for all the local public trails.
