A couple Creek Road Runners had unique experiences in two races on September 15.

photo of Dave SchultzCRR Dave Schultz traveled just north of New York City to run the Shawangunk Ridge Trail Half-Marathon—a grueling 13.1 miles over rugged mountain terrain. The race website bills it as “an adventurous trail with scrambles and squeezes.” Well, it about squeezed every bit of energy out of the 52-year-old Schultz, who didn’t expect it to be quite as menacing. Beginning in Minnewaska State Park and ending in Rosedale, N.Y., he completed the course in just over three hours (3:01:45), finishing 19th overall (13th male finisher) and winning the men’s 50-59 age group.

photo of Bruce WeberRight here in Wilmington, CRR Bruce Weber had a very different experience, as he won the inaugural Last Alarm 5K, during which he figures he only ran about 4.67K. Though he had a significant lead over the second-place runner, Weber followed the lead of the city policeman’s motorcycle, who was leading the way but made a 180-degree turnaround too early in the middle of the race. So much for course management. Weber clocked in at 17:42 but figures he would have been closer to 19 flat and would have won anyway had he actually run 5K.

Was it the slightly cooler weather? Was it a net downhill? Are his treadmill workouts actually giving him an edge?

photo of Bruce WeberWhatever the key was, 58-year-old CRR Bruce Weber shaved significant seconds off of his typically fast (mid-19s) 5K times this past weekend at the Brew Works 5K in Wilmington. Placing second overall and taking the prize for the top master’s runner, Weber ran a 19:08, having been bested only by former University of Delaware standout Pat Boettcher, who is many years Weber’s junior.

Expect a great autumn racing year for this fast-twitch CRR.

photo of Bruce Weber57-year-old CRR Bruce Weber ran the Run for Kids’ Health 5K in Wilmington last Saturday but didn’t know that the race’s major competitors would all be in his age group (50-59). Fortunately, his 5K times have been consistently in the mid-19s lately.

In this particular race, the top three of 115 finishers were all age 50-59. The winner, Jorge Morales, a 52-year-old from Wilmington, ran an incredible 18:43 to win the race. Weber placed second in a time of 19:27, winning his age group by virtue of Morales having taken the top prize. Placing third overall and second in that age group was 58-year-old Greg Cauller in 19:42. Not bad for a bunch of seniors.

Fond farewell to Creek Road for Pusecker

On Monday, several Creek Road Runners gathered for a fun 5K down Creek Road in honor of CRR Paul Pusecker, whose time at the University of Delaware is ending this week. Several also gathered afterward for a lunch with him at the Deer Park Tavern.

Joining Paul Pusecker (in green shirt) for his farewell 5K were Vic Kaliakin, Mark Deshon, Bill Rose, Jeff Chase, Jordan Deshon, Rick Andrews, Julie Brewer, Steve Goodwin, Flora Poindexter, Avron Abraham, and Bruce Weber.

photo of Paul Pusecker finishingPusecker, who has served as senior chief business officer for the University of Delaware’s College of Arts and Sciences since 2001, will join St. Mary’s College of Maryland on July 1 as the public honors college’s vice president for business and finance/chief financial officer. Before coming to UD, Pusecker retired from the U.S. Army as a lieutenant colonel after more than 20 years of active duty service.

Pusecker has been a “regular” runner out on Creek Road for the 17 years he’s been on campus, along with small group of UD running companions who had popularized the “Lower Slower” and “Chateau Country” runs that were annual staples back in the day. More recently, he’s taken up bicycling to augment his fitness regimen. He will be missed out on Creek Road.

Delaware Marathon Festival victories

Sunday was a great day for Creek Road Runners, despite the unseasonably cool temperatures and added wind. Several participated in one of the events during the weekend, which included the Delaware Marathon, Half-Marathon, 4-Person Relay, and 5K.

photo of Andrew Weberphoto of Dan WeileOne Creek Road Runner—38-year-old CRR Andrew Weber—stood above all the rest (out of 699 finishers) in the Delaware Half-Marathon, winning in 1:22:34 and finishing a good five-and-a-half minutes ahead of the next runner. CRR Dan Weile punched his ticket for the podium by being the third man to finish (fifth overall) in 1:29:52. Both Weber (35-39) and Weile (45-49) would have won their respective age groups but had to settle for the bigger honor of having finished in the top three.

Another notable was CRR Kevin McCooey, who finished 4th among the 60-64s in 2:04:09.

In the 5K on Saturday, CRR Jeremy Firestone won the 60-64 age group in 23:25.

photo of first exchangephoto of 1st place team finish ticketThe Creek Road Runners 4-person relay team bested 49 other teams in winning the relay. With an average age of 56.5, the rather senior team of CRR Bill Rose (leadoff) CRR Bruce Weber (leg 2), CRR Mark Deshon (leg 3), and CRR Bill Farquhar (anchor) logged a combined time of 2:59:16, slower than their collective potential but well ahead of the second-place team. This is the best overall place finish of any Creek Road Runners team in the history of this race. Last year, the team placed third; the team was fifth in 2016.

photo of second exchangeAt age 59, Rose (45:03) gave the team the early lead it would not relinquish (exchanging with Weber in above photo), and the cushion that 50-year-old anchor Bill Farquhar (45:27) needed to treat this as an up-tempo training run for next week’s Broad Street Ten Miler. In between, the fastest time of the four—42:17—was turned in by the 57-year-old Weber on leg 2, and Deshon (three weeks shy of turning 62) stepped up his game to post a 46:29—18 seconds better than his relay leg in 2016 (Weber exchanging with Deshon in photo at right).

close-up photo of Bill Farquhar finishingWith the team squarely in the lead, each of the runners enjoyed the luxury of a lead vehicle, either a motorcycle or bicycle, to follow through the 6.55-mile relay course, something to which none of them is accustomed (Farquhar finishing in the photo at left; in photos below: Rose, Farquhar, and Deshon—holding Weber’s jacket during leg 2; Weber congratulating Farquhar after the finish).
