photo of Doug RepettiThe 45th annual Turkey Trot races in Newark saw Creek Road Runners garner four first place age-group awards; CRR Doug Repetti earned half of them, winning the 65-69 age group in both the 10K (50:34) and the 5K (24:30).

photo of Steve TagueCRR Steve Tague led the way in the 10K with a 46:25, placing 31st out of 176 finishers. At press time, there was no way of knowing how he did in his age group, because it seems that didn’t get recorded. Hmmm. Don’t want anyone to know how old you are, eh? We get it. Of course, there were other notables who are not that young anymore too.

CRR Theresa Kauffman captured 2nd among the 55-59s in the 10K with a 53:58, while CRR Julie Brewer turned in a 1:01:16.

photo of Mark DeshonIn the 5K, CRR Mark Deshon ran his best 5K time of the year, winning the 60-64s and placing 12th overall out of 444 finishers, with a 21:02. This race completed a “run” of 4-for-4 age-group wins in local races for Deshon in 2017. CRR Mary Braun finished 3rd among the 55-59s in 27:58. Multiple-state-record-holder CRR Bob Taggart placed 2nd in the 75-and-over age group in 31:10.

Newark Turkey Trot 10K/5K cartoonNext Saturday, Nov. 18, the Newark community will gather, pre-holiday eating, to run in the 45th Annual Turkey Trot 10K and 5K races on Barksdale Road. The 10K will start at 9:00 and the 5K at 10:30.

This classic road race provides variety in both its one-loop and two-loop choices, with mild (but sufficiently challenging) hills and but a few turns.

Register now online and save (before Nov. 15 at noon). Want to run both races? Save even more. Day-of registration begins at 8:00.

Mind-boggling milestone reached

10K, kukich, milestone

photo of Diane Kukich warming upJust as such a streak begins, the milestone arrived without great fanfare but with two key ingredients—desire and resolve.

CRR Diane Kukich had given some serious thought to what the appropriate workout might look like to mark her 10,000th consecutive day of some form of sustained physical activity. Why not do 10,000m? OK, but not an ordinary 10K run. After all, it’s 6 a.m. on a brisk January morning. How about a triathlon of sorts? That’s it, she thought.

photo of Diane Kukich rowingWhether walking, running, spinning, rowing, or swimming, Kukich has exercised every day now for some 27 years and four months. So, today Kukich celebrated her mind-boggling milestone with 2K on the rowing machine, 3K on the stationery bicycle (both just warmups), and a 5K run in the pre-dawn light.

Kukich, a writer at the University of Delaware, has exercised regularly since before her children were born; however, the streak of consecutive days officially began after a brief respite that followed the birth of her youngest child, Christine, way back in 1989.

photo of Diane Kukich cyclingInterestingly enough, Kukich was about ten years into the streak when CRR Mark Deshon talked her into running, having seen that she was taking home hardware for walking in local races, week in and week out. She immediately became an age-group competitor in running shoes and, since then, has mixed in running with other forms of aerobic workouts.

Kukich is the current state record holder in the 50-54 age group for the 20K distance, a record she set in 2002. With respect to near-term aspirations, she has her eye on both the 5K and 5-mile state records in the 65-69 age group. She turns 65 next month.

photo of Diane Kukich runningOne would say that Kukich is certainly in the top tenth of a percent of all humans when it comes to this kind of fitness regimen, but Creek Road Runners would simply say she’s in a class of her own.

Deshon was there early to document Kukich’s milestone, and though he’s not normally an early riser, he knows that all it took for him to be there were the same two ingredients Kukich demonstrates each day.

Congratulations, Diane Kukich on your amazing display of desire and resolve!

Several Creek Road Runners took to burning calories by racing over the Thanksgiving week, some prior to the feast, some a couple days after. Here are the ones who came away with good performances.

kukich2In the Run for Pie 5K in Newark on Thanksgiving morning, CRR Diane Kukich won her age group (60-69) in a solid 23:47. CRR Bill Farquhar placed 2nd in the 40-49s with a 21:43, a mere warmup to what he would do two days later. CRR Theresa Kauffman placed 3rd in the 50-59s in 26:04.

photo of Bruce WeberIn Wilmington, the bigger races were taking place. In the PNC Bank 5K, CRR Bruce Weber took first place among the 55-59s in a fast 18:55. CRR Ann Jornlin placed 2nd in the 60-64s with a 25:48. In the 10K, CRR Doug Repetti got on the podium for a 3rd place finish among the 65-69s, finishing in 52:34.

photo of Bill FarquharOn Saturday at the Delaware Open XC Championships, in a grueling 5K, CRR Bill Farquhar placed 8th overall in the Men’s Masters race and 5th in his age group (40-49) in a brilliant 19:28—super fast for that course! CRR Keith Crispin placed 14th overall and 9th in the same age group with a very good 20:39. Earlier this year both runners helped the CRR team break three hours in the Delaware Marathon Four-Person Relay.

Great job, everyone.

photo of Dan WeileSaturday was a glorious day for racing (or pretty much any activity) in Newark. CRR Dan Weile took full advantage of the sunshine and mild temperatures during the 44th annual Turkey Trot, winning his age group (40-44) in the 10K and placing 3rd among his age-group peers in the 5K (just for a cool-down, we suppose). He was the 25th finisher (out of 185) in the 10K in 43:25 and 31st overall (out of 525 participants) in the 5K in 21:59, both solid times.

photo of Doug RepettiOther award winners in the 10K included CRR Doug Repetti, who won his age group (65-69) in 53:20, and CRR Teresa Kauffman, who placed 2nd in her age group (50-54) in 53:58.

taggartComing off heart surgery early this year, CRR Bob Taggart won his age group (75-79) in the 5K in 30:03. A 5K footnote—had CRR Mark Deshon actually registered for the race (he only did three of the 3.1 miles), he would have won his age group (60-64) by about three minutes.

A special shout-out to CRR Andy Haines (30-34), who ran the 10K in 57:46.

You’re a real runner if…

acronyms like PR and DNF are verbs.

the thought of signing up for a 401K is scary.

your blood pressure is 92 over 56 and you are conscious.

you drive 100 miles to a 5K race.

you can convert kilometers to miles in your head.

your iPod has a “running” playlist.

you check out road races while on vacation.

you’ve converted your marathon medals into a wind chime.

you consider running 3 miles to be a warm up.

you know the shoe store guy better than some relatives.

you drive down the freeway and think to yourself, “Hey, my car is doing 1-minute miles.”

you know that PR stands for something other than Puerto Rico.

you use your bib numbers to wallpaper your garage.

your resting heart rate is too low to give blood.

you look forward to birthdays when your age changes to a number ending with a 0 or 5.

you consider your latest race shirt “formal wear.”

you mentally measure junk food in miles rather than calories.

you have your own name for all the local public trails.
