video screenshot of Diane Kukich from Wilmington News JournalWhen CRR Diane Kukich commits to something, she seriously commits. For much of her adult life she has kept fit by working out, by exercising in one form or another—either walking, running, swimming, or biking. Now she’s approaching an impressive, and somewhat unimaginable, milestone. Kukich is closing in on 10,000 consecutive days of exercise—that’s about 27 years and 4 months, day in and day out. See video / read full story (including quotes from CRR Steve Goodwin and an inspirational nod to CRR Cole Galloway).

Kukich still holds the Delaware state resident record for the 50-54 age group at the 20K distance (set in 2002 – see state records held by Creek Road Runners).

You go, girl!

CRR Steve Goodwin sits among Delaware supporters at a USA women’s Olympic team basketball game.

goodwinFirst-person accounts are essential, so CRR Steve Goodwin provides a glimpse of his experiences so far at the Olympic Games in Rio.

“I have gotten a few runs in along the beach in Mangaratiba and Sao Paulo. There is an incredibly steep and long hill; I am going to try to conquer it tomorrow. I did about 80%. It is easily the steepest hill I have ever run and it is about 1/5 of a mile. Brutal! Charlie [CRR Charlie Riordan] may not even like this one!

“We have also played soccer a number of times, including on Copacabana Beach. It was a real international affair with players from Brazil, USA, Mexico, and Finland. Enjoying the Games. Going to beach volleyball tomorrow. Have already seen the Women’s basketball (saw USA and Elena [Delle Donne]), men’s soccer, and team handball. We [will be] going to track and field, badminton, and the women’s soccer semis. Tickets are inexpensive and readily available.”

photo of Matt Robinson speaking at IOC HQCRR Matt Robinson, while he was the Interim Athletic Director at the University of Delaware, worked behind the scenes to help bring to the Bob Carpenter Center a showcase pre-Olympic event, featuring the women’s USA Basketball team, .

“The Delaware Sport Commission (DSC) is excited about the opportunity to work with USA Basketball again and further strengthen our relationship with the U.S. Olympic Movement,” said Robinson, chairman of the commission and sport management professor at UD. “The DSC, UD Athletics, and Gene Delle Donne worked with USA Basketball throughout the spring to get it done. It was a true team effort. As a UD faculty member, hosting such a high-profile international event fits with the University’s mission of being a global university. Finally and most importantly, it is great that Elena [Delle Donne] will have the chance to play before her Delaware family before chasing her dream of winning gold at the Rio Games.”

What Robinson neglected to mention is that it’ll be a chance for UConn/USA Coach Geno Auriemma to visit the place where Elena Delle Donne played her college ball.

bear-sighting notice by City of NewarkToday a black bear was spotted in Newark. This comes on the same day that a News Journal article mentioned two other sightings here in New Castle County. Creek Road Runners are urged to keep an eye out. If you spot a bear while out on Creek Road, don’t get too close because bears are fast too.

You’re a real runner if…

acronyms like PR and DNF are verbs.

the thought of signing up for a 401K is scary.

your blood pressure is 92 over 56 and you are conscious.

you drive 100 miles to a 5K race.

you can convert kilometers to miles in your head.

your iPod has a “running” playlist.

you check out road races while on vacation.

you’ve converted your marathon medals into a wind chime.

you consider running 3 miles to be a warm up.

you know the shoe store guy better than some relatives.

you drive down the freeway and think to yourself, “Hey, my car is doing 1-minute miles.”

you know that PR stands for something other than Puerto Rico.

you use your bib numbers to wallpaper your garage.

your resting heart rate is too low to give blood.

you look forward to birthdays when your age changes to a number ending with a 0 or 5.

you consider your latest race shirt “formal wear.”

you mentally measure junk food in miles rather than calories.

you have your own name for all the local public trails.
