Well, the news story video centered on 70-year-old Guy DeLillio and his friend Jack Garniewski, Salesianum class of 1971 alumni who ran in this year’s Penn Relays as part of the Delaware Running Club masters 400m relay team. But, our own CRR Bill Rose (center in the photo), who is nearing 65, was also on the team that competed and appears in the video.

Here’s an excerpt of how Rose described his experience at this hallowed meet.

We were 6th out of 6 teams that finished [out of the] 10 teams registered. Two teams did not start (not surprising for 60+ teams).  One team was DQd for false start, and one team was DNF due to a fall. We did it in 68+ seconds. Our goal, which we claimed when we registered, was 68-72 seconds. We are happy and proud to have competed and finished.

Our sprint speed, if sustained, would equal a 14:10 5K—about a minute slower than Sam Parsons’ pace. [World best marathoner] Eliud Kipchoge runs 14:20 pace for a whole marathon. So I could keep up with [Kipchoge] for 100 meters, if I do a max sprint.

Anyone who has seen Rose train knows that he starts his training runs fast (seemingly close to “max sprint”) and keeps it going.

Those of you who have been following the running exploits of CRR Bill Rose on CreekRoadRunners.org will know better than to believe that the word “rookie” in any way applies to him, both as a competitive runner and as a local age-group standout.

OK, well Rose, who has enjoyed an extensive running and racing career, was honored last week by the Pike Creek Valley Running Club at its annual banquet as PCVRC’s 2022 Rookie of the Year. Not a bad return for someone who joined the club less than a year ago.

In recent years, Rose has done well at the shorter-distance races and was the stalwart captain of CRR’s successful Delaware Marathon 4-Person Relay teams.

We salute Rose, who recently retired from the University of Delaware and has been organizing CRR’s annual “Wring Out the Old, Ring in the New” trail run since 2019.

Congratulations and continued good running and racing!

Running with the Greater Philadelphia Track Club, CRR Bruce Weber was our second fastest runner. He finished 87th overall in 32:30 and placed 11th out of the 29 runners in the 60-64 age group. His age grade score was 80.1, which is considered “national class.” By age grade, Weber placed 59th overall.

CRR Bill Rose, running for the northern Delaware–based Pike Creek Valley Running Club (PCVRC), placed 24th in the 60-64 age group with a 35:34, finishing 118th overall.

In the 55-59 age group, CRR Keith Crispin, also running for PCVRC and placing 24th among his age group, placed 148th overall in 38:45.

Ridge, Rose, and Crispin all had age grade scores in the mid 70s, which is considered “regional class.”

A good showing for Creek Road Runners on the national stage. Congrats to each!

Once again, the CRR duo of unrelated Webers shone in a local race. In the annual UD Homecoming 5K, CRR Andrew Weber and CRR Bruce Weber both finished in the top six, the aforementioned (Andrew) winning the race outright in a stellar 17:19 and the latter (Bruce) placing 6th and winning the 60-69 age group in 19:19. Bruce’s age grade of 82.9 (which is considered “national class”) for this race was the highest of all the participants.

You’re a real runner if…

acronyms like PR and DNF are verbs.

the thought of signing up for a 401K is scary.

your blood pressure is 92 over 56 and you are conscious.

you drive 100 miles to a 5K race.

you can convert kilometers to miles in your head.

your iPod has a “running” playlist.

you check out road races while on vacation.

you’ve converted your marathon medals into a wind chime.

you consider running 3 miles to be a warm up.

you know the shoe store guy better than some relatives.

you drive down the freeway and think to yourself, “Hey, my car is doing 1-minute miles.”

you know that PR stands for something other than Puerto Rico.

you use your bib numbers to wallpaper your garage.

your resting heart rate is too low to give blood.

you look forward to birthdays when your age changes to a number ending with a 0 or 5.

you consider your latest race shirt “formal wear.”

you mentally measure junk food in miles rather than calories.

you have your own name for all the local public trails.
