16th annual run sees another record turnout

Despite below-freezing temperatures, 24 hearty souls and one ready-for-a-long-run canine came out to participate in the 16th annual “Wring Out the Old, Ring in the New” trail run at the Fair Hill Natural Resource Management Area’s Black Bridge Road parking lot on the last day of 2014.

This year was highlighted by, count ’em, 11 women—coming out in force to share this unique New Year’s Eve day experience for themselves—and a special appearance by self-appointed CEO CRR Matt Robinson. Special thanks to photographer Doug Baker, husband of CRR Diane Kukich, for taking so many good photos (sorry we only had room for a few).

Kukich takes age-group 9th in nationals, Ridge places 10th at age 70

CRR Diane Kukich at XC Club Nationals

Though she’s not a runner who takes well to cross country, CRR Diane Kukich is one who typically takes on a challenge, particularly if she sees in it a unique opportunity. Such was the case as she, CRR Keith Crispin, CRR Theresa Cannon, and CRR Doug Ridge competed in the USATF 2014 XC Club Nationals at Lehigh University on Saturday. So close to home that Kukich just had to do it.

Kukich finished an impressive 9th in her age group (60-64) with a 29:16 over the women’s 6,000m course. Cannon just broke the 30-minute barrier, finishing in 29:59, placing 48th among the 50-54s.

Crispin covered the men’s 10K course in a very respectable 39:46. Not bad for a 47-year-old.

ridgeA rather new septuagenarian, Ridge finished 10th among his 70-and-over peers in 52:54. Here’s how Ridge described the experience:

“XC & track may be the only sports where Olympians and 70-year-old amateurs compete in the same event. It is exciting just to be part of it. I enjoyed meeting my teammates and sensing the excitement of the field of runners from so many clubs and so many places. I hadn’t run in spikes in 50 years—since I was on Harvard’s freshman cross-country team. I have seldom run competitively on a course with such a history. It is a great memory to have.”

Each ran for the Pike Creek Valley Running Club.

At two recent races, one regional and one local, Creek Road Runners shone nearly as bright as the dimming late-autumn sun.

photo of Jay CoughenourCRR Jay Coughenour ran the Philadelphia Half Marathon in a splendid time of 1:18:53. His chip time of 1:18:34 put him just a fraction of a second under a six-minute-per-mile pace for the 13.1-mile distance. Coughenour was the second finisher in the 45-49 age group and placed 85th the among men and 91st overall. Excellent at age 49!

photo of Keith CrispinIn the Reindeeer Run & Romp 5K, held here in Newark on Friday night, CRR Keith Crispin placed 10th overall out of 406 finishers, winning the 45-49 age group in 18:52. CRR Dan Simmons, just coming off an injury, won the 65-69 age group in 23:53, and CRR Diane Kukich won her age group (60-64) in 24:11. Other age-group awardees included CRR Bill Rose, who took second place among the 55-59s in a very respectable 19:58, and CRR Sue Barton, who placed third among the 55-59s in 28:06.

In non-running-related news, rumor has it that CRR Charlie Riordan lit up the court at The Bob recently with a halftime free-throw-shooting exhibition. Now we know where he’s been training. We know “Charlie Runs on Dunkin’”; the question is Can he dunk on Dunkin’?

CEO quoted in concussion summit article

photo of Matt RobinsonCRR Matt Robinson, self-appointed CEO of the Creek Road Runners was quoted in a University of Delaware article about the state’s Second Youth Concussion Summit. On Nov. 20, close to 50 representatives from the state’s medical community, advocacy groups, the Delaware Athletic Trainers’ Association, school nurses, state politicians, and educators convened at the University of Delaware to discuss the issue. Robinson said, “While it appears protocols are in place at the higher levels of sport participation in the state, there is still a need to promote best practices in the youth sport environment. I hope today’s program is a first step in ensuring that all athletes at every level will be impacted by the best practices being implemented.” CRR Diane Kukich wrote the story. Read the article

Homecoming 5K awardees

photo of Bill Rose finishing 5KThree hundred thirteen runners finished the Blue Hen Homecoming 5K last Friday at the University of Delaware Athletic Complex. Of those, four Creek Road Runners took home awards in special categories.

CRR Bill Rose (pictured) hasn’t lost a step in a few years now and proved that again with a third place overall finish in 19:22. Finishing first in the “UD Employee/Retiree” class, business school dean and CRR Bruce Weber posted a 20:36, coming in 7th overall. Not bad for his first of two weekend races. Taking third in the same class with a 20:50 was CRR Steve Tague, coming in 10th overall.

CRR Diane Kukich took third among the females in that same class in 26:26. She would have also won her ten-year age group (60-69). CRR Mark Deshon finished 14th overall but was 2nd among the “Alumni” runners in 21:07. Had there been a 50-59 age group, Rose and Weber would have placed 1st and 2nd, Tague and Deshon, 4th and 5th, respectively.

Speaking of “what if’s,” CRR Bob Taggart (26:34) and CRR Paul Amer (30:31) would have won the 70-and-over and 60-69 age groups, respectively. Nice job, guys.

A special shout-out to CRR Nick Sisofo, who made a rare appearance on campus with a 26:54. Thanks to CRR Kathy Corbitt and her HealthyU Employee Wellness staff for organizing a fun event around Homecoming Weekend.
