graphic of old lady dog runningFor real trail enthusiasts, the Trail Dawgs Athletic Club will host the annual Triple Crown trail races on April 26th at the Walter S. Carpenter Recreation Area of White Clay Creek State Park, off New London Road (Rt. 896) in Newark. “Unique” only scratches the surface as a description of this event.  Just ask organizer and CRR John Mackenzie how much fun these off-road races are.

You can run any of these races individually or participate in the Triple Crown (half, 10K, and 5K) either individually or as part of a three-person team. Proceeds benefit local homeless shelters. See the TrailDawgs website for details.

Here are the start times:
7:30 a.m. – Triple Crown Half-Marathon
7:40 a.m. – Delaware Trail Marathon (two loops of the half-marathon course)
10:00 a.m. – Triple Crown 10K
11:15 a.m. – Triple Crown Human Race 5K Run/Walk

photo of Dan SimmonsNewark’s CRR Dan Simmons claimed 2nd in the 65-69 age group with a solid 1:39:17, finishing 206th overall.

photo of Keith CrispinBlazing through the course and finishing 47th overall, Bear’s CRR Keith Crispin ran a 1:25:26 to take 4th place among a very competitive 45-49 age group.

Other notables: CRR Jay Coughenour ran a 1:31:24*, which is a good time for most, but he was obviously not running at his full potential. CRR Ryan German ran with Simmons most of the way but pulled ahead to finish in 1:38:10*.

CRR Christina Parsons finished her first marathon in under four hours, clocking in at 3:55:32. This placed her 13th in her age group (45-49) and 280th overall, out of 806 finishers.

CRR Theresa Kauffman finished 9th among the 50-54s and 256th overall with a 1:50:34. CRR Rachel Strickland finished in 2:31:45, plus she ran along with Parent to help her finish the marathon, despite some painful tendinitis. A good day’s work.

You’re a real runner if…

acronyms like PR and DNF are verbs.

the thought of signing up for a 401K is scary.

your blood pressure is 92 over 56 and you are conscious.

you drive 100 miles to a 5K race.

you can convert kilometers to miles in your head.

your iPod has a “running” playlist.

you check out road races while on vacation.

you’ve converted your marathon medals into a wind chime.

you consider running 3 miles to be a warm up.

you know the shoe store guy better than some relatives.

you drive down the freeway and think to yourself, “Hey, my car is doing 1-minute miles.”

you know that PR stands for something other than Puerto Rico.

you use your bib numbers to wallpaper your garage.

your resting heart rate is too low to give blood.

you look forward to birthdays when your age changes to a number ending with a 0 or 5.

you consider your latest race shirt “formal wear.”

you mentally measure junk food in miles rather than calories.

you have your own name for all the local public trails.
