This past weekend saw several Creek Road Runners participate at various distances in local events. The notables are as follows:

photo of Andrew Weberphoto of Bruce WeberIn the 11th Annual Main Street Mile race in Newark, two guys with the same last name, who are related only by their fleetness of foot, cracked the top 15 in this short race of 813 participants. CRR Andrew Weber posted the fastest time among Creek Road Runners, finishing 9th overall in a lightning-fast 5:08, good for 2nd in the 30-39 age group. CRR Bruce Weber wasn’t far behind, finishing 14th overall and taking 1st among the 50-59s in 5:32. In terms of age grading, the elder Weber’s time garnered a 90.2 grade, which is considered “world class” for his age group. The younger Weber’s 84.3 is considered “national class.” Both impressive, to say the least. An honorable mention, Newark’s Deputy Mayor CRR Andrew Haines turned in a 7:15.

photo of Bill Farquharphoto of Keith CrispinIn a much longer race, the Pike Creek Valley Running Club’s annual Delaware Distance Classic 15K, there were four standouts. Of the 191 participants in this race, CRR Bill Farquhar came in 7th overall, finishing in 58:51 and winning the 45-49 age group. Watch out for him within the next year when he turns 50! CRR Keith Crispin took 2nd in the 50-54 age group with a 1:06:38, good for 28th overall.

photo of Robert HeskethNew Jersey resident and one of the original Creek Road Runners, 57-year-old CRR Robert Hesketh, posted a 1:11:37, finishing 45th and taking only 7th place in a tough age group (55-59). CRR Doug Repetti, 66 years of age, was 70th in 1:17:46, and CRR Theresa Kauffman finished 113th in 1:25:52.

photo of Bill RoseIn the CASA 5K, CRR Bill Rose, running in his first 5K in a year’s time, finished 4th overall out of 38 runners in 19:59. The course was entirely on the University of Delaware central campus in Newark—three laps of The Green. Nothing like a long lap!

photo of Dimitri Kaliakin after ultramarathonIn a slightly longer race on Sunday, Dimitri “Dima” Kaliakin, youngest son of CRR Vic Kaliakin completed his first ultramarathon, the grueling Tussey Mountain 50-miler, just outside State College, Pa. The 20-year-old Washington College grad completed the up-and-down 50-mile distance in 6:45:34, finishing 5th overall and 4th among non-masters runners. This included a total elevation gain of 5,485 feet, 1,301 feet of which occurred during one 4.1-mile stretch (from the course’s lowest to highest point). Back in May, Dima placed 12th overall out of 326 finishers in the Delaware Marathon in 3:06:07. We shorter-distance Creek Road Runners salute you, Dima!

This weekend saw the Creek Road Runners perform at their collective best during the Delaware Marathon Running Festival.

When one race just isn’t good enough (or apparently long enough), CRR Diane Kukich doubles up. She ran and won the 65-69 age group in the 5K on Saturday evening in 24:47 and then celebrated Mother’s Day by winning the same age group in the Half Marathon in 2:10:21. No doubt her daughter Christine, who also ran both races, was her inspiration, …or is it the other way around?

photo of Andrew Weberphoto of Dan WeileLocal standout and 37-year-old CRR Andrew Weber placed 2nd overall out of 821 finishers in the Half Marathon, with a stellar time of 1:21:27. Wow! CRR Dan Weile cracked the top 20 himself in the Half, running a 1:33:49 and taking 3rd in the 40-44 age group.

photo of Tripp ShentonJust having come off a 3:51:28 finish at the Boston Marathon, CRR Tripp Shenton placed 58th overall in the Half Marathon with a 1:40:18, giving him a 2nd place finish among the 55-59s.

Of particular note was Dimitri Kaliakin (son of CRR Vic Kaliakin), who placed 12th overall out of 328 finishers in the Marathon with a wonderful 3:06:07, a pace of approximately 7:05 per mile for the 26.2-mile distance. Kaliakin placed 2nd in the 20-24 age group.

Creek Road Runners team 2017

CRRs Rose, Farquhar, Weber, and Crispin

In the event where Creek Road Runners have historically shone brightly—the Marathon Relay, two CRR teams placed in the top 10 out of the 92 teams that competed.

The “Creek Road Runners” team smashed its own team record, set last year, by nearly 5 minutes, finishing 3rd overall in 2:48:26, and (by virtue of the winning team being a masters team as well) took top prize in the masters category!

Marathon Relay team finishCRR Bill Rose ran a 44:06 in the first of four 6.55-mile legs. CRR Bruce Weber, despite having encountered some calf cramping and having to walk a bit, finished leg two in a quick 41:16. CRR Keith Crispin, who a week ago ran a 1:04:33 at the Broad Street Ten Miler, finished leg three in 43:08. The fastest and youngest (turns 50 this fall) of the team, CRR Bill Farquhar, who ran 59:54 at Broad Street, sizzled in the final leg with a 39:56!

CRRs Dombroski, Chappell, Brett, and DiIorio

The Creek Road Runners “B” team (a.k.a. “Team UMS”) of CRR Kyle Chappell (46:11), CRR Joe Dombroski (55:23), CRR Bob DiIorio (57:24), and CRR Andrew Brett (47:57) finished in 9th place overall, clocking a combined time of 3:26:55.

Well done, everyone!

This year’s annual Reindeer Run 5K, a unique Friday evening race in Newark to kick off the holiday season, saw two Creek Road Runners take age group wins. CRR Keith Crispin finished 21st overall out of 1,168 participants, taking the 45-49 age group in a fast 18:21. CRR Diane Kukich finished 129th, winning the 60-64 age group in 23:48. Up, up, and away!

Several Creek Road Runners took to burning calories by racing over the Thanksgiving week, some prior to the feast, some a couple days after. Here are the ones who came away with good performances.

kukich2In the Run for Pie 5K in Newark on Thanksgiving morning, CRR Diane Kukich won her age group (60-69) in a solid 23:47. CRR Bill Farquhar placed 2nd in the 40-49s with a 21:43, a mere warmup to what he would do two days later. CRR Theresa Kauffman placed 3rd in the 50-59s in 26:04.

photo of Bruce WeberIn Wilmington, the bigger races were taking place. In the PNC Bank 5K, CRR Bruce Weber took first place among the 55-59s in a fast 18:55. CRR Ann Jornlin placed 2nd in the 60-64s with a 25:48. In the 10K, CRR Doug Repetti got on the podium for a 3rd place finish among the 65-69s, finishing in 52:34.

photo of Bill FarquharOn Saturday at the Delaware Open XC Championships, in a grueling 5K, CRR Bill Farquhar placed 8th overall in the Men’s Masters race and 5th in his age group (40-49) in a brilliant 19:28—super fast for that course! CRR Keith Crispin placed 14th overall and 9th in the same age group with a very good 20:39. Earlier this year both runners helped the CRR team break three hours in the Delaware Marathon Four-Person Relay.

Great job, everyone.

photo of Dan WeileSaturday was a glorious day for racing (or pretty much any activity) in Newark. CRR Dan Weile took full advantage of the sunshine and mild temperatures during the 44th annual Turkey Trot, winning his age group (40-44) in the 10K and placing 3rd among his age-group peers in the 5K (just for a cool-down, we suppose). He was the 25th finisher (out of 185) in the 10K in 43:25 and 31st overall (out of 525 participants) in the 5K in 21:59, both solid times.

photo of Doug RepettiOther award winners in the 10K included CRR Doug Repetti, who won his age group (65-69) in 53:20, and CRR Teresa Kauffman, who placed 2nd in her age group (50-54) in 53:58.

taggartComing off heart surgery early this year, CRR Bob Taggart won his age group (75-79) in the 5K in 30:03. A 5K footnote—had CRR Mark Deshon actually registered for the race (he only did three of the 3.1 miles), he would have won his age group (60-64) by about three minutes.

A special shout-out to CRR Andy Haines (30-34), who ran the 10K in 57:46.

acronyms like PR and DNF are verbs.

your blood pressure is 92 over 56 and you are conscious.

you drive 100 miles to a 5K race.

you can convert kilometers to miles in your head.

your iPod has a “running” playlist.

you check out road races while on vacation.

you’ve converted your marathon medals into a wind chime.

you consider running 3 miles to be a warm up.

you know the shoe store guy better than some relatives.

you drive down the freeway and think to yourself, “Hey, my car is doing 1-minute miles.”

you know that PR stands for something other than Puerto Rico.

you use your bib numbers to wallpaper your garage.

your resting heart rate is too low to give blood.

you look forward to birthdays when your age changes to a number ending with a 0 or 5.

you consider your latest race shirt “formal wear.”

you mentally measure junk food in miles rather than calories.

you have your own name for all the local public trails.
