CRRs shine in annual Turkey Trot

In the second longest historical race in Delaware, four Creek Road Runners collected age group awards in Newark on Saturday, November 20, either in the 10K or the 5K…

…or both in CRR Doug Repetti’s case! He did what we’ll call “the Repetti” by winning his age group in each of the two races. In the earlier 10K, he ran a 56:08, taking first in the over-70 division and finishing 54th out of 99 competitors. Then he ran the 5K in 27:19, winning the 70-74 age group.

While not winning his age group, the fastest Creek Road Runner on the day was CRR Bill Farquhar, who did manage to take a 2nd among the 50-54s, finishing 17th overall out of 409 5K finishers in a very solid 20:38. Farquhar doesn’t compete in many Newark races, so it was good to see him out there representing our crew.

CRR Diane Kukich won her 65-69 age group in the 5K with a time of 25:49. Despite winning her age group, Kukich merely took 3rd among her own family, as son Alex and daughter Christine, visiting from Baltimore, finished ahead of her. Then again, she’s several years their senior!

77-year-old running veteran CRR Doug Ridge also took home some 5K hardware, winning the 75-79 age group in 29:50.

Kukich crushes the pandemic

photo of Diane Kukich outside Carpenter Sports BuildingSo, it’s been relatively silent here at CreekRoadRunners.org since the Covid-19 pandemic gripped our region and the world. However, that doesn’t mean that runners have not found ways to adapt and stay in shape and, yes, even “compete” (For example, see the previous story, posted three months ago.)

Such is the case with CRR Diane Kukich, the Newark woman with the still-intact streak of more than 10,000 consecutive days of workouts, dating back some 30 years. So, it figures that, while not a fanatic racer, she would design ways to push herself and compete (against the clock) as one of the top masters females in the area.

photo of Diane Kukich's Crushing the Pandemic plaque and ribbonEnter the Crush the Pandemic competition, organized by Tri-Sports Charitable Events. The competition involved ten 5Ks, all self-timed. Perfect for Kukich, who simply pushed herself while working this into her fitness routine.

And, voila! Kukich took home (er, was mailed) hardware for winning the female masters category with the fastest cumulative time (4:25:27) for her series of 5K runs. That equates to a 26:33 average per 5K—not bad for anyone, let alone someone in the 65-69 age bracket.

Such a unique concept and award. Hopefully, we won’t have to see such a thing become the norm.

photo of Andrew WeberNotably absent from last Saturday’s Turkey Trot races here in Newark was CRR Andrew Weber. That’s because he ran the Philadelphia Marathon on Sunday. The 40-year-old Weber placed 400th overall in a huge field, breaking the 3-hour mark in 2:59:44 and qualifying for the Boston Marathon in the process. Congratulations to him on a major accomplishment in his new age group.

photo of Bill FarquharIn the Rothman Orthopedics 8K (rough metric equivalent of a five-mile race), part of the Philadelphia Marathon Weekend, 52-year-old CRR Bill Farquhar finished in 29:59, 4th in his age group and 122nd overall (out of 4,130 competitors). That’s a six-minute/mile pace for this speedy senior!

On Thanksgiving Day, the annual PNC Bank 10K and 5K races were contested in Wilmington, Del. Two of our, shall we say, more senior runners won their respective age groups, and another captured a third place.

A week later in Newark, the 68-year-old Repetti took top honors in his age group in the Reindeer Run 5K with a solid 24:41.

Turkey Trot winners

illustration of turkey with running shoesChilly, but calm, conditions provided a near ideal day for the 47th Annual Turkey Trot 10K and 5K races here in Newark. There were several notables among the Creek Road Runners, as several took age-group awards.

photo of Clark RidgeIn the 10K, CRR Clark Ridge of College Park, Md., placed 4th overall (out of the 195 finishers) and took 1st among the 35-39 men in a fast 36:38. (Yes, the photo at left is one from his college days.)

Competing in his first open 10K ever, CRR Kyle Chappell, of Landenberg, Pa., placed 20th overall and 1st among the 55-59s, clocking in at 43:52. Super debut at this distance! CRR Dan Simmons, visiting from Atascadera, Calif., won the 70-74 age group in 52:43. Coming in just ahead of Simmons was CRR Doug Repetti with a 52:04, taking 3rd among the 65-69s.

photo of Mark DeshonIn the 5K, CRR Mark Deshon led the Creek Road Runners, placing 39th overall (out of 541 finishers) and turning in an inspired 7-min./mile pacing at 21:42, taking 1st place in the 60-64 age group. This is Deshon’s 10th consecutive age-group win, dating back four years to the 2015 Turkey Trot. OK, the jinx is now on!

Remarkably, CRR Doug Repetti doubled his pleasure by exactly halving his 10K time, finishing in 26:02 and taking 2nd place in his age group! Also competing in both races was CRR Dan Simmons (hey, if you’re coming all the way across the country, you might as well run twice), taking 3rd place among the 70-74s with a 38:33.

On the female side, CRR Christine Schultz took third in the 45-49 age group, posting a 28:25 for her 5K.

A word of note here—reminder that, whenever possible, CreekRoadRunners.org displays gun time, not chip time, traditionalists as we may be. So, occasionally explanations like the following are necessary.

In the case of CRR Doug Ridge (father of Clark), who took 2nd among the 75-79s in 34:05 while running with his grandson, he crossed the line six seconds ahead of CRR Paul Amer, who finished 3rd in the 65-69 age group with a 34:11. However, Amer actually ran the course seven seconds faster than did Ridge, based on their respective chip times.

Anyway, congratulations to all. Now, go have some turkey.

Taking the “safe” out of Safety Harbor

Probably not the best decision I have ever made, but…

photo of medals from Safety Harbor 5K and 10K…I had signed up to do the half marathon of the Best Damn Race in Safety Harbor, Fla., a race I had done seven years ago for its inaugural run. They have really fun medals.

My foot hurt so bad on my last training run the previous Sunday that I could only do five miles and had to walk a lot of that. The race organizers let me transfer to the 5K/10K Challenge. Still 9.3 miles, but I saved nearly four miles of pounding on my foot.

photo of meme from Monty Python and the Holy GrailI did the 10K at 7 a.m. then the 5K at 9:00. I got a medal for each event and a third for having done the combo. It hurt every single step, so probably not the best decision (hence the meme about being in denial). This is the same injury that kept me from doing the Wring Out the Old [at the end of 2018], but it seemed like it had been getting better.

I like to practice medicine without a license and know a little about anatomy, but I’m seeing a podiatrist this week to find out what the problem is, and, hopefully, I’ll have a real diagnosis. Likely a long time away from running in order to rehab. Just as well, because cycling season is just around the corner, and I can start training (I have the bike hooked to a trainer in the basement) for the Monkey Knife Fight on April 6—a 30-mile hilly ride in Emmaus, Pa.

Oh well, you just can’t keep some runners down. But, as a general rule, we don’t recommend running injured. Stay healthy in 2019 everyone!
