October is bustling with a variety of races (see more upcoming). Some of our Creek Road Runners are taking full advantage.

photo of Andrew WeberCRR Andrew Weber won the second annual Run the Rock 5K last weekend, in a blistering 17:54, finishing more than two minutes ahead of the second-place finisher.

photo of Bill RoseIn the Run Inspired 10K at Winterthur, CRR Bill Rose placed 22nd overall out of 1,398 finishers and bested 87 others in his age group (50-59) in 43:10. CRR Dan Weile, who ran a 44:21, placed 29th overall and 6th out of 105 in his age group (40-49). The weekend before last, Rose placed second overall out of 97 runners in the hilly Paradocx Vineyard Run Through the Grapes in 21:48.

photo of Bruce WeberIn the Smith-McMillan 5K last weekend, CRR Bruce Weber finished fourth overall out of 185 participants, winning his age group (50-59) in 19:16.

kukich2Two weekends ago in the inaugural Deer Park Goes Pink 5K, CRR Diane Kukich won her age group (60-69) and placed 48th overall out of 344 participants in 24:59.

Well done, each of you!

It was a good morning for racing—two lanes all to the runners in Newark in the 10th Annual Main Street Mile. There were many Creek Road Runners who participated, and a few of them turned in performances well worth mentioning (all chip times*).

photo of Andrew Weberphoto of Clark RidgeThe fastest of the CRRs was CRR Andrew Weber, who just edged out CRR Clark Ridge for both 6th place overall and 2nd among the 30-39 men. Weber ran a 5:06.2, just ahead of Ridge’s 5:07.0, in the field of hundreds of runners and walkers.

photo of Bruce Weberphoto of Diane KukichTwo CRRs won their respective age groups. In 13th place overall was CRR Bruce Weber, who ran a solid 5:22.2 to win the 50-59 age group. CRR Diane Kukich won her age group (60-69) in 7:12.6. These two winners posted wonderful age-graded scores in so doing. Weber’s 91.9 was the second highest among all competitors, and Kukich scored an impressive 87.0, fourth highest overall. (Scores from 90-100 are considered world class; 80-100 is considered national class.) By comparison, Andrew Weber’s score was 84.1, and Ridge’s was 83.9.

CRR Shawn Alexander had the fourth best time among CRRs, finishing in 6:12.6.

Lawson Schultz, teenage daughter of CRR Dave Schultz and CRR Christine Schultz, won the 14-19 age group.

*In all other events, gun times are used in reporting on CreekRoadRunners.org.

Footnotes: Spectators CRR Bruce Hubbard, who wore the original race T-shirt from the inaugural Main Street Mile contested 30 years ago, and CRR Mark Deshon reminisced about that race and their respective recent physical ailments. Fusion Fitness Center picked up this unique event in 2007 and has been its organizer for the past ten years.

kukich2She loves racing, particularly when there are no men around (just kidding). CRR Diane Kukich won the 60-64 age group in the Women’s Race for the Pink Ribbon 5K in Wilmington yesterday, finishing 22nd overall out of 448 runners in 24:48. For her troubles, she won a pineapple. Here’s hoping the fruit of her labors tastes as sweet as another age-group victory.

photo of Doug Repetti at Top of Delaware Triathlon 2016Today, three Creek Road Runners fared well in the Top of Delaware multi-sport events, held at the Newark Reservoir.

In a total time of 1:20:59, CRR Doug Repetti was the top competitor in the 65-69 age group, coming in 73rd overall out of 224 in the Top of Delaware Sprint Triathlon, a stiff test in summer heat and humidity. Repetti exited the water after the 1/4-mile swim in 14:44, covered the 11.4-mile hilly bike course in 35:07 (~19.5 mph), and finished off with the 2.6-mile run (up the Reservoir approach road, a wooded loop, the Reservoir loop, down the approach road, and up the steep side of the Reservoir hill) in 28:50.

photo of Sue Barton at Top of Delaware Triathlon 2016Coming out of the water ahead of Repetti time-wise was CRR Sue Barton, who was also the top competitor in her age group (55-59), finishing 77th overall in 1:22:11. She swam the quarter mile in 12:00, did the bike leg in 38:51 (~17.6 mph), and finished with a 29:00 run leg. Barton was the 13th female overall.

photo of Rich Braun at Top of Delaware Duathlon 2016In the Sprint Duathlon, CRR Rich Braun (having eschewed the swim for an additional run leg) was the second finisher in the 55-59 age group and 14th overall out of 45 competitors. He completed the duathlon course in 1:15:19. Braun was 23rd on each of the first and third legs (1.5-mile run in 10:56; 2.6-mile run in 26:46), but blasted the bike leg in 35:10 (~19.5 mph), 8th among all duathlon competitors.

Congratulations! The three of you made us Creek Road Runners proud.

A fine way to celebrate independence!

You’re a real runner if…

acronyms like PR and DNF are verbs.

the thought of signing up for a 401K is scary.

your blood pressure is 92 over 56 and you are conscious.

you drive 100 miles to a 5K race.

you can convert kilometers to miles in your head.

your iPod has a “running” playlist.

you check out road races while on vacation.

you’ve converted your marathon medals into a wind chime.

you consider running 3 miles to be a warm up.

you know the shoe store guy better than some relatives.

you drive down the freeway and think to yourself, “Hey, my car is doing 1-minute miles.”

you know that PR stands for something other than Puerto Rico.

you use your bib numbers to wallpaper your garage.

your resting heart rate is too low to give blood.

you look forward to birthdays when your age changes to a number ending with a 0 or 5.

you consider your latest race shirt “formal wear.”

you mentally measure junk food in miles rather than calories.

you have your own name for all the local public trails.
