robinson, UD athletic director

photo of Matt RobinsonYesterday, incoming University of Delaware president Dennis Assanis named Christine Rawak as the University of Delaware’s new athletic director, replacing interim AD and CRR Matt Robinson. This allows Robinson to return to his faculty role as director of UD’s Sport Management Program and his “primary responsibility” as self-appointed CEO of the Creek Road Runners. “My thanks to…Matt Robinson for steering us through this time of change in Athletics,” Assanis said. “His deep knowledge of athletics issues and his personal leadership were invaluable to the department and to the University.”

In a locker room interview yesterday, Robinson said he was happy for the opportunity to have served as interim AD but is eager to get back to working out on Creek Road.

The 11-day-long cloud cover finally broke this morning, as several Creek Road Runners took place in either the Delaware Marathon, Delaware Half-Marathon, or 4-Person Relay at Tubman-Garrett Park in Wilmington.

photo of Andrew Weberphoto of Barret MichalecIn the 26.2-mile race, CRR Andrew Weber finished 2nd in the 35-39 age group and 15th overall (out of 345 finishers), covering the marathon distance in a stellar 3:02:47 (under 7 minutes/mile)! Weber was the third Delaware resident to finish. CRR Barret Michalec finished 10th among the 35-39s and 46th overall in 3:27:19.

The Creek Road Runners team won the Senior Team division and placed 5th overall (out of 99 teams) in the 4-person relay (four 6.55-mile legs), covering the 26.2-mile distance in 2:53:49. CRR Keith Crispin got the team off to a good start in 42:33; CRR Mark Deshon, the most senior member of the group, turned in a respectable 46:47; CRR Bill Rose ran a 43:17—pretty close to a team-average time; and CRR Bill Farquhar blasted a fast 41:09 anchor leg. The team missed out on a fourth-place overall finish by a mere 16 seconds.

The average age of the four runners was 53, brought down quite a bit by the relative youngsters Crispin and Farquhar.

kukich2On Saturday in the Delaware Marathon Running Festival 5K, CRR Diane Kukich won the 60-69 age group, coming in 15th overall (out of 115 finishers) in 23:55. This was Kukich’s best 5K time in five years.

cucciarre, English, UD, University of Delaware

photo of Christine CucciarreAssociate professor of English and CRR Christine Cucciarre is one of four recipients of this year’s Excellence in Teaching Awards at the University of Delaware. In her own words:

“I want those who were confident coming into my class to realize that there was, and is, more to learn about writing, and those who lacked confidence to know that they have the ability to think and write. And I really try to get them to see writing differently, as a process for making sense of all the new things they are learning.” See full story.

Let’s hear it for those who can both write and teach writing as well as run. Congratulations, Christine.

You’re a real runner if…

acronyms like PR and DNF are verbs.

the thought of signing up for a 401K is scary.

your blood pressure is 92 over 56 and you are conscious.

you drive 100 miles to a 5K race.

you can convert kilometers to miles in your head.

your iPod has a “running” playlist.

you check out road races while on vacation.

you’ve converted your marathon medals into a wind chime.

you consider running 3 miles to be a warm up.

you know the shoe store guy better than some relatives.

you drive down the freeway and think to yourself, “Hey, my car is doing 1-minute miles.”

you know that PR stands for something other than Puerto Rico.

you use your bib numbers to wallpaper your garage.

your resting heart rate is too low to give blood.

you look forward to birthdays when your age changes to a number ending with a 0 or 5.

you consider your latest race shirt “formal wear.”

you mentally measure junk food in miles rather than calories.

you have your own name for all the local public trails.
