photo of Dan WeileSaturday was a glorious day for racing (or pretty much any activity) in Newark. CRR Dan Weile took full advantage of the sunshine and mild temperatures during the 44th annual Turkey Trot, winning his age group (40-44) in the 10K and placing 3rd among his age-group peers in the 5K (just for a cool-down, we suppose). He was the 25th finisher (out of 185) in the 10K in 43:25 and 31st overall (out of 525 participants) in the 5K in 21:59, both solid times.

photo of Doug RepettiOther award winners in the 10K included CRR Doug Repetti, who won his age group (65-69) in 53:20, and CRR Teresa Kauffman, who placed 2nd in her age group (50-54) in 53:58.

taggartComing off heart surgery early this year, CRR Bob Taggart won his age group (75-79) in the 5K in 30:03. A 5K footnote—had CRR Mark Deshon actually registered for the race (he only did three of the 3.1 miles), he would have won his age group (60-64) by about three minutes.

A special shout-out to CRR Andy Haines (30-34), who ran the 10K in 57:46.

Three others captured age-group 3rd place finishes: CRR Dan Weile (40-44) in 1:13:34, CRR David Coker (45-49) in 1:17:01, and CRR Bob Opila (60-64) in 1:38:24.

The weather was a bit muggy for an early June day, but that didn’t seem to hinder three Creek Road Runners this past Sunday out on their home course—Creek Road—in the University of Delaware’s annual Reunion Weekend Blue Hen 5K. Anyway, it was a good day to have a last name beginning with the letter “W.”

photo of Bruce WeberLeading the way and placing 5th overall (out of 201 participants) was Dean of the Lerner Business School and CRR Bruce Weber, who won the 50-59 age group in 20:07. In 13th place was CRR Dan Weile, who placed 3rd among the 40-49s in 21:28. And Dean of Arts & Sciences and CRR George Watson, what do you know, came in 2nd in the 60-60 age group in 39:56. We suspect he was walking much of the way, though.

The 11-day-long cloud cover finally broke this morning, as several Creek Road Runners took place in either the Delaware Marathon, Delaware Half-Marathon, or 4-Person Relay at Tubman-Garrett Park in Wilmington.

photo of Andrew Weberphoto of Barret MichalecIn the 26.2-mile race, CRR Andrew Weber finished 2nd in the 35-39 age group and 15th overall (out of 345 finishers), covering the marathon distance in a stellar 3:02:47 (under 7 minutes/mile)! Weber was the third Delaware resident to finish. CRR Barret Michalec finished 10th among the 35-39s and 46th overall in 3:27:19.

photo of Dan Weilephoto of Tripp ShentonIn the half-marathon, CRR Dan Weile took 3rd in the 40-44 age group and finished 41st overall (out of 892 finishers) in a fast 1:35:04. CRR Tripp Shenton finished 2nd among his peers in the 55-59 age group and 83rd overall in 1:43:25.

The Creek Road Runners team won the Senior Team division and placed 5th overall (out of 99 teams) in the 4-person relay (four 6.55-mile legs), covering the 26.2-mile distance in 2:53:49. CRR Keith Crispin got the team off to a good start in 42:33; CRR Mark Deshon, the most senior member of the group, turned in a respectable 46:47; CRR Bill Rose ran a 43:17—pretty close to a team-average time; and CRR Bill Farquhar blasted a fast 41:09 anchor leg. The team missed out on a fourth-place overall finish by a mere 16 seconds.

The average age of the four runners was 53, brought down quite a bit by the relative youngsters Crispin and Farquhar.

kukich2On Saturday in the Delaware Marathon Running Festival 5K, CRR Diane Kukich won the 60-69 age group, coming in 15th overall (out of 115 finishers) in 23:55. This was Kukich’s best 5K time in five years.

You’re a real runner if…

acronyms like PR and DNF are verbs.

the thought of signing up for a 401K is scary.

your blood pressure is 92 over 56 and you are conscious.

you drive 100 miles to a 5K race.

you can convert kilometers to miles in your head.

your iPod has a “running” playlist.

you check out road races while on vacation.

you’ve converted your marathon medals into a wind chime.

you consider running 3 miles to be a warm up.

you know the shoe store guy better than some relatives.

you drive down the freeway and think to yourself, “Hey, my car is doing 1-minute miles.”

you know that PR stands for something other than Puerto Rico.

you use your bib numbers to wallpaper your garage.

your resting heart rate is too low to give blood.

you look forward to birthdays when your age changes to a number ending with a 0 or 5.

you consider your latest race shirt “formal wear.”

you mentally measure junk food in miles rather than calories.

you have your own name for all the local public trails.
