Here we highlight three upcoming Newark-area races happening between now and Thanksgiving.
UD Homecoming 5K
Wednesday, October 23, at 5:30 p.m.
Delaware Stadium
625 South College Avenue in Newark
Ever want to finish a race inside a stadium? Here’s a great chance to do so. This out-and-back course on the University of Delaware’s south campus, though flat, is a good challenge for all. It finishes on the football field in Delaware Stadium.
20th Anniversary Scott Mackler 5K
Sunday, November 3, at 12:30 p.m.
Temple Beth El
301 Possum Park Road in Newark
It started in 1999, right after the late CRR Scott Mackler was diagnosed with ALS. It’s probably the toughest road 5K in Delaware. Runners are rewarded, though, with a full buffet after the run. Awards for top finishers—both runners and walkers.
47th Annual Turkey Trot 10K and 5K
Saturday, November 23,
10K at 9:00 a.m., 5K at 10:30 a.m.
Norma B. Handloff Park
Barksdale Road in Newark
The oldest continuously contested race in Newark is back for another year of pre-Thanksgiving fun. Do the 10K, the 5K, or both. Great course and a great community event.
In the men’s field, CRR Ryan German won the 40-49 age group, placing 10th overall in 22:38.
In yesterday’s rain-drenched Caffé Gelato Waffle Cone Ten Miler in Newark, CRR Bruce Weber placed 11th overall out of 161 finishers, winning the 50-59 age group in 1:03:29. And he says he’s really a short-distance guy. Not far behind him was CRR Bill Rose, finishing 21st and taking third in the same age group, in 1:05:53. Race host and CRR Ryan German clocked a commendable 1:16:59, and CRR Andrew Brett ran a 1:18:22, finishing 61st and 65th, respectively.
On Saturday, CRR Andrew Weber (see photo, achieving liftoff) finished 2nd overall out of 213 runners in Habitat for Humanity of New Castle County’s Halloween Hustle 5K, crossing the line in 18:01 and winning the 30-39 age group. CRR Mark Deshon managed a 21:47 while winning the 60-69 age group and placing 14th. Photo courtesy of Habitat for Humanity.
Battling it out were CRR Ryan German and CRR Bill Rose, who each turned in a 19:55 on the clock. Rose won the 50-59 age group, while German placed 3rd among the 30-39s. German finished a whisker (six-tenths of a second) ahead of Rose; they took 6th and 7th overall, respectively, out of 266 finishers.
CRR Bob Opila captured a rare age-group victory, winning the 60-69s in 25:34. Opila was followed in that same age group by CRR Paul Amer, who took 2nd in 27:54. Good race selection, you guys!
Husband and wife CRR Rich Braun and CRR Mary Braun each took second place in the 50-59 age group with 25:08 and 28:16, respectively.
