CRR Steve Goodwin has been a fixture on Creek Road during his 30-year tenure at the University of Delaware.

Not that he’s looking for publicity or anything like that, but when Goodwin (known to many friends, colleagues, and former students as “Goody”) retired this month, it was wholly appropriate that someone document in writing a summary of the true good that he did during in his teaching/mentoring career at UD. Here’s an excerpt from that article:

Goodwin, an associate professor of health behavior and nutrition sciences, who’s retiring after 30 years, was inspired to start [a class about happiness] about halfway into his career at UD after re-reading The Art of Happiness by the Dalai Lama.

“I want my students to be better people,” Goodwin said. “Being a better person can take on a lot of different aspects of their life, and certainly being healthier is being better in some ways, but I’ve always felt it was really important to affect them in the way they interact with others and treat others with respect. If you can help people do that, they’re a better person.”

Steve, Creek Road Runners wish you happiness always, both on and off Creek Road.

On Monday, several Creek Road Runners gathered for a fun 5K down Creek Road in honor of CRR Paul Pusecker, whose time at the University of Delaware is ending this week. Several also gathered afterward for a lunch with him at the Deer Park Tavern.

Joining Paul Pusecker (in green shirt) for his farewell 5K were Vic Kaliakin, Mark Deshon, Bill Rose, Jeff Chase, Jordan Deshon, Rick Andrews, Julie Brewer, Steve Goodwin, Flora Poindexter, Avron Abraham, and Bruce Weber.

Before coming to UD, Pusecker retired from the U.S. Army as a lieutenant colonel after more than 20 years of active duty service.

Pusecker has been a “regular” runner out on Creek Road for the 17 years he’s been on campus, along with small group of UD running companions who had popularized the “Lower Slower” and “Chateau Country” runs that were annual staples back in the day. More recently, he’s taken up bicycling to augment his fitness regimen. He will be missed out on Creek Road.

Organizer and CRR Mark Deshon is having some cause for concern that the current course is too difficult to follow, something he’d never really given much credence to before today. What with many opting to cut the loop course short for one reason or another and several “newbies” participating each year, we may need to come up with a fool-proof system for ensuring the integrity of the “Wring Out the Old, Ring in the New” trail run. The purpose was achieved, however—that is, to have fun!

Sporting the course map shirts, CRR Mike Shay (left) listens as Deshon gives some pre-event tips—like don’t get lost.

CRR Steve Goodwin sits among Delaware supporters at a USA women’s Olympic team basketball game.

goodwinFirst-person accounts are essential, so CRR Steve Goodwin provides a glimpse of his experiences so far at the Olympic Games in Rio.

“I have gotten a few runs in along the beach in Mangaratiba and Sao Paulo. There is an incredibly steep and long hill; I am going to try to conquer it tomorrow. I did about 80%. It is easily the steepest hill I have ever run and it is about 1/5 of a mile. Brutal! Charlie [CRR Charlie Riordan] may not even like this one!

“We have also played soccer a number of times, including on Copacabana Beach. It was a real international affair with players from Brazil, USA, Mexico, and Finland. Enjoying the Games. Going to beach volleyball tomorrow. Have already seen the Women’s basketball (saw USA and Elena [Delle Donne]), men’s soccer, and team handball. We [will be] going to track and field, badminton, and the women’s soccer semis. Tickets are inexpensive and readily available.”

You’re a real runner if…

acronyms like PR and DNF are verbs.

the thought of signing up for a 401K is scary.

your blood pressure is 92 over 56 and you are conscious.

you drive 100 miles to a 5K race.

you can convert kilometers to miles in your head.

your iPod has a “running” playlist.

you check out road races while on vacation.

you’ve converted your marathon medals into a wind chime.

you consider running 3 miles to be a warm up.

you know the shoe store guy better than some relatives.

you drive down the freeway and think to yourself, “Hey, my car is doing 1-minute miles.”

you know that PR stands for something other than Puerto Rico.

you use your bib numbers to wallpaper your garage.

your resting heart rate is too low to give blood.

you look forward to birthdays when your age changes to a number ending with a 0 or 5.

you consider your latest race shirt “formal wear.”

you mentally measure junk food in miles rather than calories.

you have your own name for all the local public trails.
