The 11-day-long cloud cover finally broke this morning, as several Creek Road Runners took place in either the Delaware Marathon, Delaware Half-Marathon, or 4-Person Relay at Tubman-Garrett Park in Wilmington.

Weber was the third Delaware resident to finish. CRR Barret Michalec finished 10th among the 35-39s and 46th overall in 3:27:19.

The Creek Road Runners team won the Senior Team division and placed 5th overall (out of 99 teams) in the 4-person relay (four 6.55-mile legs), covering the 26.2-mile distance in 2:53:49. CRR Keith Crispin got the team off to a good start in 42:33; CRR Mark Deshon, the most senior member of the group, turned in a respectable 46:47; CRR Bill Rose ran a 43:17—pretty close to a team-average time; and CRR Bill Farquhar blasted a fast 41:09 anchor leg. The team missed out on a fourth-place overall finish by a mere 16 seconds.

The average age of the four runners was 53, brought down quite a bit by the relative youngsters Crispin and Farquhar.

kukich2On Saturday in the Delaware Marathon Running Festival 5K, CRR Diane Kukich won the 60-69 age group, coming in 15th overall (out of 115 finishers) in 23:55. This was Kukich’s best 5K time in five years.

photo of Tom AppleHaving seen the previous post, CRR Tom Apple, one of two Creek Road Runners on the island of Oahu, sent word from Hawai‘i. He says, “We had the polar vortex here too; it was 61 the other morning— BRRR!” Thanks for the “bad” weather update.

Just before Christmas, Tom ran what he called a “tepid” 21:01 in the 5K Jingle Rock Run in Honolulu, winning the 60-64 age group by more than four minutes and finishing 45th overall out of 3,614 participants. Not bad for an old man.

When Tom left Newark, he was supposed to have come back for two weeks every January to get in shape, much like he did the other way around while he was here. Guess life in the Pacific is too good to leave.

photo of Bruce Weber running the Big Day 5KRunning on his “home course” in Wilmington, CRR Bruce Weber placed 6th overall in the Big Day 5K and 2nd in the 50-59 age group. The former Harvard track star’s time was a sparkling 19:08 on the out-to-Rockford-Park-and-back course.

Bruce enjoyed the run but wished his two kids had been there to cheer him on. “The race went by my house,” he said, “but neither of my two teenagers could see fit to come out onto the front lawn and cheer on old dad. My wife Teri and dog were there to support me, though.”

Thanks to Teri (and man’s best friend) for the photo.

Seconds, anyone?

New Year’s Day has come and gone, and some even felt the necessity to fit in an initial race. In the local Hangover Helper 5K, a couple age-group awards were won by Creek Road Runners.

photo of Andrew Weberphoto of Christine SchultzCRR Andrew Weber came in second in the 30-39 age group with a 19:11, finishing 6th overall out of 112 participants. CRR Christine Schultz also came in second in her age group (40-49) with a 26:12 and finished 21st overall.

photo of Dave SchultzChristine’s husband, CRR Dave Schultz, took a third in the 50-59s in 24:08 and was 12th overall. For the Schultzes, this was a good showing, a day after they had run in the “Wring Out the Old, Ring in the New.” Their daughter, Lawson, won the 20-and-unders at age 14 with a 26:57. Of course, not having run the previous day, she was fresh.

You’re a real runner if…

acronyms like PR and DNF are verbs.

the thought of signing up for a 401K is scary.

your blood pressure is 92 over 56 and you are conscious.

you drive 100 miles to a 5K race.

you can convert kilometers to miles in your head.

your iPod has a “running” playlist.

you check out road races while on vacation.

you’ve converted your marathon medals into a wind chime.

you consider running 3 miles to be a warm up.

you know the shoe store guy better than some relatives.

you drive down the freeway and think to yourself, “Hey, my car is doing 1-minute miles.”

you know that PR stands for something other than Puerto Rico.

you use your bib numbers to wallpaper your garage.

your resting heart rate is too low to give blood.

you look forward to birthdays when your age changes to a number ending with a 0 or 5.

you consider your latest race shirt “formal wear.”

you mentally measure junk food in miles rather than calories.

you have your own name for all the local public trails.
