The granddaddy of Newark road racing, the annual Turkey Trot 10K and 5K were contested on Saturday. There were five award winners among the Creek Road Runners.

photo of Christina Parsonsphoto of Steve TagueIn the 10K, CRR Christina Parsons won the 50-54 age group, finishing 40th overall out of 178 runners in 48:36. Parsons margin of victory in her age group was more than seven minutes! CRR Steve Tague, who finished 24th overall, ran a solid 44:37 and took second in the 55-59 age group.

photo of April AndersonIn the 5K, the honors go to two 70-and-over seniors, who each won this ever-thinning division. CRR Doug Ridge won in 28:28, and CRR April Anderson won in 42:12 (no doubt walking much of it).

photo of Doug RepettiThe fastest time among CRRs in the 5K belonged to CRR Doug Repetti, who ran a 27:05, taking second place among the 65-69s.

A well-deserved Thanksgiving meal goes to you five.

10K, deshon, Maine Lobster Festival

photo of Mark Deshon with age-group winning plaqueThe race itself wasn’t special, even though it takes place each year in his birth city in association with Maine’s largest seafood festival, but it was the pursuit of an interesting racing trifecta that focused the attention of CRR Mark Deshon this summer.

After last Sunday’s race, Deshon, who first took on Rockland’s Lobster Festival 10K in 1997 during its silver anniversary year, has now competed in the race three times, winning his age group each time—in different 10-year age groups.

Despite what he viewed as a sub-par race performance (“I was on [his target] pace but completely blew up after four miles”), Deshon managed to finish 19th this year in 45:34, winning the 60-69 age group’s first-place plaque. He now has his third such winning plaque, having finished 6th overall in 1997 at age 41 in 37:47 and 21st overall five years ago at age 57 in 43:56.

Inevitably (like “death and taxes”), his times have slowed, but Deshon happily relishes this special—in a quirky sense—racing achievement, 21 years in the making.

10K, rose, trail creek series

photo of Bill RoseCongratulations to 59-year-old CRR Bill Rose, who won the 2018 Trail Creek Series, as he scored the most cumulative points (100) of any male participant in the series of five off-road 10K races.

In series scoring, 30 points were awarded for a first-place finish, 29 points for 2nd, 28 points for 3rd, etc. Rose scored 10, 16, 24, 25, and 25 points in the five races, respectively, which took place between March 4 and June 23. The second-place finisher earned a total of 89 points. Rose received a $200 prize for winning the series.

Held on measured cross-country courses in both Pennsylvania and Delaware, races in the 10K series include the Brandywine Red Clay Alliance, Beau Biden Foundation Memorial Trail Run, Enoch Lee Race to Save the World, The Land Conservancy Stateline Woods Run for Conservation, and Chasin’ for Chalfin.

There were several very different races this past weekend, at which some of our contingent participated.

photo of Bill Rosephoto of Theresa CannonIn the Beau Biden Foundation 10K cross-country race, there were two standouts. CRR Bill Rose finished 16th overall out of 231 finishers in 50:56. This was good enough to win the 50-59 age group. CRR Theresa Cannon took a third in the same age group, finishing in 1:06:58. Ms. Cannon, who has run the Boston Marathon 13 times, was recently inducted into the Pike Creek Valley Running Club’s Hall of Fame.

photo of Andrew WeberIn the Beau Biden 5K, CRR Andrew Weber finished 2nd overall our of 333 runners, winning his age group (30-39) in 20:49.

In Newark’s Get Lucky 5K, it was CRR Andrew Weber who finished 5th overall out of 155 runners and took 2nd among the 30-39s in 18:29. CRR Diane Kukich finished 29th overall, winning the 60-69 age group in 24:48. This time age graded to a 80.9, the highest such score of any of the participants.

In the state’s oldest race, the 55th running of the Caesar Rodney Half Marathon, CRR Kevin McCooey finished in 2:07:53 (2:07:05 chip).

Well done, all!

Once again this year, the runners at the Mayor’s Icicle Ten Miler in Wilmington got a 3.8-mile discount due to cold, icy conditions. Go figure. The race organizers again cut the course down last weekend to a 10K. Along with the Icicle race, there was also a Snowball 5K.

photo of Bruce Weberphoto of Steve TaguePlacing 19th overall out of 233 finishers was CRR Bruce Weber, who won the 55-59 age group and turned in a 41:00 10K time, remarkable given the super-cold temperatures. Placing third in that same age group was CRR Steve Tague, who ran a 46:42. Also noteworthy is that CRR Ryan German ran a 49:38.

photo of Holly Scottphoto of Theresa CannonOn the distaff side, Dover resident and CRR Holly Scott placed third among the 55-59s in 50:57.

In the Mayor’s Snowball 5K, CRR Theresa Kauffman won the 50-59s in 27:05, and she did do the second 5K loop as a “cool down” (literally).

You’re a real runner if…

acronyms like PR and DNF are verbs.

the thought of signing up for a 401K is scary.

your blood pressure is 92 over 56 and you are conscious.

you drive 100 miles to a 5K race.

you can convert kilometers to miles in your head.

your iPod has a “running” playlist.

you check out road races while on vacation.

you’ve converted your marathon medals into a wind chime.

you consider running 3 miles to be a warm up.

you know the shoe store guy better than some relatives.

you drive down the freeway and think to yourself, “Hey, my car is doing 1-minute miles.”

you know that PR stands for something other than Puerto Rico.

you use your bib numbers to wallpaper your garage.

your resting heart rate is too low to give blood.

you look forward to birthdays when your age changes to a number ending with a 0 or 5.

you consider your latest race shirt “formal wear.”

you mentally measure junk food in miles rather than calories.

you have your own name for all the local public trails.
