video screenshot of Diane Kukich from Wilmington News JournalWhen CRR Diane Kukich commits to something, she seriously commits. For much of her adult life she has kept fit by working out, by exercising in one form or another—either walking, running, swimming, or biking. Now she’s approaching an impressive, and somewhat unimaginable, milestone. Kukich is closing in on 10,000 consecutive days of exercise—that’s about 27 years and 4 months, day in and day out. See video / read full story (including quotes from CRR Steve Goodwin and an inspirational nod to CRR Cole Galloway).

Kukich still holds the Delaware state resident record for the 50-54 age group at the 20K distance (set in 2002 – see state records held by Creek Road Runners).

You go, girl!

CRR Steve Goodwin sits among Delaware supporters at a USA women’s Olympic team basketball game.

goodwinFirst-person accounts are essential, so CRR Steve Goodwin provides a glimpse of his experiences so far at the Olympic Games in Rio.

“I have gotten a few runs in along the beach in Mangaratiba and Sao Paulo. There is an incredibly steep and long hill; I am going to try to conquer it tomorrow. I did about 80%. It is easily the steepest hill I have ever run and it is about 1/5 of a mile. Brutal! Charlie [CRR Charlie Riordan] may not even like this one!

“We have also played soccer a number of times, including on Copacabana Beach. It was a real international affair with players from Brazil, USA, Mexico, and Finland. Enjoying the Games. Going to beach volleyball tomorrow. Have already seen the Women’s basketball (saw USA and Elena [Delle Donne]), men’s soccer, and team handball. We [will be] going to track and field, badminton, and the women’s soccer semis. Tickets are inexpensive and readily available.”

Creek Road, deshon, photos, rose, White Clay Creek, winter

photo of Mark Deshon and Bill RoseTwo Creek Road Runners had separate winter adventures with a camera recently.

CRR Mark Deshon picked an extremely cold weekend to run in the Adirondacks this past Saturday, while CRR Bill Rose stayed close to home and captured some nice wintry shots of White Clay Creek from scenic venues along Creek Road on a relatively balmy (ha, ha) Monday. Mark’s photos include a shot of the outdoor thermometer at -17°F as he started out (the wind chill was quite a bit lower) and a close-up showing his frozen eyebrows post-run. Click on photos below for a larger view.

CRR Mark Deshon enjoys the end of another completed “Wring Out the Old, Ring in the New.”

The powerful El Niño that is in play this winter in the U.S. made this—the 17th annual “Wring Out the Old, Ring in the New”—trail run at Fair Hill Natural Resources Management Area one of the most comfortable, if not the most, in the history of the event, weather-wise. Despite two days of rain leading up to today, the course was not nearly as muddy as it could have been.

For the third consecutive year, the event attendance record was broken. With the addition of 11 “newbies,” a record 25 people (and one eager canine) came out to run/jog/walk all or part of the loop course.

photo of Bill FarquharCRR Bill Farquhar writes in the News Journal about new sodium labeling—“salt bombs”—restaurants are using. Farquhar is Professor and Chair in the Department of Kinesiology and Applied Physiology at the University of Delaware. He studies the role of diet and exercise on human health. In addition to his academic prowess, Farquhar is a serious runner. Now that his training is back on track, you can be sure he’s watching his own salt intake too.

Read News Journal article. (CRR Dave Edwards, Farquhar’s colleague, is also mentioned in the article.)

Recently, CRR Skip White, who was on sabbatical this fall from his day job as a professor in the Department of Accounting at the University of Delaware, did some fishing with recent retiree CRR John Schuster. Sure, it was a nice catch, but the real story here is how nice and new White’s shirt looks. Displaying the group T-shirt is always a good look, whether the fish is just big or “this big.”

photo of Cole GallowayCRR Cole Galloway and his Go Baby Go mobility program at the University of Delaware was injected with some new funding from the organization Kids with Confidence. His research will ultimately provide information to improve the lives of children with many kinds of mobility and learning issues, but those with Down syndrome are the focus of the initial Go Baby Go research. Galloway is professor of physical therapy in the College of Health Sciences.

You’re a real runner if…

acronyms like PR and DNF are verbs.

the thought of signing up for a 401K is scary.

your blood pressure is 92 over 56 and you are conscious.

you drive 100 miles to a 5K race.

you can convert kilometers to miles in your head.

your iPod has a “running” playlist.

you check out road races while on vacation.

you’ve converted your marathon medals into a wind chime.

you consider running 3 miles to be a warm up.

you know the shoe store guy better than some relatives.

you drive down the freeway and think to yourself, “Hey, my car is doing 1-minute miles.”

you know that PR stands for something other than Puerto Rico.

you use your bib numbers to wallpaper your garage.

your resting heart rate is too low to give blood.

you look forward to birthdays when your age changes to a number ending with a 0 or 5.

you consider your latest race shirt “formal wear.”

you mentally measure junk food in miles rather than calories.

you have your own name for all the local public trails.
