At the PNC Bank Run for MS on Thanksgiving Day, there were a few standout performances by Creek Road Runners.

photo of Dan SimmonsCRR Dan Simmons could’t quite pull off his second double win in six days. However, he did win his age group (65-69) in the 10K with a 44:17. Simmons took second in his age group in the 5K by running a 22:41. Time for a well-earned rest…. Oh, yeah, there’s a cross-country race on Saturday. Simmons will undoubtedly be out there competing once again.

CRR Ann Jornlin, who converted to cycling as her primary sport several years ago and biked across the country this past summer, runs this race annually in what has become a family tradition. She won the 5K in the 60-64 age group with a 26:24. Ever-steady CRR Theresa Cannon-Kauffman won the 50-54 age group in the 10K with a 50:17.

A brave few Creek Road Runners came out to celebrate the 40th running of Newark’s Turkey Trot, in both 10K and 5K options.

It was a windy morning, but that didn’t deter CRR Dan Simmons (65-69) from picking up another age-group first in the 10K by running a 43:14, crossing the line 32nd out of more than 300 participants. CRR Mark Deshon ran a solid 42:29 and was the 25th finisher to cross the line. He was actually the first finisher in his age group (55-59) but was awarded the 2nd-place trophy because the awards were determined by chip times (see editor’s note below). CRR Theresa Cannon won her age group (50-54) in 50:08.

In the 5K, 20-year-old CRR Jordan Deshon ran a PR of 18:22 and placed 4th overall, taking 1st in the 19-24 age group because the top three finishers each received separate awards. CRR Dan Simmons couldn’t get enough Turkey Trot and won his age group in the 5K as well with a 22:39.  On the female side, CRR Mary Braun came away with an age-group (50-54) 2nd place with a time of 27:36.

Editor’s note: Call it “old school,” but results posted on the Creek Road Runners site are based on gun times, not chip times.

photo of Jay CoughenourSeveral good times were turned in during the Philadelphia Marathon weekend races this past weekend.  Among those were four notable Creek Road Runners.

photo of Keith CrispinCRR Jay Coughenour came in 5th out of 430 in his age group (45-49) in Sunday’s Philadelphia Half Marathon in a blazing fast 1:20:07. He was 72nd overall out of 12,467 finishers! In the same age group, CRR Keith Crispin posted a very good 1:29:02.

photo of Dan SimmonsCRR Dan Simmons continued his dominance among the region’s 65-69 men with a win, placing 1st out of 58 runners, in 1:39:16.

photo of Theresa KauffmanIn the Rothman 8K, contested on Saturday, CRR Theresa Kauffman ran a 38:44, placing her 6th out of the 72 runners in the 50-54 age group. She finished 256th overall out of 1,609 finishers and 73rd among the women.

USA Duathlon/Triathlon 2013 National Championship graphicCRR Dan Simmons is not one to toot his own horn, so someone has to do it for him. On October 26th, Simmons competed in the USA National Duathlon Championship in Tucson, Ariz., placing 4th among the 65-69 men and 233rd out of the 383 finishers. He was one of just three competitors from Delaware.

Though he admits he wish he had done better in the 5K run, 35K bike, 5K run event (rather than deal with the expensive logistics of shipping his own bicycle out west, he rented a bicycle that didn’t fit him very well), Simmons posted a time of 2:00:12 (splits of 21:45, 1:10:39, and 25:02 for the stages plus 2:36 of transition time). This placed him behind only age-group adversaries from Brookfield, Wis., Blue Bell, Pa., and El Sobrante, Calif.

This finish earned Simmons an invitation to the World Duathlon Championship in Pontevedra, Spain, in May. He hasn’t decided yet if he’ll go or not. It’s a long transatlantic swim and his least favorite of the multi-sport “legs.”

your blood pressure is 92 over 56 and you are conscious.

you drive 100 miles to a 5K race.

you can convert kilometers to miles in your head.

your iPod has a “running” playlist.

you check out road races while on vacation.

you’ve converted your marathon medals into a wind chime.

you consider running 3 miles to be a warm up.

you know the shoe store guy better than some relatives.

you drive down the freeway and think to yourself, “Hey, my car is doing 1-minute miles.”

you know that PR stands for something other than Puerto Rico.

you use your bib numbers to wallpaper your garage.

your resting heart rate is too low to give blood.

you look forward to birthdays when your age changes to a number ending with a 0 or 5.

you consider your latest race shirt “formal wear.”

you mentally measure junk food in miles rather than calories.

you have your own name for all the local public trails.
