Nearing year’s end, here are a couple notes from headquarters.

CO-FOUNDER TURNS SEVENTY-FIVE

photo of Bob Bennett at the Arc Corner MonumentCreek Road Runners co-founder CRR Bob Bennett turned 75 on Sunday, Dec. 18. Several old friends (all Creek Road Runners themselves) gathered at a celebratory lunch for him this week. Though he isn’t getting out to run on Creek Road much anymore, he does take advantage of the James F. Hall Trail and an occasional hike with the Wilmington Trail Club. Pictured here is Bennett at the Arc Corner Monument in White Clay Creek State Park on a recent walk with CRR Mark Deshon.

SPOTTED RECENTLY ON CREEK ROAD

photo of Mark Deshon and David JamesCRR Mark Deshon was getting ready for a workout recently, having just parked at the foot of Wedgewood Road. He had just stepped out of his car when, coming toward him on Creek Road, he spotted CRR David James. James (pictured, right), who still holds state records in the 10K and 10-mile distances for the 55-59 age group, had been off the racing circuit for the past several years, having suffered from severe bouts of vertigo, but is back out on Creek Road again. Deshon ran with him for a while that day, catching up with an old friend and one-time racing nemesis.

TIME AGAIN TO WRING OUT THE OLD

The annual Creek Road Runners “Wring Out the Old, Ring in the New” trail run will take place on Dec. 31.

CRR Mark Deshon enjoys the end of another completed “Wring Out the Old, Ring in the New.”

The powerful El Niño that is in play this winter in the U.S. made this—the 17th annual “Wring Out the Old, Ring in the New”—trail run at Fair Hill Natural Resources Management Area one of the most comfortable, if not the most, in the history of the event, weather-wise. Despite two days of rain leading up to today, the course was not nearly as muddy as it could have been.

For the third consecutive year, the event attendance record was broken. With the addition of 11 “newbies,” a record 25 people (and one eager canine) came out to run/jog/walk all or part of the loop course.

Despite below-freezing temperatures, 24 hearty souls and one ready-for-a-long-run canine came out to participate in the 16th annual “Wring Out the Old, Ring in the New” trail run at the Fair Hill Natural Resource Management Area’s Black Bridge Road parking lot on the last day of 2014.

This year was highlighted by, count ’em, 11 women—coming out in force to share this unique New Year’s Eve day experience for themselves—and a special appearance by self-appointed CEO CRR Matt Robinson. Special thanks to photographer Doug Baker, husband of CRR Diane Kukich, for taking so many good photos (sorry we only had room for a few).

group of 21 at the start of the runWow! Twenty-one participants… no, wait, 21 and a half (for explanation, see the full story). The previous high number was 13 back in 2010.

It was a cold but beautiful day at Fair Hill Natural Resources Management Area. There were a few glitches along the way (like wrong turns and wrong parking lots), plus a surprise visit from the park ranger after the run. We included her in the holiday cheer, though.

Thanks to all who came out, especially the several first-timers and a few non–Creek Road Runners. All of you made it a fun time and a great way to “Wring Out the Old, Ring in the New.”

graphic of course map and T-shirt artThree weeks from today at 9 a.m., Creek Road Runners will gather for the 15th Annual “Wring Out the Old, Ring in the New” trail run at Fair Hill Natural Resources Management Area’s Black Bridge Road parking lot (off of Appleton Road, north of Md. Rt. 273).

Organizer CRR Mark Deshon is expecting a big turnout this year, with plenty of new faces. This should be a lot of fun. Note that it is an “all weather” event. Come prepared to run (not race) and have a good time with others. Please be punctual so that you are there for the pre-run photo.

You’re a real runner if…

acronyms like PR and DNF are verbs.

the thought of signing up for a 401K is scary.

your blood pressure is 92 over 56 and you are conscious.

you drive 100 miles to a 5K race.

you can convert kilometers to miles in your head.

your iPod has a “running” playlist.

you check out road races while on vacation.

you’ve converted your marathon medals into a wind chime.

you consider running 3 miles to be a warm up.

you know the shoe store guy better than some relatives.

you drive down the freeway and think to yourself, “Hey, my car is doing 1-minute miles.”

you know that PR stands for something other than Puerto Rico.

you use your bib numbers to wallpaper your garage.

your resting heart rate is too low to give blood.

you look forward to birthdays when your age changes to a number ending with a 0 or 5.

you consider your latest race shirt “formal wear.”

you mentally measure junk food in miles rather than calories.

you have your own name for all the local public trails.
