It was a picture-perfect day for a race on Creek Road, and the Creek Road Runners did not disappoint, taking home three 1st place, three 2nd place, and one 3rd place among the age-group awards handed out on Sunday morning at the Blue Hen 5K.

photo of Bill RoseLeading the way and crossing the line 4th overall out of 256 finishers was CRR Bill Rose. Rose weaved his way through many a runner over the course to finish where he did, having run an even 20:00. Creek Road Runners owned the 50-59 age group; Rose won and was joined by 2nd place finisher CRR Mark Deshon (21:08) and 3rd place finisher CRR Cole Galloway (21:12), whose son, Nathan, came in second overall with a tidy 18:23.

Passing several runners along the way, CRR Dan Weile turned in a good performance and earned a 2nd place among the 40-49s in 20:55. Deshon just couldn’t stay in contact with him for the second half of the race.

kukich2photo of Julie BrewerDespite her admission that the hill at the end “beat [her] up,” CRR Diane Kukich won the 60-69 age group in a time of 25:03. Not to be outdone by her own peers, CRR Julie Brewer was the other female age-group (50-59) winner on the day in 27:33.

CRR John Bishop also deserves a nod for his 2nd place finish among the 70-and-overs in 43:11, even though he’d probably be the first to admit that there were very few in that age group.

Creek Road Runners always show up for and show well in the Delaware Marathon relay. Last weekend’s race was no exception. Led by CRR Bill Rose, who ran a blazing fast 43:46 initial 6.55-mile leg, the 2015 edition of the Creek Road Runners team finished 8th overall out of 132 teams in the Refuel with Chocolate Milk 4 Person Relay. This was also good for a coed senior division win. The team’s total time was 3:11:47.

Leg two was carried by CRR Christina Parsons (52:48), who three weeks earlier had run a PR in the Boston Marathon. A last-minute substitute for an injured CRR Mark Deshon, triathlete and CRR Steve Tague turned in a 49:16. Back in racing form again, CRR Bill Farquhar brought it all home with a strong 45:55.

Congratulations to all!

CRR Shawn Alexander completed the 10-mile course in 1:18:14. Newark Deputy City Manager and CRR Andy Haines shaved some time off his previous best with a PR in 1:30:22. CRR Beverly Jackey, recipient of the new-runner shirt giveaway at the 2014 “Wring Out the Old, Ring in the New,” finished in a commendable 1:33:12. Triathlete and CRR Sue Barton came in at 1:36:14. Well done, all of you.

kukich2CRR Diane Kukich won her age division (60-64) this past weekend in the Shamrock 8K in Virginia Beach, Va. Her time of 40:34 (38:44 chip time) was tops among 136 of her age-group peers. Averaging 7:48 per mile, Kukich placed in the top 100 overall out of more than 5,500 women. This was one of three races, which also included the Yuengling Marathon and Anthem Half Marathon. Congratulations!

You’re a real runner if…

acronyms like PR and DNF are verbs.

the thought of signing up for a 401K is scary.

your blood pressure is 92 over 56 and you are conscious.

you drive 100 miles to a 5K race.

you can convert kilometers to miles in your head.

your iPod has a “running” playlist.

you check out road races while on vacation.

you’ve converted your marathon medals into a wind chime.

you consider running 3 miles to be a warm up.

you know the shoe store guy better than some relatives.

you drive down the freeway and think to yourself, “Hey, my car is doing 1-minute miles.”

you know that PR stands for something other than Puerto Rico.

you use your bib numbers to wallpaper your garage.

your resting heart rate is too low to give blood.

you look forward to birthdays when your age changes to a number ending with a 0 or 5.

you consider your latest race shirt “formal wear.”

you mentally measure junk food in miles rather than calories.

you have your own name for all the local public trails.
