Newark Turkey Trot 10K/5K cartoonNext Saturday, Nov. 18, the Newark community will gather, pre-holiday eating, to run in the 45th Annual Turkey Trot 10K and 5K races on Barksdale Road. The 10K will start at 9:00 and the 5K at 10:30.

This classic road race provides variety in both its one-loop and two-loop choices, with mild (but sufficiently challenging) hills and but a few turns.

Register now online and save (before Nov. 15 at noon). Want to run both races? Save even more. Day-of registration begins at 8:00.

Three recent October local races saw a few standout performances by Creek Road Runners.

And he says he’s really a short-distance guy. Not far behind him was CRR Bill Rose, finishing 21st and taking third in the same age group, in 1:05:53. Race host and CRR Ryan German clocked a commendable 1:16:59, and CRR Andrew Brett ran a 1:18:22, finishing 61st and 65th, respectively.

CRR Mark Deshon managed a 21:47 while winning the 60-69 age group and placing 14th. Photo courtesy of Habitat for Humanity.

On Oct. 22 in the annual Scott Mackler 5K, the toughest road 5K in Delaware, CRR Ryan German placed 2nd among the 30-39s and 15th overall out of 182 finishers in a very respectable 23:59.

CRR Bruce Weber (shown at right) ran the SIBOS 5K (a 6 a.m. start) in Toronto before attending a business conference on October 18. His 19:12 is a good race time for the 56-year-old.

Well done, both of you!

10 miler, 5K, Caffé Gelato, waffle cone

Caffé Gelato waffle cone logoThe annual Caffé Gelato Waffle Cone 10 Miler and 5K run/walk (new this year) will be held on Sunday, Oct. 29, at 9 a.m. The 10 Miler is the quintessential Creek Road run, as the course takes you out Creek Road along White Clay Creek all the way up into Pennsylvania’s White Clay Preserve before reversing course and heading back to Newark. The event includes a buffet brunch afterward.

You can register online for the ten miler at a pre-registration cost of $40 (by noon on Thursday, Oct. 26) or day-of cost of $50, but Caffé Gelato owner and CRR Ryan German is offering a special price of $20 to all official Creek Road Runners. Simply email Ryan and say “I’m a Creek Road Runner and I want to register for the event.” Then bring $20 with you to the registration table during the day of the event and indicate when you register that you are an official “Creek Road Runner.”

Creek Road Runners thank Ryan for this generous offer!

You’re a real runner if…

acronyms like PR and DNF are verbs.

the thought of signing up for a 401K is scary.

your blood pressure is 92 over 56 and you are conscious.

you drive 100 miles to a 5K race.

you can convert kilometers to miles in your head.

your iPod has a “running” playlist.

you check out road races while on vacation.

you’ve converted your marathon medals into a wind chime.

you consider running 3 miles to be a warm up.

you know the shoe store guy better than some relatives.

you drive down the freeway and think to yourself, “Hey, my car is doing 1-minute miles.”

you know that PR stands for something other than Puerto Rico.

you use your bib numbers to wallpaper your garage.

your resting heart rate is too low to give blood.

you look forward to birthdays when your age changes to a number ending with a 0 or 5.

you consider your latest race shirt “formal wear.”

you mentally measure junk food in miles rather than calories.

you have your own name for all the local public trails.
