CRR Bob Bennett promos the course with the 10th Anniversary t-shirt.

New Year’s Eve day is less than three weeks away. That means it’s time to start planning for the 19th annual “Wring Out the Old, Ring in the New” trail run, to take place at 12 noon on Sunday, Dec. 31, at Fair Hill Natural Resources Management Area, just over the state line in Maryland.

We’d kind of like to know ahead of time who will be participating this year, to help us better plan for the numbers. No, there won’t be a giveaway T-shirt this year, but we will do some kind of random giveaway to a lucky first-timer. Not familiar with the run? Check it out!

New start time this year: 12 noon! (So, don’t show up at 9 a.m., unless you want to wait three hours out in the cold or warm up with a rather quick marathon.) Woo-hoo! Should be warmer by noon.

So, shoot Mark Deshon an email to let him know you’re interested in the run, and he’ll be in touch.

Organizer and CRR Mark Deshon is having some cause for concern that the current course is too difficult to follow, something he’d never really given much credence to before today. What with many opting to cut the loop course short for one reason or another and several “newbies” participating each year, we may need to come up with a fool-proof system for ensuring the integrity of the “Wring Out the Old, Ring in the New” trail run. The purpose was achieved, however—that is, to have fun!

Sporting the course map shirts, CRR Mike Shay (left) listens as Deshon gives some pre-event tips—like don’t get lost.

CRR Mark Deshon enjoys the end of another completed “Wring Out the Old, Ring in the New.”

The powerful El Niño that is in play this winter in the U.S. made this—the 17th annual “Wring Out the Old, Ring in the New”—trail run at Fair Hill Natural Resources Management Area one of the most comfortable, if not the most, in the history of the event, weather-wise. Despite two days of rain leading up to today, the course was not nearly as muddy as it could have been.

For the third consecutive year, the event attendance record was broken. With the addition of 11 “newbies,” a record 25 people (and one eager canine) came out to run/jog/walk all or part of the loop course.

Despite below-freezing temperatures, 24 hearty souls and one ready-for-a-long-run canine came out to participate in the 16th annual “Wring Out the Old, Ring in the New” trail run at the Fair Hill Natural Resource Management Area’s Black Bridge Road parking lot on the last day of 2014.

This year was highlighted by, count ’em, 11 women—coming out in force to share this unique New Year’s Eve day experience for themselves—and a special appearance by self-appointed CEO CRR Matt Robinson. Special thanks to photographer Doug Baker, husband of CRR Diane Kukich, for taking so many good photos (sorry we only had room for a few).

You’re a real runner if…

acronyms like PR and DNF are verbs.

the thought of signing up for a 401K is scary.

your blood pressure is 92 over 56 and you are conscious.

you drive 100 miles to a 5K race.

you can convert kilometers to miles in your head.

your iPod has a “running” playlist.

you check out road races while on vacation.

you’ve converted your marathon medals into a wind chime.

you consider running 3 miles to be a warm up.

you know the shoe store guy better than some relatives.

you drive down the freeway and think to yourself, “Hey, my car is doing 1-minute miles.”

you know that PR stands for something other than Puerto Rico.

you use your bib numbers to wallpaper your garage.

your resting heart rate is too low to give blood.

you look forward to birthdays when your age changes to a number ending with a 0 or 5.

you consider your latest race shirt “formal wear.”

you mentally measure junk food in miles rather than calories.

you have your own name for all the local public trails.
