Local triathlete and CRR Steve Tague ventured to the D.C. area and The Big Apple to compete in triathlon events this fall.

In the Reston Triathlon on September 10, Tague bested 22 other competitors in his 60-64 age group in this olympic-distances event (1.5km swim, 40km bike, 10km run). He came in 14th overall out of 282 finishers.

Tague’s swim time was 28:06 (2nd among the 60-64s), his 1:11:00 bike (at 21 mph) was best among his age-group peers, and his 10km run time was 53:00 (3rd among the 60-64s). Adding 2:49 for the two transitions, his total time for the event was 2:34:54.

The New York City Triathlon event on October 1 was changed to a run–bike–run event due to massive flooding in the city. The swim was ditched for an opening mile run, which was followed by the 40km bike and 10km run. Tague finished an impressive 132nd out of 1,048 competitors and 2nd out of 41 finishers in the 60-64 age group.

A good swimmer, Tague reported that he would have won his age group in a traditional triathlon. “The guy that beat me I have [beaten] before, as I take a big chunk out of him in the swim (and a little in the bike) that he can’t quite make up in the run.”

Tague’s opened with a 7:50 mile, biked an age-group best 1:12:38 (20.5 mph), and finished with a 50:26 10km run (8:07/mile). Adding transition times totaling 4:01, his overall time was 2:14:53.

Not too shabby for a 64 year old!

OK, so headlines can be deceiving.

Even so, on August 6th Newark’s CRR Steve Tague placed 15th among his 158 age-group (60-64) competitors in the Olympic-distance triathlon at the U.S. Triathlon Nationals in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. That’s top ten percent!

The second of four Delaware finishers, Tague completed the .75K-swim, 40K-bike, 10K-run event in 2:23:43, placing 460th out of 2,737 overall and 360th among 1,521 men.

Tague’s swim time was 23:57, his bike time was 1:06:53, and his run time was 49:04. Transitions in between each were 2:28 and 1:21, respectively.

Having improved three positions from his 18th place in his previous attempt at nationals, he is confident that he can do better next year.

Congratulations!

Newark’s CRR Steve Tague is fighting that nemesis—age. The 62-year-old trains in swimming, biking, and running for times like this, when he can test himself against other triathletes of his age and younger. On June 5, he competed at the Rock Hall Triathlon Festival in nearby Rock Hall, Md., and won his age group in the Olympic Sprint Triathlon, finishing 60th overall among 368 participants.

Though his overall time of 2:30:14 seemed reasonably similar to the 2nd- and 3rd-place finishers in the 60-64s, Tague actually blew them out, with a top-ranked 1.5K swim time of 28:37 and second-ranked 40K bike and 10K run times of 1:08:12 and 50:42, respectively. In fact, if one were to total the three event ranking times in his age group and use cross-country scoring, he would have a 5 to his nearest competitors’ 11 and 12. His two transition times were likewise faster than his age group’s 2nd- and 3rd-place finishers, who hailed from West Chester, Pa., and Chesapeake, Va., respectively.

Tague was not particularly happy with his run time (at an 8:10/mi. pace), so he hopes to improve on that in future such events. Then, there’s that “Father Time” thing. No, it never gets any easier.

Creek Road Runners collectively say, “Great job.”

photo of Diane KukichIt seems that when CRR Diane Kukich wants to compete, she looks for the not-so-run-of-the-mill competitions and always performs well. March 6 was no exception, as she won her age group (60-69) in the 3rd Annual Central YMCA Tri-Scramble indoor triathlon.

Kukich ran 3 miles on the treadmill in 23:58, covered 15 miles on the stationary cycle in 38:20, and swam 500 yards (20 laps) in the pool in 10:11. Her total time of 1:12:29 placed her 22nd overall out of 53 competitors. She was the 5th female finisher overall and would have come in either first or second in all the other female age groups except the 20-29s! She finished more than 20 minutes ahead of the second-place finisher in her age group. Wow.

Creek Road Runners is an informal association of runners/joggers who frequent the only quiet scenic road out of Newark, Delaware.
