In a total time of 1:20:59, CRR Doug Repetti was the top competitor in the 65-69 age group, coming in 73rd overall out of 224 in the Top of Delaware Sprint Triathlon, a stiff test in summer heat and humidity. Repetti exited the water after the 1/4-mile swim in 14:44, covered the 11.4-mile hilly bike course in 35:07 (~19.5 mph), and finished off with the 2.6-mile run (up the Reservoir approach road, a wooded loop, the Reservoir loop, down the approach road, and up the steep side of the Reservoir hill) in 28:50.

photo of Sue Barton at Top of Delaware Triathlon 2016Coming out of the water ahead of Repetti time-wise was CRR Sue Barton, who was also the top competitor in her age group (55-59), finishing 77th overall in 1:22:11. She swam the quarter mile in 12:00, did the bike leg in 38:51 (~17.6 mph), and finished with a 29:00 run leg. Barton was the 13th female overall.

photo of Rich Braun at Top of Delaware Duathlon 2016In the Sprint Duathlon, CRR Rich Braun (having eschewed the swim for an additional run leg) was the second finisher in the 55-59 age group and 14th overall out of 45 competitors. He completed the duathlon course in 1:15:19. Braun was 23rd on each of the first and third legs (1.5-mile run in 10:56; 2.6-mile run in 26:46), but blasted the bike leg in 35:10 (~19.5 mph), 8th among all duathlon competitors.

Congratulations! The three of you made us Creek Road Runners proud.

At least four Creek Road Runners recently poured their all into the spring’s longer, marquis running events—the Caesar Rodney Half Marathon and the Boston Marathon.

photo of Doug Repettiphoto of Jon FletcherOn April 3rd, three men from our group ran the Caesar Rodney Half Marathon. At age 37, CRR Barret Michalec led the way with an impressive 1:29:10, finishing 27th overall out of 612 competitors, while 65-yr.-old CRR Doug Repetti (65-69) ran a 1:50:26, and 63-yr.-old CRR Jon Fletcher finished in 2:06:03 (2:04:57 chip).

Congratulations to each of you!

Icicle Ten Miler, michalec, repetti

Normally, the annual mid-January Icicle Ten Miler in Wilmington is as much a challenge due to the weather and conditions as it is because of the distance. This year was a big El Niño exception. Warm temperatures may have even caused some problems in the other direction. Not so for two “Icemen,” though.

photo of Barret Michalecphoto of Doug RepettiOut of the 363 finishers, CRR Barret Michalec finished 40th overall, placing 3rd in his age group (35-39) with a wonderful time of 1:10:13. CRR Doug Repetti took 2nd in the 65-69s, placing 107th overall, with a 1:21:32. Repetti was just 8 seconds off winning his age group outright. Congratulations to both of you.

The traditional Thanksgiving Day PNC Bank 10K and 5K races in Wilmington, Del., brought out the best among several Creek Road Runners.

photo of Bruce WeberLeading the way in the 5K was CRR Clark Ridge (no photo available), who placed 9th overall out of 1,785 finishers and won the 35-39 age group in a lightning fast 17:24. Coming in 20th overall was CRR Bruce Weber, who won the 50-54s in a super 18:41, just north of 6 minutes per mile.

photo of Doug RepettiridgeFor the second time in less than a week, the two Dougs (Repetti and Ridge) won their respective age groups. CRR Doug Repetti (60-64) won in 22:56, and CRR Doug Ridge, father of Clark and CRR Claron Ridge (who also ran), posted a 24:34 on the day.

photo of Ann Jornlinphoto of Tripp ShentonOn the distaff side, it’s part of their family holiday tradition to run this race, and each year CRR Ann Jornlin seems to be on the podium. This year was no exception, as Ann took second in the 60-64s in 25:03.

In the 10K, CRR Tripp Shenton captured third place among the 55-59s in 50:17.

Leave it to the older guys to take home the accolades in this, the longest-running 10K/5K event in Delaware—Newark’s Annual Turkey Trot. Four Creek Road Runners took home hardware on the day.

photo of Doug RepettiCRR Doug Repetti ran both the 10K and the 5K, winning the 60-64 division of the 10K in 47:33 and taking an age-group second in the 5K in 23:44—a very impressive endurance showing. Repetti placed 40th overall out of 247 finishers in the 10K.

photo of Mark DeshonIn the 5K, CRR Mark Deshon posted the fastest time of the day among the Creek Road Runners while winning the 55-59 age group in 20:50. This was a strong time for Deshon, who weathered having a shoelace come untied at the mile-and-a-half point and being dusted in the final straightaway by age-group compatriot Epi Camacho. (Deshon later found out that Camacho had won their age group in the 10K in a blazing 41:20 and was running the 5K as a cool down, more or less.) Deshon placed 16th overall out of 529 finishers.

ridgeThe most senior of the CRR senior citizen age-group winners on the day was CRR Doug Ridge, who posted a respectable 24:31 among the 70-and-overs in the 5K, despite coming off a stomach flu and wrestling chronic hamstring soreness. Not bad at all for an old man.

Rounding out the honorees is the irrepressible CRR Bruce Hubbard, who took second among the 65-69 men in the 10K, finishing in 1:01:11.

You’re a real runner if…

acronyms like PR and DNF are verbs.

the thought of signing up for a 401K is scary.

your blood pressure is 92 over 56 and you are conscious.

you drive 100 miles to a 5K race.

you can convert kilometers to miles in your head.

your iPod has a “running” playlist.

you check out road races while on vacation.

you’ve converted your marathon medals into a wind chime.

you consider running 3 miles to be a warm up.

you know the shoe store guy better than some relatives.

you drive down the freeway and think to yourself, “Hey, my car is doing 1-minute miles.”

you know that PR stands for something other than Puerto Rico.

you use your bib numbers to wallpaper your garage.

your resting heart rate is too low to give blood.

you look forward to birthdays when your age changes to a number ending with a 0 or 5.

you consider your latest race shirt “formal wear.”

you mentally measure junk food in miles rather than calories.

you have your own name for all the local public trails.
