In a total time of 1:20:59, CRR Doug Repetti was the top competitor in the 65-69 age group, coming in 73rd overall out of 224 in the Top of Delaware Sprint Triathlon, a stiff test in summer heat and humidity. Repetti exited the water after the 1/4-mile swim in 14:44, covered the 11.4-mile hilly bike course in 35:07 (~19.5 mph), and finished off with the 2.6-mile run (up the Reservoir approach road, a wooded loop, the Reservoir loop, down the approach road, and up the steep side of the Reservoir hill) in 28:50.

photo of Sue Barton at Top of Delaware Triathlon 2016Coming out of the water ahead of Repetti time-wise was CRR Sue Barton, who was also the top competitor in her age group (55-59), finishing 77th overall in 1:22:11. She swam the quarter mile in 12:00, did the bike leg in 38:51 (~17.6 mph), and finished with a 29:00 run leg. Barton was the 13th female overall.

photo of Rich Braun at Top of Delaware Duathlon 2016In the Sprint Duathlon, CRR Rich Braun (having eschewed the swim for an additional run leg) was the second finisher in the 55-59 age group and 14th overall out of 45 competitors. He completed the duathlon course in 1:15:19. Braun was 23rd on each of the first and third legs (1.5-mile run in 10:56; 2.6-mile run in 26:46), but blasted the bike leg in 35:10 (~19.5 mph), 8th among all duathlon competitors.

Congratulations! The three of you made us Creek Road Runners proud.

photo of Doug Repetti finishing in the 2015 Top of Delaware Sprint TriathlonTwo Creek Road Runners—CRR Doug Repetti and CRR Mary Braun—performed well at the third annual Top of Delaware Sprint Triathlon here in Newark last weekend. Each set a new PR for this tough quarter-mile swim, 11.4-mile bike, 2.6-mile run course.

Though he came out of the water quite a bit behind relative to how he finished, Repetti was strong on the bike leg (26th), averaging nearly 19.8 mph.

Braun came in 3rd in her age group (50-54) in 1:22:08, placing 122nd overall and 25th among the women. She, too, performed very well on the bike portion (108th), averaging just over 17.1 mph. She PR’d by nearly 10 minutes on this course.

Well done, both of you.

The Newark Morning Rotary Rock & Roll 5K was a fantasy of sorts—a unique opportunity to run on the cushy, well-manicured grass of the Newark Country Club’s golf course on Saturday. It was a no-frills event but a fun time, nevertheless, with the popular local band Club Phred playing before, during, and after the race. A few Creek Road Runners excelled.

photo of Bill Rosephoto of Becky GeorgeTaking age-group firsts were CRR Bill Rose and CRR Becky George, who each won the 50-59s. Rose must have really enjoyed the surface, as evidenced by his 19:15 time (fourth place overall). George’s time was 25:27.

CRR Bob Taggart (60+) and CRR Mary Braun (50-59) took age-group seconds, Taggart coming in with a 26:09 and Braun not too far behind in 26:36.

An honorable mention of sorts goes to husband and wife CRR Dave Schultz (23:06) and CRR Christine Schultz (24:58), who each placed third in the 40-49 age group. It was a true family affair for the Schultzes, with daughter Lawson taking second and son Ben taking third among the 13-and-unders.

Several Creek Road Runners came out to support the fight against ALS in memory of CRR Scott Mackler on Sunday. Six took home accolades.

German finished a whisker (six-tenths of a second) ahead of Rose; they took 6th and 7th overall, respectively, out of 266 finishers.

amerphoto of Bob OpilaCRR Bob Opila captured a rare age-group victory, winning the 60-69s in 25:34. Opila was followed in that same age group by CRR Paul Amer, who took 2nd in 27:54. Good race selection, you guys!

You’re a real runner if…

acronyms like PR and DNF are verbs.

the thought of signing up for a 401K is scary.

your blood pressure is 92 over 56 and you are conscious.

you drive 100 miles to a 5K race.

you can convert kilometers to miles in your head.

your iPod has a “running” playlist.

you check out road races while on vacation.

you’ve converted your marathon medals into a wind chime.

you consider running 3 miles to be a warm up.

you know the shoe store guy better than some relatives.

you drive down the freeway and think to yourself, “Hey, my car is doing 1-minute miles.”

you know that PR stands for something other than Puerto Rico.

you use your bib numbers to wallpaper your garage.

your resting heart rate is too low to give blood.

you look forward to birthdays when your age changes to a number ending with a 0 or 5.

you consider your latest race shirt “formal wear.”

you mentally measure junk food in miles rather than calories.

you have your own name for all the local public trails.
