5K, Reviresco, The Green, UD

image of event informationBridging the civilian-military divide is the concern of a student group on the University of Delaware campus. The group, Reviresco, will be holding its second annual 5K Run/Walk at the UD Green on Sunday, April 29. Day-of registration begins at 10:15 a.m., and the race—around UD’s Central and South Green—will start at 11 a.m. The best part about this race is the price—only $5!

You can also register via the group’s Facebook page (click on the image for a larger view).

John Carlos photo collageNow called “The World’s Fastest Humanitarian,” Dr. John Carlos, who (along with Tommie Smith) shook the world at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City with his raised fist protest on the medal stand, will speak at the University of Delaware’s Trabant University Center Theatre on Tuesday, Feb. 20, at 5 p.m.

Titled “Fifty Years Later ‘WE’ Still Raising Our Fists,” this event is a University of Delaware Black History Month lecture and is open to the public free of charge.

Carlos is a renowned former track and field athlete who was inducted in to the USA Track and Field Hall of Fame in 2003.

At the height of the civil rights struggle in the USA, Dr. Carlos made world history during the 1968 Olympics, when he and Smith took to the international stage during the medal ceremony and made a speechless statement heard around the world.

Since 1968, Carlos has continued his life-long mission to improve human rights conditions and to increase changes for the success of our youth.

CRR Bob Bennett promos the course with the 10th Anniversary t-shirt.

New Year’s Eve day is less than three weeks away. That means it’s time to start planning for the 19th annual “Wring Out the Old, Ring in the New” trail run, to take place at 12 noon on Sunday, Dec. 31, at Fair Hill Natural Resources Management Area, just over the state line in Maryland.

We’d kind of like to know ahead of time who will be participating this year, to help us better plan for the numbers. No, there won’t be a giveaway T-shirt this year, but we will do some kind of random giveaway to a lucky first-timer. Not familiar with the run? Check it out!

New start time this year: 12 noon! (So, don’t show up at 9 a.m., unless you want to wait three hours out in the cold or warm up with a rather quick marathon.) Woo-hoo! Should be warmer by noon.

So, shoot Mark Deshon an email to let him know you’re interested in the run, and he’ll be in touch.

Newark Turkey Trot 10K/5K cartoonNext Saturday, Nov. 18, the Newark community will gather, pre-holiday eating, to run in the 45th Annual Turkey Trot 10K and 5K races on Barksdale Road. The 10K will start at 9:00 and the 5K at 10:30.

This classic road race provides variety in both its one-loop and two-loop choices, with mild (but sufficiently challenging) hills and but a few turns.

Register now online and save (before Nov. 15 at noon). Want to run both races? Save even more. Day-of registration begins at 8:00.

10 miler, 5K, Caffé Gelato, waffle cone

Caffé Gelato waffle cone logoThe annual Caffé Gelato Waffle Cone 10 Miler and 5K run/walk (new this year) will be held on Sunday, Oct. 29, at 9 a.m. The 10 Miler is the quintessential Creek Road run, as the course takes you out Creek Road along White Clay Creek all the way up into Pennsylvania’s White Clay Preserve before reversing course and heading back to Newark. The event includes a buffet brunch afterward.

You can register online for the ten miler at a pre-registration cost of $40 (by noon on Thursday, Oct. 26) or day-of cost of $50, but Caffé Gelato owner and CRR Ryan German is offering a special price of $20 to all official Creek Road Runners. Simply email Ryan and say “I’m a Creek Road Runner and I want to register for the event.” Then bring $20 with you to the registration table during the day of the event and indicate when you register that you are an official “Creek Road Runner.”

Creek Road Runners thank Ryan for this generous offer!

You’re a real runner if…

acronyms like PR and DNF are verbs.

the thought of signing up for a 401K is scary.

your blood pressure is 92 over 56 and you are conscious.

you drive 100 miles to a 5K race.

you can convert kilometers to miles in your head.

your iPod has a “running” playlist.

you check out road races while on vacation.

you’ve converted your marathon medals into a wind chime.

you consider running 3 miles to be a warm up.

you know the shoe store guy better than some relatives.

you drive down the freeway and think to yourself, “Hey, my car is doing 1-minute miles.”

you know that PR stands for something other than Puerto Rico.

you use your bib numbers to wallpaper your garage.

your resting heart rate is too low to give blood.

you look forward to birthdays when your age changes to a number ending with a 0 or 5.

you consider your latest race shirt “formal wear.”

you mentally measure junk food in miles rather than calories.

you have your own name for all the local public trails.
