After several years effectively out of competition due to medical issues (including one serious bike accident), CRR Steve Tague is unequivocally back! Yesterday, he led the way for the other eight Creek Road Runners at the Top of Delaware Sprint Triathlon, placing 14th overall out of 271 finishers. He won the men’s 55-59 age group in 1:04:54, placing 17th in the quarter-mile swim, 12th in the 11.4-mile bike (averaging just over 20 mph on the hilly course!), and 32nd in the 2.6-mile run at the Newark Reservoir and Mayor Redd Park trails, which includes a final 30-yard incline straight up the side of the reservoir hill (that’s serious theater).
CRR Rich Braun was the second of the fold to finish, placing 63rd overall in 1:15:41 on the basis of a strong bike leg (17th).
Three other Creek Road Runners took age-group awards on the day—CRR Dan Simmons, coming off an injury to win the 65-69s in 1:16:12, placing 65th; CRR Theresa Kauffman, who took second among the 50-54s in 1:19:46, placing 90th; and CRR Sue Barton, who took second in the 55-59s, rounding out the top 100 finishers in 1:20:38.
Other Creek Road Runners who finished were CRR Ryan German (1:21:38), CRR Jen Pyle (1:25:12), CRR Mary Braun (1:31:58), and CRR Bruce Hubbard (1:39:00), who deserves a big shout out for being the only one of the nine to have indicated “Creek Road Runners” as his registered team. Take a hint, everyone.

CRR Bill Rose hasn’t lost a step in several years now, as is evident with his age group (50-59) win at the Blue Hen 5K on Sunday. Rose turned in a very fast 19:30 to come in 8th overall out of 266 in an unusually fast field. This was eight seconds better than his time last year on the same course.
Not to be outdone, CRR Diane Kukich won her age group (60-69) as well, in 24:37.
Ageless wonder CRR Bob Taggart may have lost a few steps, but he can still get it done too. Taggart won the 70-79 age group in 25:20.
Each of them has won their age group in this race before, so this was not a big surprise. Congratulations for consistency, you three.

If you think the 4-person relay at the Delaware Marathon Running Festival was long, tough, and crowded, take a look at another kind of racing a Creek Road Runner is doing in Switzerland (also see the recent exploits of CRR Paul Amer).
CRR Martin Wolfer, a native of the Zürich area, has been running in what we would consider an ultra-distance relay for more than three decades. He explains, “[This] relay was invented in 1973 and was inspired by a Swedish relay race. It’s organized by the sport club of the two Zürich Universities—ETH Zürich and University of Zürich. It consists of 14 legs, with distances between 4 [2.5 mi.] and 14 km [8.7 mi.]. The overall distance is about 116 km [72 mi.], and the winning time is just under seven hours.”
The race is held around Zürich, mostly on the hilly parts along the Lake of Zürich. All relay transition areas are easily reachable by public transport, so no one needs a car. “This is a necessity,” Wolfer says, “because this year about 900 teams took part and the roads couldn’t take the traffic.” Participants are mainly students or alumni of either of the two universities.
Wolfer adds, “Of course there is a big party after the race. If the University of Delaware intends to participate next year, I certainly could help.”
This was Wolfer’s 32nd time running in this relay. He finished 6th fastest in his division, and his team came in 17th overall.
Wolfer trained on Creek Road back in the late 1980s while a post-doc in chemical engineering at the University of Delaware. A superior competitor, by the time he had returned to Switzerland, Wolfer held the Delaware resident age-group (25-29) records in both the 5k and the marathon! Those records have since been broken, though they held up for 20 and 16 years, respectively. In 1988 he helped the Creek Road Runners team comprising seven University of Delaware runners place second overall in the silver anniversary edition of the Caesar Rodney Half Marathon.

Three 4-person-relay teams comprising Creek Road Runners competed in Wilmington this morning in the Delaware Marathon. Out of the 160 teams competing, the two top CRR teams each placed in the top 20 and took top three honors in their respective divisions.

The Creek Road Runners team of Dave Edwards, Shannon Lennon-Edwards, Bill Farquhar, and Keith Crispin took 3rd in their 4-person relay division.
The Creek Road Runners team, a standard and competitive entrant for the past several years at this event, placed 11th overall, just two-tenths of a second out of the top 10, with a 3:09:27. This year’s team of CRR Keith Crispin (43:21), CRR Shannon Lennon-Edwards (48:15), CRR Dave Edwards (52:33), and CRR Bill Farquhar (45:18) placed third in their relay division.

The Creek Road Runners “B” team (Run Profs Run) of Tripp Shenton, Jeremy Firestone, Vic Kaliakin, and Thomas Schumacher took 2nd in their 4-person relay division.

CRRs Dave and Christine Schultz, half of The Tails of Two Christines team, ran well too, helping their team place 31st overall in the 4-person relay.
The Run Profs Run (a.k.a. Creek Road Runners 2) team missed winning its division by a mere seven seconds, placing 17th overall in 3:26:11. The team took second place behind the efforts of three civil engineering professors—CRR Thomas Schumacher (46:13), CRR Tripp Shenton (51:09), and CRR Vic Kaliakin (56:36)—and marine policy prof and new CRR Jeremy Firestone (52:12), who was a last-minute bereavement sub.
The Tails of Two Christines (a.k.a. Creek Road Runners 3) featured two husband-wife duos and placed 31st overall in 3:42:52. CRR Christine Schultz and husband, CRR Dave Schultz, held their own with times of 54:59 (1st leg) and 54:23 (3rd leg), respectively, while the two newest Creek Road Runners—CRR Christine Cucciarre (1:01:19, 2nd leg) and husband, CRR Frank Cucciarre (52:10, 4th leg), played their part.
