photo of David BrondThere was a nice opinion piece promoting running in the Augusta (Ga.) Chronicle yesterday, written by our own CRR David Brond (CRR’s “Peach State Branch”). Check it out. Gobble, gobble, run, run!

Though Brond mentioned some other Turkey Trots, he failed to mention the local one here in Newark, which turned 40 yesterday and is becoming more and more of a Thanksgiving running tradition (read below).

USA Duathlon/Triathlon 2013 National Championship graphicCRR Dan Simmons is not one to toot his own horn, so someone has to do it for him. On October 26th, Simmons competed in the USA National Duathlon Championship in Tucson, Ariz., placing 4th among the 65-69 men and 233rd out of the 383 finishers. He was one of just three competitors from Delaware.

Though he admits he wish he had done better in the 5K run, 35K bike, 5K run event (rather than deal with the expensive logistics of shipping his own bicycle out west, he rented a bicycle that didn’t fit him very well), Simmons posted a time of 2:00:12 (splits of 21:45, 1:10:39, and 25:02 for the stages plus 2:36 of transition time). This placed him behind only age-group adversaries from Brookfield, Wis., Blue Bell, Pa., and El Sobrante, Calif.

This finish earned Simmons an invitation to the World Duathlon Championship in Pontevedra, Spain, in May. He hasn’t decided yet if he’ll go or not. It’s a long transatlantic swim and his least favorite of the multi-sport “legs.”

Whether for triathloning, cross-training, the thrill of going faster, or simply taking better care of worn-out knees, sooner or later many of us runners consider taking up bicycling. The biking bug definitely caught two Creek Road Runners in particular, both of whom are avid cyclists.

In an effort to raise money for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Delaware in memory of area triathlete Mike Clark, CRR Ann Jornlin and CRR Gail Seitz spent 50 days this past summer trekking by bike from Portland, Ore., to Portsmouth, N.H., with a group of cyclists from the U.S. and elsewhere through the organization America by Bicycle.

They blogged daily during the trip; their blog gives great insight into their personal experiences and the beauty of this country as seen atop a skinny leather cushion on a seatpost.

Jornlin and Seitz raised nearly $80,000 for the Mike Clark Legacy Foundation, the primary beneficiary of which is the Boys & Girls Clubs of Delaware. Well done times two!

CRR Dan Simmons began chipping away at CRR Bob Taggart’s stranglehold on the men’s list of Creek Road Runner state record holders by blowing by Taggart’s five-year-old half-marathon record of 1:37:52 in the 65-69 age group with a 1:36:43* in Saturday’s Rehoboth Beach Half Marathon. In winning his age group, Simmons came in 53rd overall out of 857 finishers. In breaking this record, he also virtually broke the state record for the 20km distance, also previously held by Taggart. Simmons is a biology professor at the University of Delaware and is also a member of the Pike Creek Valley Running Club.

Congratulations, Dan!

You’re a real runner if…

acronyms like PR and DNF are verbs.

the thought of signing up for a 401K is scary.

your blood pressure is 92 over 56 and you are conscious.

you drive 100 miles to a 5K race.

you can convert kilometers to miles in your head.

your iPod has a “running” playlist.

you check out road races while on vacation.

you’ve converted your marathon medals into a wind chime.

you consider running 3 miles to be a warm up.

you know the shoe store guy better than some relatives.

you drive down the freeway and think to yourself, “Hey, my car is doing 1-minute miles.”

you know that PR stands for something other than Puerto Rico.

you use your bib numbers to wallpaper your garage.

your resting heart rate is too low to give blood.

you look forward to birthdays when your age changes to a number ending with a 0 or 5.

you consider your latest race shirt “formal wear.”

you mentally measure junk food in miles rather than calories.

you have your own name for all the local public trails.
