Dunkin' Donuts, riordan, UD

photo of Charlie RiordanCharlie runs on Dunkin’Congratulations to CRR Charlie Riordan who was just appointed Vice President for Research, Scholarship and Innovation at the University of Delaware. These three areas certainly cover a lot of ground on campus. We know that Charlie will shine; the question is… Will he still run? Could depend a lot on corporate sponsorship (see image at right), although with his new position, we imagine a bit of a bump in that category too. See you on Creek Road, Charlie.

fischer, hall of fame, sports, UD, University of Delaware

photo of Jim Fischer tracksideThose of us who know former University of Delaware cross-country and track and field coach CRR Jim Fischer are indeed thinking how bittersweet an honor this must be for him to be told he’ll be so received by the same institution that five years ago took away from him the job he so loved.

Supremely respected in this community, Fischer will indeed be inducted into the University of Delaware Sports Hall of Fame class of 2016 on October 28, along with other UD sports greats, including Baltimore Ravens’ quarterback Joe Flacco.

Congratulations, Coach. No one is worthier of this honor, for all you’ve done for so many over three decades of coaching. See Blue Hen Athletics story. See University of Delaware article.

cucciarre, English, UD, University of Delaware

photo of Christine CucciarreAssociate professor of English and CRR Christine Cucciarre is one of four recipients of this year’s Excellence in Teaching Awards at the University of Delaware. In her own words:

“I want those who were confident coming into my class to realize that there was, and is, more to learn about writing, and those who lacked confidence to know that they have the ability to think and write. And I really try to get them to see writing differently, as a process for making sense of all the new things they are learning.” See full story.

Let’s hear it for those who can both write and teach writing as well as run. Congratulations, Christine.

photo of Matt RobinsonSounds like alphabet soup, does’t it? No, it’s not the latest social media abbreviation.

Our very own self-appointed “CEO” CRR Matt Robinson has been named acting director of intercollegiate athletics and recreation services at the University of Delaware, effective Dec. 31, 2015—the day of our annual “Wring Out the Old, Ring in the New” trail run.

Coincidence? Not a chance.

photo of Jim Fischer tracksideMaybe now in his new role (while he’s there), he can do for UD what he’s done over the past several years for Creek Road Runners—provide hands-off leadership. However, having said that, for his first order of business, most Creek Road Runners feel strongly that his first and foremost order of business should be to right a wrong by reinstating the men’s DI running programs at UD and bringing back beloved former UD coach and CRR Jim Fischer.

A pipe dream? Maybe. But never doubt the spirit and influence of a man who appoints himself as a “CEO.”

Robinson replaces Eric Ziady, who announced he was stepping down from the post. Congratulations, Matt!

photo of Bill Rose finishing 5KThree hundred thirteen runners finished the Blue Hen Homecoming 5K last Friday at the University of Delaware Athletic Complex. Of those, four Creek Road Runners took home awards in special categories.

CRR Bill Rose (pictured) hasn’t lost a step in a few years now and proved that again with a third place overall finish in 19:22. Finishing first in the “UD Employee/Retiree” class, business school dean and CRR Bruce Weber posted a 20:36, coming in 7th overall. Not bad for his first of two weekend races. Taking third in the same class with a 20:50 was CRR Steve Tague, coming in 10th overall.

CRR Diane Kukich took third among the females in that same class in 26:26. She would have also won her ten-year age group (60-69). CRR Mark Deshon finished 14th overall but was 2nd among the “Alumni” runners in 21:07. Had there been a 50-59 age group, Rose and Weber would have placed 1st and 2nd, Tague and Deshon, 4th and 5th, respectively.

Speaking of “what if’s,” CRR Bob Taggart (26:34) and CRR Paul Amer (30:31) would have won the 70-and-over and 60-69 age groups, respectively. Nice job, guys.

A special shout-out to CRR Nick Sisofo, who made a rare appearance on campus with a 26:54. Thanks to CRR Kathy Corbitt and her HealthyU Employee Wellness staff for organizing a fun event around Homecoming Weekend.

You’re a real runner if…

acronyms like PR and DNF are verbs.

the thought of signing up for a 401K is scary.

your blood pressure is 92 over 56 and you are conscious.

you drive 100 miles to a 5K race.

you can convert kilometers to miles in your head.

your iPod has a “running” playlist.

you check out road races while on vacation.

you’ve converted your marathon medals into a wind chime.

you consider running 3 miles to be a warm up.

you know the shoe store guy better than some relatives.

you drive down the freeway and think to yourself, “Hey, my car is doing 1-minute miles.”

you know that PR stands for something other than Puerto Rico.

you use your bib numbers to wallpaper your garage.

your resting heart rate is too low to give blood.

you look forward to birthdays when your age changes to a number ending with a 0 or 5.

you consider your latest race shirt “formal wear.”

you mentally measure junk food in miles rather than calories.

you have your own name for all the local public trails.
