Creek Road, deshon, photos, rose, White Clay Creek, winter

photo of Mark Deshon and Bill RoseTwo Creek Road Runners had separate winter adventures with a camera recently.

CRR Mark Deshon picked an extremely cold weekend to run in the Adirondacks this past Saturday, while CRR Bill Rose stayed close to home and captured some nice wintry shots of White Clay Creek from scenic venues along Creek Road on a relatively balmy (ha, ha) Monday. Mark’s photos include a shot of the outdoor thermometer at -17°F as he started out (the wind chill was quite a bit lower) and a close-up showing his frozen eyebrows post-run. Click on photos below for a larger view.

Enjoy! The groundhog says we have a few more weeks to endure ’til spring.

photo of Bill Rosephoto of Doug RepettiA triple scoop, please, for the Creek Road Runners. The Caffé Gelato Waffle Cone Ten Miler, which features pretty much the entire length of Creek Road and some of its off-shoot trails (well into Pennsylvania and back), featured three age-group winners on Sunday, as well as a couple notable performances.

parsonscCRR Bill Rose came in 16th overall out of 269 participants in winning the 55-59 age group in a fast 1:08:20. CRR Doug Repetti sneaked in just under the 80-minute mark to win the 60-64s in 1:19:51. On the female side, CRR Christina Parsons took first in the 50-54 age group in a very respectable 1:22:13.

Race host and Caffé Gelato owner CRR Ryan German had a busy morning, placing fourth in his age group (35-39) and 22nd overall with a 1:11:22 effort, finishing second among the Creek Road Runners. Then he helped serve the post-race brunch! CRR David Coker, the third CRR to finish, ran an impressively steady race, placing 35th overall and a solid fourth in the 45-49s in 1:14:48.

Congratulations to all Creek Road Runners who finished, especially with the difficult uphill climb at the end.

All clear!

Creek Road, Delaware State Parks, storm damage, tree removal

westsidecosmeticsA couple late spring/early summer storms left tree damage and some physical impediments along a few stretches of Creek Road and the Pomeroy Trail.

Thanks to Delaware State Parks, the debris has been removed for the most part, and Creek Road is passable again.

Happy running once again.

A huge tree (at least three feet in diameter) came crashing down recently in the section of Creek Road a short distance north of the auto barriers, pulling with its root structure half the side of a hill and landing across Creek Road and into White Clay Creek. So heavy was the tree that even the pavement couldn’t stop it from splitting the road surface in two (click on photos for better view).

If that weren’t bad enough, at least two more trees came down in last night’s severe storm, one blocking Creek Road, about 150 yards north of the aforementioned behemoth, and a big debris field of about 10 yards in length along the unpaved portion of the Pomeroy Trail between the two bridges north of the Laird Campus spur.

Pomeroy Trail blocked by downed tree limbs

One can avoid these by 1) taking Creek Road all the way past the S-curve, like we used to do before the Pomeroy Trail was completed, and 2) take the trail and bridge to the east side of the Creek north to avoid the other two blockages.

cautionOf course, if you just have to see the damage close up, please exercise caution.

You’re a real runner if…

acronyms like PR and DNF are verbs.

the thought of signing up for a 401K is scary.

your blood pressure is 92 over 56 and you are conscious.

you drive 100 miles to a 5K race.

you can convert kilometers to miles in your head.

your iPod has a “running” playlist.

you check out road races while on vacation.

you’ve converted your marathon medals into a wind chime.

you consider running 3 miles to be a warm up.

you know the shoe store guy better than some relatives.

you drive down the freeway and think to yourself, “Hey, my car is doing 1-minute miles.”

you know that PR stands for something other than Puerto Rico.

you use your bib numbers to wallpaper your garage.

your resting heart rate is too low to give blood.

you look forward to birthdays when your age changes to a number ending with a 0 or 5.

you consider your latest race shirt “formal wear.”

you mentally measure junk food in miles rather than calories.

you have your own name for all the local public trails.
