CRR Ken Seaman, 1950–2013

Well before his knees gave out on him, CRR Ken Seaman was a force to be reckoned with—on the road, in the water, on the bike, or some combination thereof. Even with substantial discomfort in his knees, Seaman would often jump in a local 5K or two and go as hard as he could. He loved the beach life and often ran the popular Bottle & Cork 10 Miler. In his heyday, Seaman competed with fellow triathlete buddies CRR Chip Fletcher, CRR John Zolper, and CRR Willie Cain, who was his next-door neighbor and one of his best friends.

Professionally, Seaman had been an instructor and academic coordinator of clinical education in the Physical Therapy Program at the University of Delaware for over 20 years, a testament to his love of health and fitness. He had great passion for volunteering and outreach, which earned him the Jefferson Award in 2002 and the Volunteer of the Year award from the MS Society of Delaware.

Since 1999, Creek Road Runners have been gathering on Dec. 31 at Fair Hill Natural Resources Management Area to “Wring Out the Old, Ring In the New,” celebrating the end of the year and the promise of a new one while enjoying camaraderie along a 7.5km trail loop.

CRR Matt Robinson, self-appointed CEO

CRR Matt Robinson, CRR’s self-appointed CEO and professor of sport management at the University of Delaware, has been named chair of the Delaware Sports Commission. In addition, CRR Kim Gomes has been named the chair of the Commission’s legislative committee.

Perhaps now Creek Road Runners will get the attention it deserves.

CRR Paul Amer quoted Robinson as having said, “It’s a great day for Creek Road Runners, especially with the recent completion of the new Pomeroy Trail that gives me and others new off-road running options.”

Pomeroy Trail officially opens

federal, state, and local officials cut the ribbon to open the Pomeroy Trail

Interim City Manager Carol Houck, Councilman Jerry Clifton, Secretary Bhatt, Mayor Vance Funk, U.S. Senator Carper, Gov. Markell, State Senator Liane Sorensen, and Secretary O’Mara join in the ribbon-cutting ceremony on September 10, 2012.

Good things are happening for runners here in Newark.  U.S. Senator Tom Carper, Governor Jack Markell, DelDOT Secretary Shailen Bhatt, DNREC Secretary Collin O’Mara, and city officials cut the ribbon yesterday on the new two-mile multi-use trail that runs north-south from Creek Road along the old Pomeroy and Newark railroad bed to the east-west-running James F. Hall Trail along the southern portion of the center of the city.

This should give runners more choices, particularly in terms of off-road routes to and from Creek Road.

Note that the only portion of the Pomeroy Trail that is still under construction is the portion between the Laird Campus trailhead and the northernmost trailhead at Creek Road (at the “S” curve). Both new bridges are in place, but they’re not very “runable” at this time.

For construction-stage photos on the northern half of the Pomeroy Trail, see posts from August, April, and February of this year.

photo of trail just south of the Laird Campus spurMuch progress has been made on the Pomeroy Trail’s northern section since April’s progress post. Split-rail fencing, final surfacing, and lighting infrastructure has been completed along all of this portion of the trail up to and including the Laird Campus spur. One of the two bridges north of the Laird Campus spur has been positioned; north of that bridge, the trail is unfinished. The following views (listed below) were from August 18. Also see Bike Delaware’s video of most of this northern section.

Note: The formal dedication of the Pomeroy Trail will take place on Monday, September 10, at 11 a.m. at the south Pomeroy trailhead (at the Hall Trail).

You’re a real runner if…

acronyms like PR and DNF are verbs.

the thought of signing up for a 401K is scary.

your blood pressure is 92 over 56 and you are conscious.

you drive 100 miles to a 5K race.

you can convert kilometers to miles in your head.

your iPod has a “running” playlist.

you check out road races while on vacation.

you’ve converted your marathon medals into a wind chime.

you consider running 3 miles to be a warm up.

you know the shoe store guy better than some relatives.

you drive down the freeway and think to yourself, “Hey, my car is doing 1-minute miles.”

you know that PR stands for something other than Puerto Rico.

you use your bib numbers to wallpaper your garage.

your resting heart rate is too low to give blood.

you look forward to birthdays when your age changes to a number ending with a 0 or 5.

you consider your latest race shirt “formal wear.”

you mentally measure junk food in miles rather than calories.

you have your own name for all the local public trails.
