CRR Jim Fischer, who effectively lost his job when the University of Delaware dumped its DI men’s running program two years ago, has been hired to head up the men’s and women’s cross-country programs at Delaware Technical Community College’s Stanton campus.

See story in News Journal.

Fischer became the University of Delaware’s coach for men’s cross-country, indoor track, and outdoor track in 1982. He coached the UD women’s cross-country team and its track team’s distance runners from 2008-11. Delaware eliminated the men’s indoor program after the 2008-09 season, then axed men’s cross-country and outdoor track after the 2010-11 season, citing Title IX concerns and economics.

photo of Dan SimmonsCR race logoCRR Dan Simmons, fresh off a recent vacation in Australia, won the 65-69 age group in the 50th running of the Caesar Rodney Half Marathon today.  His 1:40:53 was a bit off his state record of 1:36:43 (set last year), but a good time nevertheless.  He finished a competitive 319th out of the of 1,423 finishers.  Congratulations!

photo of Paul Amer after Caesar RodneyA noteworthy postscript…

A proud CRR Paul Amer is shown here with the finishers’ medal around his neck after having completed the race in just under 2 hours and 4 minutes. Upon being told that Amer didn’t quite make the goal of two hours toward which self-proclaimed Creek Road Runners CEO CRR Matt Robinson had been coaching him, Robinson promptly decided to give up coaching runners and stick to what he does best—administration and global schmoozing.  Good decision, Matt.

Well done to all CRRs who braved yesterday’s half marathon.

photo of Dan and Sue Simmons at Sydney harborCRR Dan Simmons was kind enough to say a few words about and send some photos taken on the recent trip that he and his wife, Sue, took to Australia.  In his own words…

Sue and I had an awesome time. We started in Melbourne after an arduous 16-hour flight from L.A. The day we landed, it was hot and eventually got to 102°F.

Great article on local coach

The News Journal’s Brad Myers wrote a great article on the secret behind the success of the running program at the Tatnall School in Wilmington—its coach, Pat Castagno.  On “National Signing Day” this past week, five of his current protégés signed running scholarships for college.  This is an amazing thing for a school with such a small population.  But Castagno, a product of the coaching of CRR Jim Fischer at Delaware, has done amazing things with Tatnall’s program, recognized as one of the best nationally.

Two former Tatnall runners, siblings Molly and Sam Parsons, are scholarship runners at Richmond and North Carolina State, respectively.  They are CRR George Parsons and CRR Christina Parsons’ kids.

You’re a real runner if…

acronyms like PR and DNF are verbs.

the thought of signing up for a 401K is scary.

your blood pressure is 92 over 56 and you are conscious.

you drive 100 miles to a 5K race.

you can convert kilometers to miles in your head.

your iPod has a “running” playlist.

you check out road races while on vacation.

you’ve converted your marathon medals into a wind chime.

you consider running 3 miles to be a warm up.

you know the shoe store guy better than some relatives.

you drive down the freeway and think to yourself, “Hey, my car is doing 1-minute miles.”

you know that PR stands for something other than Puerto Rico.

you use your bib numbers to wallpaper your garage.

your resting heart rate is too low to give blood.

you look forward to birthdays when your age changes to a number ending with a 0 or 5.

you consider your latest race shirt “formal wear.”

you mentally measure junk food in miles rather than calories.

you have your own name for all the local public trails.
