CRR Mark Deshon, co-founder of the Creek Road Runners, was inducted into the Pike Creek Valley Running Club (PCVRC) Hall of Fame on March 14.

Criteria for induction are impressive personal accomplishments, support of the club, and positive impact on the Delaware running community.

During the ceremony, Deshon thanked the club and several individuals who have influenced his 53-year running career to date, including CRR Jim Fischer and the late CRR Bob Bennett.

Deshon joined this distinct pantheon of PCVRC runners that includes Fischer, CRR Bob Taggart, and CRR Deborah Compton.

Read the Hall of Fame citation and see the video of Deshon’s induction.

CRR Mike Shay was recently named a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union (AGU), a prestigious honor from the largest Earth and space sciences association in the world. A University of Delaware (UD) physics professor, Shay is an expert in plasma physics in space and was cited “for major breakthroughs and sustained impact in understanding magnetic reconnection in space.”

Shay was formally recognized in San Francisco during the AGU’s annual meeting last week, which drew thousands of participants from 100 countries.

“I am honored and frankly somewhat overwhelmed to receive this recognition,” Shay said. “I feel very lucky to have so many great scientists as both colleagues and friends. They have been and continue to be an inspiration to me.”

Honored by the UD Women’s Caucus, CRR Shannon Lennon, professor of kinesiology and applied physiology, was named the 2023 recipient of the Torch Award for advancing women’s equality on campus.

She has always felt strongly about supporting and promoting women at UD and puts her beliefs into practice as chair of the Institutional Review Board and director of the Cardiovascular Nutrition Lab at UD.

“I’m committed to diversity, equity and inclusion issues,” she said. “Within our research, we must work harder to recruit diverse research subjects and ensure our research opportunities are open to all people, and that means we have to appeal to them and get them interested in our work.

“Within the Department of Kinesiology and Applied Physiology, I reach out to junior female faculty members and serve as a resource to them. I’m also vocal at department meetings about advocating for issues that are important to women.”

Congratulations to both of you!

goodwin, happiness, retirement, University of Delaware

photo of Steve Goodwin

CRR Steve Goodwin has been a fixture on Creek Road during his 30-year tenure at the University of Delaware.

Not that he’s looking for publicity or anything like that, but when Goodwin (known to many friends, colleagues, and former students as “Goody”) retired this month, it was wholly appropriate that someone document in writing a summary of the true good that he did during in his teaching/mentoring career at UD. Here’s an excerpt from that article:

Goodwin, an associate professor of health behavior and nutrition sciences, who’s retiring after 30 years, was inspired to start [a class about happiness] about halfway into his career at UD after re-reading The Art of Happiness by the Dalai Lama.

“I want my students to be better people,” Goodwin said. “Being a better person can take on a lot of different aspects of their life, and certainly being healthier is being better in some ways, but I’ve always felt it was really important to affect them in the way they interact with others and treat others with respect. If you can help people do that, they’re a better person.”

Steve, Creek Road Runners wish you happiness always, both on and off Creek Road.

PCVRC, rose

Those of you who have been following the running exploits of CRR Bill Rose on CreekRoadRunners.org will know better than to believe that the word “rookie” in any way applies to him, both as a competitive runner and as a local age-group standout.

OK, well Rose, who has enjoyed an extensive running and racing career, was honored last week by the Pike Creek Valley Running Club at its annual banquet as PCVRC’s 2022 Rookie of the Year. Not a bad return for someone who joined the club less than a year ago.

In recent years, Rose has done well at the shorter-distance races and was the stalwart captain of CRR’s successful Delaware Marathon 4-Person Relay teams.

We salute Rose, who recently retired from the University of Delaware and has been organizing CRR’s annual “Wring Out the Old, Ring in the New” trail run since 2019.

Congratulations and continued good running and racing!

During the same indoor 5000m race on January 27th in which Nike-sponsored Woody Kincaid set a new American record, CRR Sam Parsons put down a big initial marker in his 2023 campaign by smashing his previous best time by some nine seconds! Parsons ran a new personal best of 13:12.78 in the John Thomas Terrier Classic Men’s 5000 Run at Boston University’s indoor facility.

Running under Adidas sponsorship, Parsons finished in 7th place out of a whopping 81 finishers, a full 21 seconds behind Kincaid’s record setting 12:51.61. Kincaid’s was not the only national record set that night, as Parsons set a new German national record with his stellar performance! (CRR Christine Parsons is German, and her son has been competing for Germany internationally for several years.)

The BU venue wasn’t a world-class track in the late 1970s when CRR Bruce Weber ran on the previous flat asphalt 10-lap-to-the-mile track in what was then called the Commonwealth Armory.

Parsons’ dad, CRR George Parsons, is now looking forward to seeing his son compete at the Millrose Games on February 11th in the Armory in New York City. The meet will be broadcast on NBC and streamed on FloTrack and Apple TV.

Creek Road Runners are proud.

You’re a real runner if…

acronyms like PR and DNF are verbs.

the thought of signing up for a 401K is scary.

your blood pressure is 92 over 56 and you are conscious.

you drive 100 miles to a 5K race.

you can convert kilometers to miles in your head.

your iPod has a “running” playlist.

you check out road races while on vacation.

you’ve converted your marathon medals into a wind chime.

you consider running 3 miles to be a warm up.

you know the shoe store guy better than some relatives.

you drive down the freeway and think to yourself, “Hey, my car is doing 1-minute miles.”

you know that PR stands for something other than Puerto Rico.

you use your bib numbers to wallpaper your garage.

your resting heart rate is too low to give blood.

you look forward to birthdays when your age changes to a number ending with a 0 or 5.

you consider your latest race shirt “formal wear.”

you mentally measure junk food in miles rather than calories.

you have your own name for all the local public trails.
