There are three upcoming race events worth noting.

For real trail enthusiasts, the Trail Dawgs Athletic Club will host the annual Triple Crown trail races on April 27th at the Walter S. Carpenter Recreation Area of White Clay Creek State Park, off New London Road (Rt. 896) in Newark. Proceeds benefit local homeless shelters. See the TrailDawgs website for details. “Unique” only scratches the surface as a description of this event.  Just ask organizer and CRR John Mackenzie how much fun these off-road races are.

Here are the start times:
7:30 a.m. – Triple Crown Half-Marathon
7:40 a.m. – Delaware Trail Marathon (two loops of the half-marathon course)
10:00 a.m. – Triple Crown 10K
11:15 a.m. – Triple Crown Human Race 5K Run/Walk

Come out to Wilmington’s Tubman Garrett Riverfront Park and join the throngs on Sunday, May 12, at this annual running extravaganza. Registration is still open for the marathon, but team registrations and half-marathon registrations have closed.

Creek Road Runners are again favored to win the co-ed masters relay division, led by CRR Bill Rose, CRR Bill Farqhuar, CRR Dave Edwards, and CRR Shannon Lennon-Edwards. Not running? Come out and cheer for the CRRs.

Like a fast, flat course?  On Saturday, May 18, the Delaware Athletic Trainers’ Association 5K will take place at the Bob Carpenter Center, with registration at 8 a.m. and race start at 9 a.m.  University of Delaware Head Trainer and CRR John Smith urges you to come out and have fun while supporting  programs that are dedicated to the safety of student-athletes, educate the public about the profession of athletic training, and provide athletic training students with leadership opportunities. On-line registration available until Wednesday, May 15.  The race fee is $20.

photo of Dan SimmonsCR race logoCRR Dan Simmons, fresh off a recent vacation in Australia, won the 65-69 age group in the 50th running of the Caesar Rodney Half Marathon today.  His 1:40:53 was a bit off his state record of 1:36:43 (set last year), but a good time nevertheless.  He finished a competitive 319th out of the of 1,423 finishers.  Congratulations!

A proud CRR Paul Amer is shown here with the finishers’ medal around his neck after having completed the race in just under 2 hours and 4 minutes. Upon being told that Amer didn’t quite make the goal of two hours toward which self-proclaimed Creek Road Runners CEO CRR Matt Robinson had been coaching him, Robinson promptly decided to give up coaching runners and stick to what he does best—administration and global schmoozing.  Good decision, Matt.

Well done to all CRRs who braved yesterday’s half marathon.

CRR Jeanine Radice in screenshot of videoCheck out the nice video on University of Delaware women’s assistant basketball coach, CRR Jeanine Radice.  First and foremost, she talks about her running and her competitiveness (great starter, Jeanine).  Only after that does she chat a little about why she likes coaching so much and why she likes Delaware.

Note: This video is one of several profiles, so you may have to actually select hers.

Radice doesn’t get to race much, but she has won the Blue Hen 5K at least twice in its short four-year history.

photo of Dan and Sue Simmons at Sydney harborCRR Dan Simmons was kind enough to say a few words about and send some photos taken on the recent trip that he and his wife, Sue, took to Australia.  In his own words…

Sue and I had an awesome time. We started in Melbourne after an arduous 16-hour flight from L.A. The day we landed, it was hot and eventually got to 102°F.

Great article on local coach

The News Journal’s Brad Myers wrote a great article on the secret behind the success of the running program at the Tatnall School in Wilmington—its coach, Pat Castagno.  On “National Signing Day” this past week, five of his current protégés signed running scholarships for college.  This is an amazing thing for a school with such a small population.  But Castagno, a product of the coaching of CRR Jim Fischer at Delaware, has done amazing things with Tatnall’s program, recognized as one of the best nationally.

Two former Tatnall runners, siblings Molly and Sam Parsons, are scholarship runners at Richmond and North Carolina State, respectively.  They are CRR George Parsons and CRR Christina Parsons’ kids.

You’re a real runner if…

acronyms like PR and DNF are verbs.

the thought of signing up for a 401K is scary.

your blood pressure is 92 over 56 and you are conscious.

you drive 100 miles to a 5K race.

you can convert kilometers to miles in your head.

your iPod has a “running” playlist.

you check out road races while on vacation.

you’ve converted your marathon medals into a wind chime.

you consider running 3 miles to be a warm up.

you know the shoe store guy better than some relatives.

you drive down the freeway and think to yourself, “Hey, my car is doing 1-minute miles.”

you know that PR stands for something other than Puerto Rico.

you use your bib numbers to wallpaper your garage.

your resting heart rate is too low to give blood.

you look forward to birthdays when your age changes to a number ending with a 0 or 5.

you consider your latest race shirt “formal wear.”

you mentally measure junk food in miles rather than calories.

you have your own name for all the local public trails.
