graphic of course map and T-shirt artThree weeks from today at 9 a.m., Creek Road Runners will gather for the 15th Annual “Wring Out the Old, Ring in the New” trail run at Fair Hill Natural Resources Management Area’s Black Bridge Road parking lot (off of Appleton Road, north of Md. Rt. 273).

Organizer CRR Mark Deshon is expecting a big turnout this year, with plenty of new faces. This should be a lot of fun. Note that it is an “all weather” event. Come prepared to run (not race) and have a good time with others. Please be punctual so that you are there for the pre-run photo.

photo of David BrondThere was a nice opinion piece promoting running in the Augusta (Ga.) Chronicle yesterday, written by our own CRR David Brond (CRR’s “Peach State Branch”). Check it out. Gobble, gobble, run, run!

Though Brond mentioned some other Turkey Trots, he failed to mention the local one here in Newark, which turned 40 yesterday and is becoming more and more of a Thanksgiving running tradition (read below).

Two of the races we promote each year are coming up this month.

Turkey Trot logoThe first is the 40th Annual Turkey Trot, Delaware’s second oldest running event. On Saturday, November 23, there will be two races. The 10K begins at 9 a.m.; the 5K starts at 10:15. Come out to Handloff Park off Barksdale Road and celebrate by running one or both races. Details and registration.

Prepare for a grueling, but satisfying trip around the park. There are five races—two for the youngsters (12-and-under girls and boys), one for women (open and masters women run together but are scored separately), one for masters men (40 and older), and one for open men. Details and registration.

Historically, Creek Road Runners have supported these races and have scored very well. Great bookends for your turkey dinner.

Main Street Mile logoFor those who enjoy shortest, “sprintiest” races, maybe this local dash might be to your liking.  Get it over with quickly at the Main Street Mile, to be held on Saturday morning, October 5.  See details and online registration.

And don’t forget the HealthyU 5K, which is on Thursday evening, October 3, which starts right near the University campus (on Academy St.) and finishes on The Green.

You’re a real runner if…

acronyms like PR and DNF are verbs.

the thought of signing up for a 401K is scary.

your blood pressure is 92 over 56 and you are conscious.

you drive 100 miles to a 5K race.

you can convert kilometers to miles in your head.

your iPod has a “running” playlist.

you check out road races while on vacation.

you’ve converted your marathon medals into a wind chime.

you consider running 3 miles to be a warm up.

you know the shoe store guy better than some relatives.

you drive down the freeway and think to yourself, “Hey, my car is doing 1-minute miles.”

you know that PR stands for something other than Puerto Rico.

you use your bib numbers to wallpaper your garage.

your resting heart rate is too low to give blood.

you look forward to birthdays when your age changes to a number ending with a 0 or 5.

you consider your latest race shirt “formal wear.”

you mentally measure junk food in miles rather than calories.

you have your own name for all the local public trails.
