On Saturday, November 3, three Creek Road Runners strutted their best stuff, albeit probably not in tutus. The inaugural 5K was held on the Creek Road course.

In two races on the Saturday before Hurricane Sandy hit, four Creek Road Runners shone like the sun.

Among the slightly older set, CRR Dan Simmons, CRR Diane Kukich, and CRR Bob Taggart each took home age group wins in the Turkey Round Up 5K. Simmons and Kukich dominated the 60-69s with times of 21:53 and 24:32, respectively. Racing veteran Bob Taggart’s winning time in the 70+ age group was 24:37.

Way to go, each of you!

Three Creek Road Runners took home age group wins on Sunday, October 21, on their home course in Newark—Creek Road—in Caffé Gelato’s Waffle Cone Ten Miler.

photo of Bob BennettNot to be denied, Creek Road’s grand old man CRR Bob Bennett won the 70+ age group with a 1:36:36.

The top two times were turned in by a pair who took 2nd and 3rd place, respectively, in their age groups. CRR Jay Coughenour finished 10th overall and 2nd in the 45-49 age group with a 1:01:18. CRR Bill Rose came in 3rd among the 50-54s in 1:07:43, good for 25th place overall.

An extra shout-out to CRR Ryan German, whose business sponsors this unique race each year, for a very good 1:12:43, placing him 49th overall.

Missed by this much

Marathoning is difficult enough in itself, but when one has a goal in mind, say qualifying for Boston, the exertion over the 26-mile, 385-yard course can seem insignificant to the mental stress of looking at one’s watch and seeing how close one is to qualifying and NOT to have qualified.

photo of Tripp ShentonSuch was the case on October 13 for CRR Tripp Shenton, who, despite running a nice 3:31:30 in the Baltimore Marathon, came up a mere 16 seconds shy (his chip time was 3:30:16) of his age’s 3:30 qualifying standard for the Boston Marathon—less than a second per mile. That’s unfortunate.

Still a strong showing. Know he’ll make it one day.

Two Creek Road Runners ran times at this year’s Delaware Distance Classic 15K that rate as “national class” times for their particular age.

photo of Jay Coughenourphoto of Dan SimmonsCRR Jay Coughenour ran an impressive 55:40 to win the 45-49 age group and finishing 16th overall out of 356 finishers. In addition to this working out to just less than six minutes per mile, this time age grades at 82.0 for his age (80-89 is considered “national class”). CRR Dan Simmons won the 65-69 age group in 1:06:48, which age grades at 80.0 for his age. Well done!

In addition, CRR Bruce Hubbard came in 3rd in the 65-69 age group with a 1:19:56.

Congratulations to Jay, Dan, and Bruce on these quality performances in Delaware’s only 15K.

You’re a real runner if…

acronyms like PR and DNF are verbs.

the thought of signing up for a 401K is scary.

your blood pressure is 92 over 56 and you are conscious.

you drive 100 miles to a 5K race.

you can convert kilometers to miles in your head.

your iPod has a “running” playlist.

you check out road races while on vacation.

you’ve converted your marathon medals into a wind chime.

you consider running 3 miles to be a warm up.

you know the shoe store guy better than some relatives.

you drive down the freeway and think to yourself, “Hey, my car is doing 1-minute miles.”

you know that PR stands for something other than Puerto Rico.

you use your bib numbers to wallpaper your garage.

your resting heart rate is too low to give blood.

you look forward to birthdays when your age changes to a number ending with a 0 or 5.

you consider your latest race shirt “formal wear.”

you mentally measure junk food in miles rather than calories.

you have your own name for all the local public trails.
